I dont know much about rifles but I heard the Browning A-bolt series and the Remington 700 were pretty good, and of course all the old classic Winchester rifles like the Model 1894 probably deserve a mention.

As far as military stuff goes, the Lee-Enfield rifles were used by Commonwealth in WW1 and WW2, so they must be alright, as was the Mauser K98. Not sure about modern ARs though...

Not very good now, granted, but back then, it was one of the best.

No it's still pretty good, there are modern versions that have all the old benefit (like being clip feed) and modern improvements to accuracy and reliability. I intend to own one when I actually earn money. It fires fast (if your good with the bolt) and reloads quicklys (via the clips) and its very reliable (more so than the AK47).

It's what I am carrying for the zombie apocalypse, with a bandolier and bayonet. That or a pump action rifle with a reflex site, they've got some beauties that reload with AR15 style mags. As you might notice I'm an Aussie, no semi-autos or autos.

I think the Lee-Enfield is a good rifle. It was used for about 50 years, and is very reliable.

And "reliable" is nothing to what a Ak47 can take. I've seen them dunked in water, sand, mud, beat with a hammer, then still fire off a clip.

The one a friend owns was taken from a jungle in Vietnam. He brings it out once a year, uses a hammer to bash the breach open, then inserts a mag, shoots it, then tosses it back into the garage for another year.

Topics like this are why I hate the internet. 90%+ of the people on this thread are talking right out of their rectal passages, and it always gets this way when firearms are discussed. Shame on most of you - stop relying on "knowledge" acquired from computer games. Not even the Operation Flashpoint/ARMA series portrays everything that you need to know, and if you're basing your choices on Call of Duty or its kin, you've just embarrassed yourselves beyond the point of return.

Not being a hypocrite on matters like this, I will freely acknowledge that I don't have the data or experience to make an informed choice regarding these weapons. I don't want to claim expertise acquired from a few dozen hours of Operation Flashpoint.

Can't you have 5 favourite rifles even if your reasoning isn't supported by an in depth education from years of practical and theoretical experiance with fire arms? Maybe you just have 5 your particuarly fond of for one reason or another, I'd think most people in here who have played recent war games would probably have a few they'd like to discuss. People who profess expertise without warrant and pretend to be professionals are arses, but so are dramatic presumptuous buggers.

5. The Famas bullpup assault rifle. Limited magazine but very accurate, looks cool and rarely jams. Bullpups are the way to go!

4. SA80, aka the small arms for the 1980's. This gun is the work force of the british army. Uses 5.56mm rounds and is bullpup It looks kind of dumb due to the odd colour scheme but damn its a good weapon!

3. FN F2000, another bullpup rifle! And no I am not biased but due to their looks and loading systems they're easier to use and jam less. The FN F2000 looks odd as hell, its insanely sci fi looking but damn is it cool. It uses 5.56mm rounds. Some models have built in heat vision sights. Its kind of like Sam Fishers rifle.

2. M1Garand, we pretty much all know about this badass world war 2 weapon. It helped win the war most definately and looked cool too. It was an accurate single shot rifle that packed a 30 calibur punch! The only problem was that after shooting all 8 rounds the clip would dispell and make a loud TING sound, practically telling enemies you were reloading. Great gun overall.

1. The ak-47.......no not really! I'd be a generic **** putting that on here, its a good gun but I wanna be a bit different. So I say the G36C! What can I say, its an amazing weapon. Ever since I played COD4 and murdered hundreds with this gun I have been fascinated by it. Powerful, reliable and just plain cool looking. Its the best things those crazy germans ever produced. It has many variants and apparently a bullpup version is being made to improve the accuracy and reload mechanics. So making a near perfect gun, perfect.
Its fucking cool as hell.

It wasn't that hitler didn't "like" the weapon but rather didn't want to replace his favourite weapon the Karabiner 98 kurz(kar98k) but gave in and renamed it to the stg44 instead of its previous name mp44.

The Winchester 1887 is a shotgun. You might be thinking of the other Winchester lever actions, like the '94

First you people need to get some standard definition of what would equate to the bestust rifflez evarz.

I propose:
1) Most Reliability (How often it breaks. Materials used. Will this thing rust on me?)
2) Highest Accuracy
3) Longest Effective Range
4) Greatest Stopping Power (Amount of kinetic force transfered to target)
5) Ease of Use (Recoil, Repair, Trigger safety and other functions, guns do more than shoot.)
6) Features (case ejector position, closed/open bolt, etc.)
7) Ergonomics (Feel, adjustable stock, grip, etc.)
8) Available Accessories (Bipods, Grenade Launchers)
9) Anything else that isn't "This gun was used by country X in war Y because company Z got the lowest bid and is real popular." N'Sync was popular, Spice Girls were popular, they both suck. I dont care where it came from or who used it, only how it performs.

You missed a big one: Availability, which comes down to price and ease of production. Most rifles are built for war, and in war logistics is a massive factor. The ability to pump out lots of adequate stuff cheaply is often far better than making a small amount of very good stuff expensively.

To put it another way, a $2,000 dollar rifle is no use to anyone with only $1,000; a rifle that takes a week to make is inadequate when you need to make one every day.

7.62x39 Soviet still has lethal energy after going through a brick wall at an angle while 5.56x45 NATO won't even penetrate without multiple rounds even shooting straight on. When most targets are going to be hiding behind something as well as possibly wearing body armor, this is a very important consideration.

Cheap, made in the Soviet Union (mostly Georgia), wide variety of models, M44 had built-in bayonet.

2.) AK-47
Once more, cheap, excellent design philosophy, amazing ability to not jam under stress, fires accurately for what it is, and is amazingly cool looking to boot.

3.) Colt 1911A1 (Not a rifle, but it gets a special mention)
Let's face it - this is the classic .45 and will remain so well after I die. It's just too kickass, too simplistic, and too dependable to die within the next 50 years.

4.) Saiga-12
Ridiculously cooler than the USAS-12, this AK-based 12-gauge is the ultimate in firepower and delivery. Especially for the price (once again, cheap). The Saiga 12 also has a wide variety of synthetic bodies you can switch out for, making it totally awesome.

5.) Remington M870
After taking this beauty to the trap range one too many times, I fell in love with it. It's just too damn accurate on its full-choke, wooden stock/foregrip sexiness. 25/25 targets. No other shotgun has pulled this off, even the Berettta semi-automatic I was using last month in skeet.
