This was a tough one but here it is. It's certainly not as good as other people's list, though.
1) Say It Ain't So-Weezer
Weezer's best. It's nice and mellow, good guitar riffs and a sweet solo.

2)Cure For The Itch-Linkin Park
Oh, don't give that "it's Linkin Park" look, this song is different. I just like the strings at 0:53 mixed with the beat. Proof that Joe Hahn, the Dj of Linkin Park, deserves more recognition than the entire band itself. [/ JK... sorta]

3)My Name Is Jonas-Weezer
The guitar riff is great and it's fun to head bang to... for me at least.

4)Only In Dreams-Weezer
This song isn't mentioned as much as it should be. It has a nice baseline and an awesome build up in the middle. Kinda long, though.

5)Flower-Moby
Yes, it might be a bit repetitive but hey, it's pretty catchy.

6)Handlebars-Flobots
I found this song to be kinda scary but it's still really cool.

7)Kids-MGMT
This is actually kind of a guilty pleasure. Whenever I play this my friends always give me a "look". I'm not sure why. They showed it to me.

8)In This World-Moby
Again, a bit repetitive but dammit, listen to her voice! It's fucking beautiful.

9)Alice-Moby
Yeah, I know it's a rap. But it's a rap about Alice and Wonderland so that will get you to forgive me, right? Right???

10)Find My Baby-Moby
Another example on how Moby is repetitive yet still awesome.
There. I'm done talking like a little know it all about my music. Like I said, you can't compare it to other people's list, but hey, I like what I like.

This seems fun. Here we go in no particular order.

Spaceman - The Killers
Just an insanely fun song that gets you in an upbeat mood.

Become The Catalyst - All That Remains
It's one of their best songs, and a great metal song to get you going.

Outer Space - Ronald Jenkees
A great semi-unknown artist who makes me feel right at home in space with this.

Reckless Abandon - Blink 182
Another fun song that's fast paced and shows to joys of learning to party.

Schism - Tool
An amazing song with such a great bass line that I forget I'm listening and not feeling the music.

Tribute - Tenacious D
Is there anything else to say?! It was the best song in the world!

The Takedown - Yellowcard
A great song that's fun to sing along to, while still having some great instrument power.

Danger: Wildman - The Devil Wears Prada
A heavier song on the list, it gets you pumped and ready to brawl, but still sounds beautiful.

Gone Away - The Offspring
A wonderful song that shows the lighter side of punk by an wonderfully talented band.

Aerith's Theme - Nobuo Uematsu
I can't say anything negative about this song. It still brings a tear to my eye every now and then, truly a work of genius.

Well... There we go.

Dstryr/Dstryr - Lostprophets
Survive - Rise Against
Hero of War - Rise Against
Give It All - Rise Against
Collapse (Post-Amerika) - Rise Against
House of Wolves - My Chemical Romance
Last Train Home - Lostprophets
Livin' On A Prayer - Bon Jovi
iViva La Gloria! - Green Day
Horseshoes And Handgrenades - Green Day

For the lack of System of A Down in this list: They do many good songs but...none of them stand out as classics, I'd say...victims of their own success somewhat.
If I had to include just one, I'd go for Shimmy. Or BYOB. Or perhaps X...or Forest.
Shimmy is just pure epic. I want a Shimmy shimmy shimmy trough the break of dawn YEAAH!

Or something like that....

While My Guitar Gently Weeps - The Beatles

Amazing song. George's lyrics are incredible, and the guitar solos are amazing.

Brothers in Arms - Dire Straits

The guitar part just blows me away.

Fields of Gold - Sting

Very relaxing, very enjoyable.

Time - Tom Waits

I've always loved Tom Waits. This is probably my favorite of his.

Downtown Train - Tom Waits

A little more up beat side of Waits. I like it.

Ruby's Arms - Tom Waits

I just can't get enough of this guy!

Imagine - John Lennon

I think we all know why. Peace + love to everyone.

Watching the Wheels - John Lennon

Just a great song. The lyrics really identify with me.

Play With Fire - the Rolling Stones

One of their more mellow songs. I like that side of them.

In My Life - the Beatles

Great song. Most likely what will be played at my wedding/funeral.
lol i knew it was you when i saw the first song :p Beatles freak.

I'll be quick.

6 songs from Metallica: Nothing else matters, seek and destroy (opening of this song is epic), Cyanide, For whom The Bell Tolls, One, Fuel (gets me pumped up).

Foreplay-Boston: heard them on the radio recently and i suddenly remembered them and the music is just amazing.

Wish you were here-Pink Floyd: The title of this song means a lot to me personally

Still Alive-Portal/Galdios: it brings out my inner nerd.

Saltons of Swing-Dire Straits: idk why but the guitar play to me is unbelievable.

Right, I'm going to try this. In no particular order though, that would be too hard.

1) A Wilhelm Scream - We Built This City On Debts And Booze
First off, a hardcore punk song with a name that is a pun on a song we all know. This song does the brilliant job of describing exactly what's wrong with modern society in one sentence ("Awake, arise, eat work shit sleep, awake arise") while at the same time staying positive by promoting unity and keeping an upright posture.

2) Ayreon - Day 19: Disclosure
This one belongs in the 'prog metal' section. Ayreon is a man who brings together artists and singers from different bands, countries and places, and lets them play their own part in a larger story he creates. All through music. This specific song is one of the last of the "The Human Equation" album, and resembles a man slowly waking up from his coma and conversing with his best friend and wife while doing so. The reason I like this song most of the entire album is solely and entirely Marcella Bovio's lines in it ("My sweet love, my heart belongs to you... But I was lonely and the need for passion grew") - they really bring chills to my spine, something that only one out of thousands of songs/singers manage to do. That said, without further ado, I give you

3) Bad Religion - All There Is
Without a doubt Bad Religions best song. It virtually summarizes the content of all their other songs in the one brilliant line of "Can that be all there is?".

4) Enter Shikari - Gap In The Fence
And another brilliant summary of what's wrong with society and how we subconsiously avoid every bit of it whenever possible. Along with an uplifting theme of pure hope and the question "What could we be if we worked with eachother instead of against eachother?". I also love the fact that it is in fact a ballad but breaks the traditional structure of one. It is a ballad, but in Enter Shikari's way.

5) Fort Minor - Cigarettes
Coming from a rapper, I have major respect for the way Shinoda and his crew lay down the complete and utter truth about rap. "And everything they say has got the truth twisted up, but twisted up's what I want man I can't get enough! 'Cause even though we know it's all just a big bluff we just light another up - what, we don't give a fuck!"

6) Red Hot Chili Peppers - Wet Sand
The reason I'm putting this here is completely instrumental. Hence why it might be one of my more doubtful attributions to the thread - I'm not sure whether this can be considered one of the 'greatest 10 songs ever' but that doesn't change the fact that the solo at the end literally gets to my heart. This song is my ULTIMATE relaxation song.

7) Streetlight Manifesto - Here's to Life
If you'd ask me what my theme song is, it's this. The song is about how all the singers' idols comitted suicide because their life sucked - and all of that is our fault. Yet, he draws the line at suicide and decidates his song; here's to life! The line "And I don't know much but I do know this; with a golden heart comes a rebel fist" is pretty much my personal motto.

8) The Flatliners - Do or Die
Another one that's a bit personal - possibly not the Flatliners' best song but I had to pick one out of three. This song describes the feeling of sleeplesness depression caused by having lost faith in society. I couldn't put it any other way than that and the song just does a damn good job at expressing exactly the numbing painful feeling of depressed sleepiness.

9) The Lonely Island - I'm On A Boat
This song needs no explanation as you all know it. The reason it's in here though, is because parody is a genre as well. In fact, it is a genre that is pretty damn hard to get right. The Lonely Island nail it though, completely. The fact that they've got a real rapper to co-operate and do it on a friendly manner only adds to their score.

And there is no tenth song. I've now arrived at the point where I picked the best songs from the very best artists I know. Nothing else I've got (from different artists) gets close enough to be posted in the same list, so I might as well stick to 9.

(great list)
Massive kudos for putting The New Pornographers at the top. In a move that'll come as no surprise to anyone who knows me, I'm gonna do the same:

My favourite and most played song of all time... any questions?

...after that, the order gets a bit sketchy and very much subject to change, but this'd be a fair list (in order of plays on last.fm, for the sake of convenience):

InMe - 'Trenches'
Sublime - 'Santeria'
Dinosaur Jr. - 'Freak Scene'
Every Time I Die - 'The New Black'
M.I.A. - 'Paper Planes'
Roy Orbison - 'In Dreams'
Neutral Milk Hotel - 'In The Aeroplane Over The Sea'
The Fratellis - 'Creepin' Up The Backstairs'
Brand New - 'The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows'
The Beatles - 'I Want You (She's So Heavy)'

...like I say, very much subject to change. Also I left out another New Pornographers song that would've otherwise been there, since they've already got the #1 spot firmly taken. There's a last.fm box and link in my profile if anyone cares enough to check it out.

How the hell can you people do this?

It's completely impossible for me.
I sympathize.

It's like how oneself one day can crave Shrimp, and the next have a big need of some ice cream. The pursuit and desire of a healthy musical interest ebbs and flows from genre to genre and varies its timbre as resounding and wide as any bombastic orchestra.
