Meshuggah
Soilwork
Dead By April
Killswitch Engage
System of a Down

Pick any order.
I don't care

EDIT: Fun fact.
The guitarrist of Opeth works in a obscure recordstore a couple of blocks away from me.
He looks like a small near-anorexic guy with long blonde hair.

The drummer of Meshuggah used to work at a music instrument store down the street not far from here. You would find him behind the counter being hungover as hell. Occasionally he would go into the drummer-booths and start playing the oddest weirdest beats you would ever hear in your life.

Glad to see there is so much love for Black Sabbath here since they basically started the brutal and scary rock sounds I think.

1) Metallica
2) Iron Maiden
3) Judas Priest
4) Black Sabbath
5) Megadeth

Can't decide who deserves the title for greatest metal band between Metallica and Iron Maiden because both made so many great songs, but since I like Metallica abit more they get my vote.

Also it was difficult to raise Judas Priest above Black Sabbath since Paranoid and Iron Man kick ass but Judas do have a really big variety of good songs so they win by abit.

I'm aware classic rock bands like Led Zeppelin can be considered metal but not to me.

No, Metallica is not that great, only reason everyone knows em for is for the albums made in the 80's, begin of the 90's :/
False, false, absolutely false. haha Metallica is much better than all 5 of the bands you listed.
That having been said:
Metallica
Devil Driver
Mastodon
Korn
Godsmack

In no particular order.
Also, I wouldn't really consider Trent's work as 'metal'. I've always seen it as Industrial/Alternative, kinda. Still great music though.
You add Korn into your list, nuff said

What do you have against Metallica? One and Master of Puppets are considered to be some of the greatest metal songs ever made.

Okey dokey, just let me break out my ipod...

1)Opeth
2) In flames, mainly clayman, and some come clarity
3)Metallica, i don't care what you people say...
4)Trivium, ascendancy (BOAT! RUDDER! CHEESE! BUTTER!)
5)i'll succumb to my metalcore cravings and say all that remains...

also, on a sidenote, it's good to see so many metalheads on the escapist.

Iron Maiden
Led Zeppelin(some would argue that they arnt metal but they were a leader in music becoming heavier)
Black Sabbath(for using the diminished 5th, and creating the metal sound)
System Of A Down
Skindred

Special mention to Judas Preist, Rob Halford is a vocal legend

Way to be a dick. I could do the same by saying that this is a metal thread, so you should leave out a hard rock band like metallica, but I won't.

Can't take a joke? Also what genre all these bands are anyones opinion. Led Zeppelin won an award for greatest metal band but I still say they are hard rock even though I am no expert.

Is there anyone here into metal (at least 5 bands) who's over 30? Or is it just a teenage rage thing? I found my music tastes really softened with age, and never thought that would happen. I went to NIN a couple of months back and it was good, but really didn't move me the way it used to.
Dude, I'm 29 this year and the Metal flows through my veins stronger than ever!

I will never 'grow out of' the music I love because sonically it makes me feel better than any drug you could offer me or any other form of art.

Metal is in some people's blood and they will proudly never stop loving it.
And there is no reason to stop loving it just because you get older. Hell, there are a lot of metal bands out there still producing work and touring that are older than me (30's) like Manowar, Heaven and Hell (DIO,Black Sabbath), Halford/Priest, just to name a few right off the bat.

I will say this tho, having been around loving metal since the 80's, I'm thankful that euro bands picked up the torch and kept true metal alive seeing how in America glam and grunge became puking-ly popular in the early 90's (thankfully for the most part these 2 genres are dead).

And alas, the new century has seen a renaissance of great metal come about.

It is hard to pick just 5 :| no matter what you pick you leave bands out that need to be in it... but here goes...

1. Iron Maiden (arguably the most popular metal band ever amungst metal heads)
2. Motorhead (how could you not, lemmy is god)
3. Judas Preist (shaped the way metal looks)
4. Sodom or Kreator (I cant pick between these 2, thrash metal at its most awesome)
5. Venom (where would black metal be?)
