I'm going straight for the snipers rifles here

1) .50 cal Barrett sniper rifle (nothing says death like a gun that is rumored to cut people in half at under 100 yards)

2) Scout Styger .308 (light weight build in tripod and spare 5 round clip stored in the butt)

3) M26 sniper system

4) Lee-Enfield

5) too man other good ones to pick a 5th

5. STG44 - It was the 1st assault rifle!
Why do people keep saying this? The first assault rifle (that I'm aware of) was the Federov Avtomat which predates the STG44 by almost 25 years. It even saw significant combat, though the Russian brass didn't really know what they had.

Linky: http://world.guns.ru/assault/as86-e.htm
The first gun to be called an Assault rifle then.

Im bored so i thought id start this thread

whats your opinion on the top 5 rifles ever designed?

mine:

1.AK-47
Cheap to make, accurate reliable easy to use clean and has been around for forever

2.M-16
Accurate Powerful Reliable and Easy to maintain

3. M1 Garand
Probably the best semi auto rifle of WW2, Accurate, Powerful round but had a decent amountof recoil

4. Remington 700
A million variants of this gun that can do just about anything, from civilian hunting rifle to Military sniper rifle its accuracy makes it a great rifle

5. STG-44

It seems that you have retained all your knowledge of firearms by playing call of duty. Seriously? The M16? That thing is like jam central.
Advanced for its time, the worlds first Assualt Rifle, but saw very little production because of Hitlers dislike of the look of the gun

What is with all you gamers naming all these weaksauce H&K weapons?

5 best rifles

Mosin-Nagant 91/30
Mauser K98 (most other bolt-actions are influenced by it's design)
AK-47 and 74
M-16 and variants
FN FAL

Unlike alot of you, I have fired numerous weapons in the course of my military duties. Take that!!

I'm not a real gun buff, but AK47 is an ideal gun from a strategic perspective. Cheap,
If you find $1000 [http://www.impactguns.com/store/arsenal.html] cheap, then yes.
Seriously? Then that store sucks.

An AK47 costs about 50 bucks to make.

EDIT: And I would agree in that the AK47 is one of the best guns out there. Alongside the FAMAS, but only because it's my Counter Strike buddy.

I only agree with the first part. The toolmakers at what I believe is Khyber pass(I don't really remember where) can make you any weapon for Kalashnikov price, but the quality of the weapon and the materials used are questionable at best.

The FAMAS? Hahahaha another weaksauce weapon. For CQC maybe but inferior for anything farther than that.

That's why I said it's my Counter Strike buddy. I love that weapon in game, but I've never seen someone use it in real life before.

MP5 is another overengineered design from Heckler and Krotch whose makers think that it is worth it's weight on gold.
It has been used by alot of teams who immediately replaced it with Colt M4 Carbines.

The Remington 700 saw service in the military as the M40 for the USMC and the US Army as the M24 for quite some time. The Barrett M107 is hard to beat for long distance shooting. An awesome design from Ronnie Barrett that uses the same cartridge that was developed by Saint John Moses Browning. :)

I am confused about the large number of military rifles in this thread, do none of you hunt?
The only rifle I've fired is the F88 Austeyr. So it'd probably be the only one on my list. Which yeah, makes me look like a military fanboy quoting stuff I read on the internet; but when I used it I found it to be very comfortable, extremely lightweight (especially compared with the Vietnam-era SLRs that I handled but never fired), very low on recoil and easy enough to use that first time shooting it (or anything for that matter) I got 20 rounds within 130mm grouping.

Of course, I have no personal experience firing other rifles, so for all I know they could all be this good.

I've known some French Army people who hate the FAMAS. Too short of a sight radius and cycling problems and malfunctions.

The G-11; A weapon that is just a developmental design that will never be used. I thought this was about rifles that have a superior design, not weapons that look cool. Caseless ammo that doesn't fire when moisture makes contact with it? No thanks!

And "reliable" is nothing to what a Ak47 can take. I've seen them dunked in water, sand, mud, beat with a hammer, then still fire off a clip.
I saw one that was filled with sand. Then thrown in water. Then driven over. And it still fired off a clip.

No shit. When I was in Iraq, some infantry guys had pulled out a bunch of AK's that had been buried under a bunch of dirt for over 20 years. All they did was hose them down, spray some WD-40 on them and fired a magazine (not a "clip) through them. Out of 200 AK's that had been pulled from the dirt, only 3 of them would not fire.

1: The L85A2, the best NATO rifle around, and the best assault rifle today. Extremely accurate, compact without sacrificing barrel length, extremely reliable. And gotta love the SUSAT sight too.

2: The Velmet RK95, fuck your shitty Ak47. This is where it's at, the same durability, reliability of an AK with the accuracy and precision of a NATO rifle.

3: The FN FAL. Really? Need I explain?

4: Automat Karbin 5, the AK5. An FN FNC variant made for the Swedish Army. Basically an FN FNC made even more reliable and durable, and fixed it up ergonomically so you can comfortably use it with winter gloves. It's accurate and reliable, although it's a little heavy.

5: The M16A4, I don't like it much, but still, it's a pretty damn good rifle. Accurate, reliable (keep it clean, people who don't clean their rifles = morons) and light weight.

Why isn't the AK47 here? Because it's a piece of shit. Sure, it's a piece of shit that works no matter what you do to it, but you can't hit the side of a barn with that thing. Sure it's very symbolic and it's used in all resistance movements/guerrilla fighters, but you know why? Because the gun is so simple a child can figure out how it works.

The Assault Kalashnikov is the best for many reason.Mainly because it has a cool name.
