2.M-16
Accurate Powerful Reliable and Easy to maintain
As has been mentioned, the "Reliable and easy to maintain parts" completely didn't apply to the earlier models, though true it is improved now. Though how do you figure that it's "powerful"? It only fires the 5.56mm bullet, which is only standard for NATO and much weaker than for example the AK-47's 7.62.

Oh please, people. The best civilian rifle you can get is the Ruger Mini-14. Semi-automatic, uses actual assault rifle rounds, durable, and has very little recoil for what it's chambered for. Fully legal everywhere (As far as I know), even in the gunless wastes of California.
I prefer [http://www.impactguns.com/store/sabre_rifles.html] quality [http://www.impactguns.com/store/082442819907.html] when [http://www.impactguns.com/store/BAR-REC7.html] I choose [http://www.impactguns.com/store/KCRBS0803801.html] guns. [http://www.impactguns.com/store/8117280101154.html]

5. M40 AR
3. Automatic Kalashnikov 47 Kalashnikov? lol.

I'm not a real gun buff, but AK47 is an ideal gun from a strategic perspective. Cheap, simple, reliable, and common.

5. STG-44
Advanced for its time, the worlds first Assualt Rifle, but saw very little production because of Hitlers dislike of the look of the gun
Really? I could've sworn he really liked that gun. Huh, guess I do learn something new every day.

OT: M16, AK47, Bushmaster ACR, XM8, and the SCAR-H

If you find $1000 [http://www.impactguns.com/store/arsenal.html] cheap, then yes.

Simplicity comes at an accuracy and staying on target cost.
Reliable in some respects but you still need to be careful with the damn thing.

1000 dollars if your buying it legally, In Saudi Arabia and other countries around the world you can usually get them for a pack of ciggarettes (trade) or incredibly cheap

heheh, only two of the five you listed are actually rifles

OT:

m1a1garand
SKS(just for looks, actually)
mosin-nagaut(sp?)
LP-96(letters?)
NO #5
Their all rifles just not the same type

the Ak M-16 and STG-44 are all assault rifles

The R700 is a Bolt Action Rifle

and the M1 Garand is a Semi Auto Rifle
IMO, the definition of rifle is a semi automatic rifle unless stated as a bolt action or assault, to avoid confusion, that is just how I was taught anyway...

My 2 cents, the M16 and subsequent variant using 5.56mm have a sort of natural tumble effect with their bullets, which causes massive hydrostatic shock, which subsequently leads to greater damage to the tissue. Losing a limb is a lot more common.

The 7.62 will often punch through quite cleanly, because its got more force. The upside is it penetrates body armour far more effectively.

Without body armour someone is often more likely to survive a 7.62, but it's really 6 up and a half a dozen down.

The worst thing to be shot with would be a musket ball, not only were they 17mm they were often poorly forged and fragmented and they would rarely exit a body.

I am confused about the large number of military rifles in this thread, do none of you hunt?
Got to agree it's also mainly focusing on assault rifles. I really want to try out a browning x-bolt, looks like a damn fine hunting rifle.

1. Mosin Nagant anything, indestructable doesn't begin to describe it.
2. AK47, Buy today and you'll get the tool kit absolutely free of charge! A big ass hammer, punch and grinder! The only tools you'll ever need.
3. 10/22. Not joking in the least, best small caliber rifle ever built.

Those are the only three that stay on my list all the time.

Oh, and for shits and giggles, or to amuse anyone who knows about them, the sa80

sa80 is my favourite gun of all time... not even joking, it reaks of awsomeness.

Just LOOK at it! Awsomness!!

...also I rape with it in BF2... That is all.

The best rifle that I, someone that has only fired Shotguns, can walk up too, keep, use, and operate for extended periods of time.

AK-47
SCAR (Both the L and the H, granted the H has a better round.)

Honestly I can't think of many more without there being Cons. You want simply the best of the best?

Barret .50

And if you guys want the M4? Really? Honestly, if your going to go with the M4 platform, at least go with the HK416. Just because it works in your video game. Does not mean it works in real life.
