1. Who gives a shit about what was most popular online game for the Xbox? CS:S came out 5, 6 years ago and is much more played than Halo. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that 1.6 still beats Halo for traffic.
2. You're right that Mario is a diversified title while Halo is all same-genre sequels but that doesn't make the Mario games not a series. You were talking about 'title' and so I presumed that's what you meant. You also failed to recognise that Wii Fit outsold each individual Halo game by a massive margin and wasn't that far off the entire back catalogue.
3. Your whole post smacks of an Xbox fanboy/exclusive gamer, and while that is fine for you, you should consider your relative inexperience before posting your opinions, and take it into account.
4. The only thing that is impressive about the Halo series is how much it took in an uneducated mass of console gamers.
1. You seem to think that 'gamer' only refers to PC gamers, which I think is dead wrong. For a lot of people, their home PCs aren't even close to capable of handling many games that many would consider "essential". I recognize that CS:S is an awesome game and probably does get more traffic than Halo, I know because I played the Counter-Strike series for years, ever since the release of 1.6...
2. The Mario deal was, I believe, simple confusion between the two of us, so fair. I agree that it cleanly outstrips any other single title, partly because of its massive number of games and mostly because, well, it's Mario... As for Wii Fit, I have no problem recognizing that it outsold each Halo game... I just don't see the point in your argument.
3. WRONG I really don't know what else to say about that... I didn't even have an original Xbox, and just got a 360 in November of last year. Not exactly the fanboy description. Also, I've been PC gaming for a lot longer than I've been console gaming, switching only because none of my friends are on the PC anymore. I beat Half Life, Half Life 2, 2: Episode 1 and 2: Episode 2 along with Portal, all on the PC. I also used to average upwards of 15 hours a week playing CS:S back before I had high school sports every day after school... Yeah...
4. True. Very true. But because of how well it took to these mindless gamers, it has become very well known, even if it is infamously.
Also, to be fair, I think that this whole thread/discussion is very arbitrary because even if a game is famous, there's a good chance many 'gamers' haven't played it. For example, I bloody hate RTS's, so if there's a quote from one of them, I'd be clueless.

Not everyone is going to know what you mean by Spartan, and they may just think of the actual ancient Greek spartans instead. Besides, if you mention Halo, people will more likely identify that with "Master Chief." They don't always know that he's called a spartan, because not everyone gives a shit about the story.

Aren't they the guys from 300?
I suppose I should also clarify that I assumed we were talking about games... I mean, there are a couple of quotes that have been listed that if just shouted in conversation wouldn't apply directly to a game. And there are those which you'd know immediately.

Anyone who just plays FPSes and Grand Theft Auto, has never played any other time of game or really owned a console before the XBox, and dismisses everything else + acts all superior AND boasts about being a 'true gamer'. Fair enough if you've played so many other times of games, but seriously, if you've only ever played Halo, you are not a 'better gamer' than somebody just because they own a Wii.

There just seem to be so many people today (teenagers, mainly) who act all 'awesome nerdy gamer' because nerdy gaming is 'cool' apparently (what I mean is... so many people boast about how awesomely nerdy they are with their gaming because they think it's so awesome and unique, and they're the best gamer ever), despite only playing the big new popular releases. Usually scoff when you mention Zelda, because it's just a 'dumb kid's game'.

Too many sarcastic quote marks.
Also not a blanket stereotype. I'm not saying that this is EVERYYONE who likes Call of Duty, or the PS3/XBOX, but a certain sort of person who thinks that FPSes are the best and only game, and everything else is lame and kiddy.

I actually revoked a few people's Gamer licenses for having not played NetHack.
They did what they needed, though, and got 'em back.

You don't need to know what it is to be a gamer, per se, but considering the title, I put it here because of my past experience.
Still, one really should know NetHack if one is going to be more scholarly about their gaming.
Wasn't that game terrible?
I'm gonna have to revoke your license for that.

They need to learn the terns:

FPS or RPG for example...
Yeah - at least know the genres

A hell of a lot of people wouldn't know what RTS referred to, even if they knew FPS or RPG
This I can get behind, but there are so many classes and categories of "gamer" out there that it's entirely possible for two self-proclaimed "hardcore" gamers to know each other for years and have completely mutually exclusive lists of games they'd played.
This is true, but surely a gamer will have tried various games of various genres, maybe when they started out and didn't know what kind of games they liked yet. And would probably have come into contact with such phrases on gaming forums and the like
Which only brings up a further question---is it necessary for gamers to participate in online gaming forums, or can someone adopt the opinion of "they're all cesspools" (which, considering most game forums, is a valid opinion to adopt) and simply go through life playing games without really learning much about them beyond the "official" gaming press, Metacritic, and Steam?
Ehh I don't think it's necessary to go on a forum to be a gamer. Many do but I wouldn't say it had to be done.

Off Topic but reminded because of 1vs100 mention; The name of Link's fairy isn't common knowledge, unless its name really is "Irratato"

They should know how to use the controller, or at least the buttons.

Fair play on all points except saying that I assume gaming is limited to PC gaming. I just meant that as far as popularity or traffic goes, Halo is by no means the top dog. I definitely jumped down your throat unnecessarily, assuming fanboyism. It's mostly because Halo can FUCK RIGHT OFF, so I'm sorry.
Haha fair enough. I do agree that Halo isn't as ideal as many people believe, but I do think that it offers a fun online experience, especially if you've got a couple of friends in there with you. I agree that it isn't the top dog, especially because you can't always judge a game's popularity by it's use on Live, or any internet connection for that matter, be it PSN or just an internet connection via PC. I was just attempting to validate my point that most 'gamers' will know what "Spartan" means. I appreciate the recall of the fanboy comment too. Good day to you sir.
