The game looks awesome. Any one know the amount of players that can play online? I think I read somewhere that its 24. 12vs12.
Console is 24 player, PC is 64.
Now that I've gotten that out of the way,
HOLY SHIT THIS GAME LOOKS GOOD. This is a pre-alpha build which already looks better than a lot of finished games, and it's only going to get better. In addition, I'm a sucker for the Battlefield franchise, and so I'm bound to be getting progressively giddier as the launch date nears. On top of all of that, I've been quietly geeking out over Frostbite 2 for a little while (and for good reason, I believe--that lighting was pretty damn awesome). Obviously it's too early to give a conclusive statement on the quality of the finished product, but this trailer is enough to make me
extremely excited for Battlefield 3.
I'll stop gushing now.

Regardless, whether someone is copying the other is irrelevant. I remember back when a maximum of 1-2 "gritty modern war" games came out every year. Now they're all over the fucking place and it ticks me off that such a great looking game engine is going to waste on another boring war shooter.
Very true, but remember when the market was straining under the weight of all the World War 2 games? These things come and go in phases: somebody makes a game, it works, people make similar games, and on and on. Soon modern war games will be run into the ground and something else will come to take its place. Until then, I suppose, it's just a storm you'll have to weather.
As for the engine being 'wasted', I'd just like to humbly point out that it's not going anywhere: Frostbite tech will still be around for DICE's next project, whatever that may be (maybe that Mirror's Edge sequel that may or may not have been cancelled?). Even if you're disappointed with this particular game, just remember that it gives them more development time for the engine to be even better for whatever comes next.
