They need to understand and enjoy more then one genre (at least three one of which has to be a platformer either 3D or Sidescrolling), know about FPS's before Halo, and last but most crucial complain about/praise stories more then graphics.

let's see i played zork on the vic20... i know the difference between space invaders, galaga and galaxian... my favorite rpg series was dragon warrior, and the chrono trigger series was good too. castlevania series (though trevor belmont was my fav) ff7 was and is the best final fantasy
Rise of the Triad (aka Rott) wolfenstien (the origional) doom 1&2 (maybe even 3) quake, quake 2 (especially with the chaos mod love that proxy launcher) unreal, Thief (technically it's a fps) Half Life (with expansions) i stopped playing fps after quake 3 arena and unreal tournament 2003 came out... can only play so much fps without at least some good story and not regurgitated annoyance, just recently getting back into them, might even get halo for the heck of it...
yeah i know many of the examples date me badly, but i'm 34 what did ya expect?
and i really wished they put out a game for the last starfighter if a game based on a movie needed to be made that was the one especially since it DIDn't have to follow the story of the movie.

is the the knowledge you expect? not knocking your example, i guess just flexing my geekery.

Spartan. Regardless of your feelings on the Halo series, you must have been in a dark hole with no electricity for the past decade if you don't recognize that term.
This is the only one in the entire thread I disagree with.
Are you actually trying to tell me that even if you hate the game, you wouldn't know that term? Halo is the most popular title from the past decade. Again, regardless of your personal feelings, you should've heard that term.
Uh, no. I've never owned an xBox, or known anyone who has owned an xBox, and Call of Duty is the most popular title of the past decade. Also, you say Spartan and I think Sparta.

I think all gamers should know what NES, SNES, N64, and PS mean.

They should also know what the Atart 2600 was and name one game from it.

funny that you said that, yesterday I went to pick up Bayonetta for my XBOX 360, and I know the guys from the store so I stayed for a few momments chatting and joking. So a guy enters the store, using a classic gamer t-shirt, and the guys started to ask about games and stuff (he seemed well informed and a proper gamer), whe he did it... he asked for Gears of War 2 for the PS3....HE SHOULD TURN IN HIS GAMER CARD

oh and if people does not know about Sega vs Nintendo or Sonic vs Mario... they are not gamers

I don't believe you. That is a blatent lie. Last I checked, we were talking about video games, not European geography...

Wrong. 'Wii' and 'Mario' are both more popular titles. Wii Fit on its own sold 22.5million, only about 5 million short of the entire Halo back catalogue of overhype.
I will agree that Mario is a popular name, but I cannot agree that you can classify all Mario games together like you can group Halo games together. Also, in 2009, Halo 3 was the most played online game for the 360. The most played original Xbox game? Halo 2. This is based on unique users, so although I agree that next year MW2 will probably surpass it as more people buy it, the fact that Halo 3 is still number one, two years after release, is mighty impressive.

I find myself shocked that I am no longer baffled by the many memes out there, when five years ago I was "WTF?" to most things I heard on the internet.

I think there are a few trigger words when it comes to being a gamer, such as "Snake" or "Sephiroth". But then, doesn't it depend on what kind of gamer you are. For instance some people will recognise some of the more obscure stuff, such as "Is there a way to take off my pants?" or "You're, pretty goood!"

Portal was great. The memes that it spawned suck.

When I say Chocobo, you better know what it is. Like the games or not.
Dammit, YES!!
Also, anyone who bosses any other gamers around needs to put the controller down on the ground, and back away slowly...

ok i do know that spartan refers to the generic space marines from halo but imo KRATOS IS THE REAL SPARTAN!!!

OP i think you can be considered a real gamer if you can hold a conversation about a game that isnt extremely main stream (cod, halo, mario, etc) or casual ( bejeweled, wii ****, peggle). also they should have knowledge of the history of series that they claim to be fans of (dont say you love mgs4 if you havent played the others because you really have no clue of whats going on).

Anyway, I'd say sticking to just one genre/company/etc. Gamer is someone who has a lot vaster knowledge of gaming than knowing how to score 1337 headshots in FPSes.
Yay. :)

"I are an gamer!"
"So what do you play?"
"HALO COD GEARS OMFGBOOMHEADSHOT LOLOLOLOL"
"Sooo...ever tried any platformers?"
"Pla-what?"
"RPGs?"
"OMFG RPG AND DANGER CLOSE IS TEH ROXXOR"
"..."

Anyway, I think everyone should know about the Zerg rush. Maybe not necessarily that it started with Starcraft, but it's since evolved to mean any quick rush with lots of stuff...it can even apply to shooters if you coordinate with a team.

So if my team harsh rushes your base in CoD and I yell "OMG ZERG RUSH KEKEKEKE", you should understand.

Ok, there were a couple of important ones here I agree with like the Konami code and a few I didn't like Spartan sorry to the Gaylo fans but non gamers may know spartans with out knowing games. I can't say a knowledge of 1337speak cause really that just makes you a douch. Beyond the need to PLAY GAMES i think a knowledge (even only moderate knowledge) of the 7 ages of gaming (gold, silver, bronze, copper, aluminum, tin, and plastic). My mother works at a daycare and during the summer I loaned them my systems to distract the kids with some simple games but at the same time I educated them a little before they could play them. These kids never saw an Atari 2600 and couldn't understand how you could play with only one stick and one button.

Only thing I can think of is Never think your too mature to play a Mario or pokemon game. You don't even have to like em, Just don't act all mature and sophisticated because you play "mature games" like CoD and Halo(not bashing them just making a point).

Other than that don't treat games like a trendy accessory that you throw away the moment your friends do.

A gamer should simply know how gaming works as a media and enjoy more than one genre. Otherwise, they can know whatever.

FPS or RPG for example...
Yeah - at least know the genres

A hell of a lot of people wouldn't know what RTS referred to, even if they knew FPS or RPG
This I can get behind, but there are so many classes and categories of "gamer" out there that it's entirely possible for two self-proclaimed "hardcore" gamers to know each other for years and have completely mutually exclusive lists of games they'd played.

Do you know yourself, 'cos it's just team fortress 2.

OP: they need to know what the benefits are of pcs vs. consoles.

There are no end to things that may define someone as a gamer. However, this whole Sony vs Microsoft vs Nintendo war does not interest me at all. I know that I will be able to have a good discussion with my fellow soldiers who have been through the Sierra vs LucasArts war. I don't care which side you're on (I was personally a double-spy).
