I've always thought woman should be allowed to show their breasts in public for the simple reason that it's often required for breast feeding so I don't see why it was considered a problem in the first place, but then from what I can tell America as a society seems to have a problem with seeing breast feeding in public which is a shame really.

I'm pretty sure that women being topless in public has been legal in New York since 93 when there was a ruling that since laws can't discriminate, and men can be topless in public it's okay.

I really can't believe al the negative comments about this law, its as if the US are afraid of the human body, and death and chaos will ensue if boobs are shown.

Come to Europe and chill out, nudity everywhere and no one cares, because nudity is not demonised and seen as obscene, a body is a body, so what? Even in the UK I have seen parades and gatherings with topless women all over the place, and the brits have an image of being prude. What does that tell you about the US?

The funny part is that the VAST majority of the United States ALREADY allows women to be topless. Many people, especially women, I've found, just assume that being topless is illegal in most states, when the complete opposite is true. I think that many of the comments reflect this mindset.

These types of misunderstandings of things that are very easily searchable are the cause of many, many problems, both because many cops don't even know the laws of their own jurisdiction (for example: the Age of Consent is 16 in 30 US states, not 18 like Hollywood portrays as a result of California's 18 AoC, causing plenty of arrests of guys that weren't even breaking the law to begin with), and because it warps the public perception of police abuses when police DO attack someone peacefully exercising their freedom. Let alone gun carry laws, which are an entirely different hassle for officers that don't understand the legal right to carry openly in many states.

OT: As far as toplessness goes, like carrying a firearm openly, while it is absolutely a fundamental freedom, or at least completely legal in many/most areas, don't expect officers that may or may not give a shit about civil liberty to begin with to give you an easy time. Here's the states where being topless is legal, as of 2012:

Honestly, to say this is a win for "gender equality" spits in the face of actual issues that both sides suffer and is incredibly insulting. Someone's inability to be bare chested is so laughably insignificant compared to earning gap, child custody, employment, and other issues that have ACTUAL negative impacts on people's lives.
