I actually revoked a few people's Gamer licenses for having not played NetHack.
They did what they needed, though, and got 'em back.
You don't need to know what it is to be a gamer, per se, but considering the title, I put it here because of my past experience.
Still, one really should know NetHack if one is going to be more scholarly about their gaming.

They need to know "speedy thing goes in, speedy thing goes out" and know the words to "Still Alive." Also when they hear "Hey listen" they want to shoot the next fairy they see, know the three major console companys, (Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo), spend more then two hours a day playing games and know who Mario, Link, Master Chef, and Chell are.

You can name at least three people who have created some of the most memorible games. ex. Kazunori Yamauchi, Hideo Kojima, Shigeru Miyamoto, David Jaffe, etc...
To call oneself a true gamer, you must know how to access the secret warp zone at the end of World 1-2 in Super Mario Bros.

Nothing elitist like knowing/loving Mario, Pong, Sonic etc.
Having memorized a controller means you've played a console enough to be considered a gamer.
Edit, or for the PC gamers, hot-keys, WASD and the mouse movements should be as natural as breathing.

If you play games, you are a gamer. That's not a cop-out, it's just logic
However, I am rather impressed/ inclined to join in whenever I hear:

Well sure, agreed. But generally speaking they're not really going to well know or understand the significance of a quote (or how it might relate to other things in gaming, if connections exist beyond just in-game) if they haven't played it.scnj said:
The Cake is a Lie is a good one, but I've heard too many total idiots spouting that with no understanding of what Portal even is. Though that's probably just because it's the people I know and that they've heard people that understand it say it. Overall I think it's a great one.
