Hate to inform you, but as awesome as she is, Samus isn't a Silent Protagonist. She narrates the into to Super Metroid, she speaks/narrates in Metroid Fusion, and she narrates in Metroid: Zero Mission.

Maybe for you, but the millenium shift was a golden age for platformers and pop punk that I'll never forget.

Additionally: In my opinion, mentioning FPS protaganist are kind cheating. Seeing FPSs are generally presented so, to make it easier for one to relate to the character you're controlling. Of course there are exceptions

Freemand hands down. The man's presence is so immense that you can hear his voice, even though he never talks.

This (although obviously it's Freeman).

I kind of dismiss Link/Doom Guy/Bioshock Jack because in hearing their grunts etc. I kind of get an impression of what their voice might sound like. Only Freeman is truly silent (of games I have played).

I have to go with Link, Samus, and Jack from Bioshock. I wouldn't really count Mario cuz he actually does talk. Granted, he doesn't talk a lot, but it's enough to disqualify him from my list.
