I'll guarentee 9/10 people on the Escapist hasn't heard of at least one of these bands.
I love you. Necrophagist are insanely awesome and technically stunning... Dissection were one of my favorite bands growing up, I wore out my cassette os 'Storm of the Lightsbane', what an album.

I can only pick 5?!

Well then I'll have to say:
1. Disturbed
2. Sonata Arctica
3. System Of A Down
4. HIM
5. Coal Chamber
Wow, we have REALLY different taste in metal lol.

Just goes to show what a broad and wonderfully varied genre it is!
What can I say, I'm into Gothic metal bands (not saying all those band I said are gothic)

Is there anyone here into metal (at least 5 bands) who's over 30? Or is it just a teenage rage thing? I found my music tastes really softened with age, and never thought that would happen. I went to NIN a couple of months back and it was good, but really didn't move me the way it used to.
You've got a point its mostly teenage centric but at every concert I've been to there are always a bunch of over 30's...

Nothing wrong with a bit of goth metal!

Type O Negative were a shining example, and I even like a lot of Nightwish stuff, especially 'Once'.

Also the artists your list are all good bands, just not ones I'm that into, though System is great for parties! (and Funeral of Hearts by HIM is a very well written pop song)

Some people seem to have a very loose definition of what metal is.
It's upsetting to see names like Slipknot (outside of the Iowa album) come up. I get it, you think they're great.
But they aren't metal.
Believe it or not, there are more stipulations to being a "metal" band than heavy distortion and harsh vocals (Hence why -core bands are usually not considered metal).

Anyways...

1. Opeth
2. Tool
3. Behemoth
4. My Dying Bride
5. Virgin Black

EDIT:

To the person who said that Tool aren't metal, you're quite mistaken, I assure you.
They're progressive metal, not progressive rock.
Rush are progressive rock.
There are significant differences between Tool and Rush.

Dude, I'm 29 this year and the Metal flows through my veins stronger than ever!

I will never 'grow out of' the music I love because sonically it makes me feel better than any drug you could offer me or any other form of art.

Metal is in some people's blood and they will proudly never stop loving it.

It is also constantly evolving and expanding, it is the only genre that excites me at the moment and I'm a fan of all music, even cheesy pop.

My heart beats in a double kick drum pattern and will do till the day I die.

Dude, Metal is an attitude, not an elitist set of musical rules.

Does it really matter if people call Slipknot metal?

I've been a metal head for 18 years, have over 900 metal albums everything from Bolt Thrower to Priest to At The Gates and if someone asked me to describe Slipknot I would say metal, as it has loud guitars, kick ass drums and it has the metal ATTITUDE.

Also, your number one choice, Opeth, do not consider themselves to be metal.

Varg is officailly out of prison for those who know/care. As for Burzum, great band, wouldn't like to hear anything else from them though hope he just leads a normal life out of the spotlight. Can't beat a bit of Burzum when it comes to black metal. Xasthur is amazing aswell, 'Screaming at Forgotten Fears' is easily my favourite balack metal song of the current generation.

All Time Fav Bands.

1. Death
2. In Flames(old and new, I like all In Flames, YES I DO)
3. Children of Bodom(mostly there older stuff, I have been a fan for a decade)
4. Opeth
5. Dimmu Borgir

Current Favs

1. Gojira(holy shit, best new band I have found in years)
2. Opeth
3. Enslaved
4. Firewind (say them play the other night and met the whole band, amazing)
5. Tyr/Unleashed

I listen to ALOT of very varied metal.

My favorite metal bands are kinda all over the place.
1. Bad Acid Trip
2. Megadeth
3. Carcass
4. Graveworm
5. HORSE the Band

Alice Cooper is good, but I don't know if I'd consider him metal *shrug* to each his own.
