They need to know what a team fortress 2 is?

Do you know yourself, 'cos it's just team fortress 2.

OP: they need to know what the benefits are of pcs vs. consoles.
My mistake, sometimes my Backspace key jams and it doesn't delete. That's why the "a" was still there. :p
Fair enough, I only pointed it out because this thread is basically how pedantic does someone have to be, and you said that they have to know exactly what it was.

Yeah - at least know the genres

A hell of a lot of people wouldn't know what RTS referred to, even if they knew FPS or RPG
This I can get behind, but there are so many classes and categories of "gamer" out there that it's entirely possible for two self-proclaimed "hardcore" gamers to know each other for years and have completely mutually exclusive lists of games they'd played.
This is true, but surely a gamer will have tried various games of various genres, maybe when they started out and didn't know what kind of games they liked yet. And would probably have come into contact with such phrases on gaming forums and the like

For me they need to know how to play video games like Cal of Duty MW 2.
Rant start (don't bother reading if you don't like criticism of CoD:MW2 - well-deserved mind you)
True gamers don't play games like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 because it just kicked the entire gaming-community in its groin and especially their hardcore fans. The fans, which loved to venture on their favorite server, playing their favorite custom maps and using their favorite mods without thousands of discovered bugs and tens of thousands not yet discovered ones. They also didn't buy games for their plot holes in the campaign nor unbalanced multi-player. Also, the hardcore fans loved lean. But that wasn't be according to Activision.

By purchasing CoD:MW2 you gave your money to a bastard who probably has never played a game. Yes, we just loooooove Activision's CEO and president: Robert Kotick [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Kotick#Controversy], a figure as friendly to gamers as Jack Thompson. Robert Kotick is one of the several reasons that we're getting Shovelware today (the other reason is EA, but they're doing it more in the sport/racing-genres, which is fine by me).
Rant end

True gamers also care about gaming-politics, something which the average gamer can't be bothered to read anything about. They also react to at least one of the earlier things mentioned in this Thread, like "Hey, listen!" or "The cake is a lie".

They have to have said, "All your base are belong to us" at least once in their life.

Or Pong
Everybody knows Mario. If you know someone who doesn't, he/she's an alien who hasn't been doing his/her homework.

DONE!

They should all hate the phrase "Look at all that Juice" and know why

Spin Dizzy should not sound like an 80's synth group

There are more I could list but I'm tired and cant be bothered right now

Are you actually trying to tell me that even if you hate the game, you wouldn't know that term? Halo is the most popular title from the past decade. Again, regardless of your personal feelings, you should've heard that term.
Not everyone is going to know what you mean by Spartan, and they may just think of the actual ancient Greek spartans instead. Besides, if you mention Halo, people will more likely identify that with "Master Chief." They don't always know that he's called a spartan, because not everyone gives a shit about the story.

They need to have played at least one multiplayer game against another human being. Doesn't matter if strategy, online-FPS deathmatch, a fighting game on an arcade machine, anything.
I know, most of those who play games competitivly are douches, but in every multiplayer, from the worst profanity spamming XBL asshole to the most sophisticated TBS geek lies the same core of their very gamer soul: The love of playing and the love of winning.

I actually revoked a few people's Gamer licenses for having not played NetHack.
They did what they needed, though, and got 'em back.

You don't need to know what it is to be a gamer, per se, but considering the title, I put it here because of my past experience.
Still, one really should know NetHack if one is going to be more scholarly about their gaming.
Wasn't that game terrible?

What should someone know to be considered a gamer? That they have played and enjoyed at least one game and would try others without undue cynicism.

They must learn the lesson of civil disobedience. If someone ever tells you not to do something, then your first impulse must be to do the aforementioned thing.

Which only brings up a further question---is it necessary for gamers to participate in online gaming forums, or can someone adopt the opinion of "they're all cesspools" (which, considering most game forums, is a valid opinion to adopt) and simply go through life playing games without really learning much about them beyond the "official" gaming press, Metacritic, and Steam?
