I don't think it's exclusively gay. It's all very dependent on where you live. In some countries, guy friends can walk around holding hands. In others (America) you might be called a ****** if you do.

I don't personally hug my guy friends, and they don't hug theirs. I don't know about them, but it feels uncomfortable to me. Like, the male figure just isn't very nice to hug.

My friends are important to me and a hug with a close friend is great, especially as we have all moved away so don't get to see each other very often. Hell, when I was at uni I'd known my flatmates for 3 months but when we were back together in January there were a lot of reunion hugs.

now, one day a few years ago a friend mentioned it was their birthday coming up and said to me 'what you going to give me for my birthday' to which I replied 'I'll give you a hug'. his response was 'no thanks, I'm not gay' which I thought was stupid. I just this minute told that story to my mum and she pretty much agreed with my mates response.

what do you think? is one friend hugging another gay? or is it just friendly? Joey and Chandler do it all the time!

In that particular context you give, yeah, that's kind of inappropriate behavior between two men without a sexual interest.

As for Joey and Chandler...in addition to that being fiction, you know that some fans saw a gay thing going on their there right?

A quick hug to a very old friend who you haven't seen in years is fine. Someone's spouse/mother just died, fine. But giving a hug like its a present? That's just...well it most definately sounds like you were trying to "come out" to him as being interested.

completely wrong, he is a friend and nothing more. like with Joey and Chandler, yes they hug a lot but they hug when they are happy about something. a birthday is a happy time.

One thing i noticed is that any non sports-related physical contact is considered gay between men. Men are in our society show any weakness is is considered wrong. and close connections are considered a weakness i think. I may be over simplifying. And no. Nothing in and off it self in inherently gay. Also if my friend thought that he wasn't secure in his masculinity to do something like that i would be worried. But that just me.

I've hugged my friends tons of times, I'm still straight, and my friends aren't weirded out about it at all. So I doubt it's gay to do so, unless suddenly your friend makes a go for your butt.
