Holy crap... I guess I dodged a bullet by never going to the forums there at all. I feel like I need to go wash now... for an hour with hot water and some brain bleach.
Apparently I dodged two by first reading the rest of this thread before reading tvtropes thread.
Thanks, I guess.
You might want some brain bleach Salutem. I'd share mine but I need it right now... sweet throne I need it right now.

'fraid there is not much left. I spend too much time on the internet for that.

It comes from a youtube channel that shows just how much tropers need to keep their personal opinions and fetishes from spewing over into the trope pages. Without strong editors, you get the rather disturbing anecdotes and creepy opinions that got the site into trouble with Google's Adsense.

Google basically said "Clean this shit up, or we cut your funding." Cue shitstorm of people yelling thoughtcrime and coming up with ludicrous defenses for works that probably shouldn't be on the wiki in the first place.
Wait, didn't Google do this like a year or two ago? I remember there being a huge disclaimer at the top as well as a detailed explanation to what happened and how the mods were hard at work to fix the stuff for Google. Have TVTropes not learned a thing since then?

Then again, you are correct about the forums. I visited them twice. I decided I didn't want to deal with the users there and never did it again. I still have a "registration" for the spoiler tags though. Damn annoying things.

EDIT: *sigh* can't tag properly.

This incident is the second time Google has decided to crack down. While they have apparently been appeased, Fast Eddie decided that he wanted to do more than just the bare minimum to keep the site going, so he decided to continue purging the creepy content from the site.

That's actually good. I'm mega tired right now, so I don't see the problem with that. Can you explain it to me. I'm serious, I literally couldn't follow the discussion up to that point and I tried. It seems that some TVT users were outraged but how does SA fit in to the situation? Don't they want TVT to be purged?

I really can't describe everything, since it would take too long. This Sums it up better. [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Administrivia/TheSecondGoogleIncident?from=Main.TheSecondGoogleIncident] It gives you the rundown, and then links you to the forum discussions that cover more.

As for Something Awful's association, the SA thread posted is the fourth generation discussion about the depraved attitudes that permeate the TVT forums, and it is a good way to keep up to date on the most important developments in the debacle, since it is focused in a single thread instead of spread across an entire forum.

It's also hilarious and soul crushing at the same time.

HO. LEE. SHE. EET.

There was some talk of shutting down the forums for good, in response to which some tropers started to consider setting up alternate forums.
"Look, we see it's a problem. The best course of action is to nuke it from orbit."

Man, FastEddie has really stepped up. Can we actually see *gasp* an improvement?

Unlikely, for every step forward, there's two steps back. The last good mod, who doesn't seem to be insane just quit today, going on an "indefinite leave" from the forums. Bobby G is gone, and Fast Eddie is leaving most of the review to a board of Tropers while he works on the new tech to let them work better. If Eddie had just continued the purge on his own, then the shock of the sudden shift might have jerked something into gear.

However, the problem is that when he leaves it to others, that don't have mod powers to control the masses, they become more open to criticism and can be pressured. For all we know, it'll just revert to how bad it's always been. It's only with constant pressure that anything will change, but I long since gave up on it.

Huh, this is strange, maybe I've just been desensitised to creepiness online over time but I've never noticed anything particularly strange about TVT pages themselves (never used the forums so no comments there), though I don't tend to look at sexual tropes. From a quick glance the Something Awful thread seemed to rely a lot on cherry picking bad comments too, I've seen worse here on the Escapist (From genocide to misanthropy to rape) which someone could find and list if they wanted to.

The site itself I find is mediocre, it can be interesting to find examples of themes in stories or descriptions of those stereotypes you kinda know but can't name, but it's poorly written and badly organised.

To be fair, most of the trash is cordoned off to the forums now. Most of the treasure troves of troper creepiness have been carved from the wiki like tumors. Fetish Fuel, It Just Bugs Me and Troper Tales are the three biggest offenders for the creepy stuff. You can google them, but they are no longer supported on the site.

The big problem comes from the sex tropes, rape tropes, and the lack of social awareness that comes when categorizing and listing the tropes. Using creepy as hell wording an generally excessive detail to describe things that should just be listed.

I still don't get why you're whining that the TVT forums are basically another *chan.
It isn't the best answer but it might stem from the fact that it either isn't another *Chan or that *Chan users from what I have seen are hyperbolic enough to raise the possibility of irony. At least among some of the users.

...TvTropes has forums? Huh, this is news to me. Now I'm tempted to go and click around to see if it's really as bad as everyone says it is.

This ought to be interesting...

I've pretty much stopped using the site, I used to be on it everyday now I go there once or twice a month. I never visited the forum and after seeing the This Troper videos I'm glad I didn't.

Captcha: save it
I don't know if we can, TVT might be beyond saving at this point.

I just stuck to the horror pages to watch people freak out in text. I didn't know that it had all this crap in it.

*sigh* I remember when Tvtropes used to be fun. Mind you, I really haven't ever gone to the forums that much and just flat out shortly after I started going there. Not due to creepiness, but sheer bitchiness.

Go to the Devil May Cry reboot section sometime and admire the sheer amount of hate people will spew towards a game. Its friggin' ridiculous.

And that's without getting into how some pages are so horribly biased in the way their written.

How lovely of you to call me a lunatic for enjoying a thought-provoking story with a good mix of comedy and drama and fairly complex characters.
lolololol. For the love of god tell me you're being sarcastic.

OT: I had no idea TVT had this creepy side, that's fucked up, as is this video.

I don't see any harm in them trimming all the bullshit, after all you don't see them putting up say, porn film tropes. So why should crazy japanese "age 13 girls are legal in our country but under-aged in the rest of the world" paedophilia be allowed?
