That's fair enough, the format can be give or take and it's not the best place to have a conversation I agree. It's more just for spreading stuff around. If it's not your cup of tea, that's a perfectly fine reason. When I mentioned people making fun of Tumblr, they're usually not complaining about the interface.

So I was on tumblr today.

Op, tumblr is a blogging system.
Perhaps if you have artists you want to keep tabs on I don't see the point.
By and large human lives are uninteresting and the people whose lives are interesting certainly don't blog about it.
Just do yourself a favor, stay away from the land of angelicdaemonkin, demisexual, panboy, bi-gay-grey-A-pansexual-pan romantic, zi, zim, gir, special snowflakes.
Seriously I'd take /b/tards over that shit anyway.

You do know you can choose who to follow on Tumblr, right? Just follow things and people you like, and fine people who post stuff you like and follow them, too.
And when you see someone post something you think is stupid, unfollow them
Huh.
That is literally designed to create an echo chamber.
Not to argue anyone would want to view people they didn't like, just by definite nature the system is more or less designed

It's no more full of self righteous assholes than the rest of the internet is. Just avoid the dicks if you want to stay on it. But then again around these parts Tumblr seems to be the current acceptable punching bag, the website that it's ok to sterotype. Can't sterotype 4chan but sterotyping tumblr is a-ok.
People stereotype 4chan all over the internet, especially here.
Maybe it's the recent GG mess but I've actually seen people get angry on this website for sterotyping 4chan. Plus nowadays I rarely see people do it, at least here.
Unless we had a storm of angry anons yelling about people calling moot a cuck I don't see this happening
GG took place on 8CHAN after it was removed from 4CHAN
AND PEOPLE SLANDERED, not stereotyped 8CHAN
Saying that 4chan is the asshole of the internet is widely accepted as a Stereotype.
Claiming that 8chan is full of pedos, is unsubstantiated and slander.
And the only one that tried to prove 8chan, which by the way is not represented solely by gg got into legal trouble a while ago, Dan Olsen wasn't it.

I thought it was established 20mins after it went live that tumblr was trash? Like not even an open-secret, its just fact.
People go to tumblr for two reasons:
1. Look are artsy pictures of hot topless women doing topless women things in an artsy way.
2. Watch SJWs have a complete meltdown over how you can't be kind and good-willed and white at the same time.

People don't accidentally stumble into "echo chambers". They either self-select into them through preference of hearing opinions they enjoy/agree with, or they functionally create one in their head via confirmation bias.

Frankly it is often the people screaming the loudest about circle-jerks and echo chambers that are neck deep in one themselves. This is what the average shit-fit about "echo chambers" ends up sounding like...

Only reason I've ever been to tumblr is when a friend links me to social justice nonsense for a reaction. And he stopped doing that when I stopped reacting.

Tumblr consists of these things.

1. Funny gifs.
2. Misguided social justice.
3. Porn.
4. My excellent blog that you all ought to follow.
If your blog only posts funny misguided social justice porn gifs, I'd follow the hell out of that
I saw gifs of that Emma Sulkowicz sex tape earlier that can only be described as a funny misguided social justice porn gif. Unfortunately, that was on a chan and not on tumblr. As usual the chans are doing what other sites do only better.

I understand that, my point is that is it designed to facilitate that sort of system, I might just have explained it poorly.
I really haven't met people screaming about circle jerks all that much, but that isn't all their fault if they do.
It's just a part of who they are.

Really? Just those two reason? I better delete my Tumblr account then, I'm not using it correctly. I'll also have to tell at least a hundred other blogs I follow that they have to delete their accounts as well.

Do you know how many blogs there are on Tumblr? According to this site [http://www.statista.com/statistics/256235/total-cumulative-number-of-tumblr-blogs/], it's 227 million blogs. I'll be generous and say that on average, a Tumblr user has two blogs (many have one, many have more than two, let's take two as average). That gives us over a hundred million individual users. You put a third of the population of the USA into two categories.

Now, are there users who fit your categories? Yes. Tumblr is a site on the internet, populated by more than a hundred million people. Are there more categories, just as there are more categories on the entire internet? Yes. It does you a disservice when you or anyone writes something like this because it's absolutely illogical and unreasonable. You don't have to like Tumblr at all, but framing it as some sort of a boogeyman and here-be-monsters land is silly. It's especially silly when we take into consideration the fact that Tumblr for you is what you want it to be.

It's basically like going online, encountering The Flat Earth Society [http://www.theflatearthsociety.org/cms/] and concluding that the internet is only populated by people who believe the Earth is flat. So yeah, there's stupid shit on the internet, including Tumblr and every other online space. Fortunately, on Tumblr you can completely avoid everything that you believe is stupid.

Well, it was a mix of glorifying it and fetishizing it. Some guy made a thread talking about how there was this girl he wanted to date solely 'cause she suffered from Schizophrenia, and spent the entire thread defending this decision because of how 'fascinating' dating someone with schizophrenia would be. Given I happen to have that particular brand of mental illness, it didn't sit well with me and I figured 'fuck it, I'll take the warning'.

Glorifying mental illness is a pretty disturbing trend I've seen around the net though - shit like 'I wish I was x', 'I'm jealous my friend has x and gets to do all of this stuff' or 'I wanna date someone with X solely because they have X' has crossed my path far more than I'd really like. It's usually relegated to the back-ends of the net or places with larger numbers of young users (i.e. Chans, Reddit, Tumblr) due to ignorance on mental health, but it does crop up in forums such as here every now and then.
Yikes! Okay. That's a new one for me. I get what you're talking about now.

Usually the problem with mental illness is the opposite (stigmatization). I guess it stands to reason some people, either from being overly well meaning or overly weird, would go the opposite direction with it. Reminds me of those "bug chasers" who went out to deliberately get AIDS because it was "romantic".

That's a new one. How does one "glorify" a mental illness, exactly?

Oh, was that the person that said they'd be massively hurt and betrayed or somesuch if she took medication for it?

Don't forget people asking how to get their tumblr to work.
Will Rogers once said "Nothing you can't spell will ever work". Between Tumblr, Flickr, and Google, I'm surprised anyone knows how to do anything on the internet.

That was you? God, I remember that. Saying he was glorifying mental illness doesn't even begin to capture the sleaziness of that whole op.

He wanted to manipulate her and prevent her from getting help for her condition because it would make her less sexy. *shudders*

You want a website to talk with people of similar hobbies?

Step 1: Make a Reddit account.
Step 2: Delete all the automatically added subreddits.
Step 3: Add subreddits relevant to your hobbies.

If you want actual news don't use reddit. There is a site called Voat for that. It uses the same layout as reddit but was made out of protest of the moderation/oversaturation on reddit that has made it gossip>news.

Tumblr is, in fact, terrible. Not for porn, for porn it is great, but it isn't an especially good community. It is basically like 4chan, there is some good shit sometimes, but also an amazing amount of annoying/terrible stuff. I mean, yeah, you can filter it out to some degree by who you follow, just like you can only visit certain areas of 4chan... But it is still there, and you will encounter it eventually...
