I feel this is their master plan: piss off the pc gamers so that they go out and buy a console. Quite clever. Too clever for Ubisoft.

And what happens if a server fails? Do THOUSANDS of people just lose their save files?

I had enough of internet activated games with that whole steam thing. Every time you get capped; you can't play 1/2 of the games that you bought with money you earned in sweat. It's bloody annoying.

"Clap clap clap"

So, you finally reveal your true colours, la villain Ubisoft! I never expected to tell your customers in public to go fuck themselves, but there you did it. So, why bother with the PC market in the first place if you are gonna piss them to the end? Oh, I know! "Activision did it and that was cool. So we jump in the "coolness" bandwagon!"

So its like Steam where you need your account information whenever, and instead of digital download you run a real disc online?

Shit idea.
While my internet connection is perfectly good, as soon as I decide to play any recent-ish PC game (Single player anyway, which is 95% of the time), everything non-essential gets shut down completely, including my internet connection.
I'm a whore for Frames Per Second, I have a monsterous spec PC, I do everything to squeze ever bit of power from it, I don't WANT to be online when running my PCs gaming profile.
Even steam has an offline mode for fuck sake.

Yes, I can see it now.

*Playing a Ubisoft game*
*Notoriously unreliable internet crashes*

I'm not sure whether this is worthy or just a /facepalm or it will require me banging my head against the desk at the stupidity.

Edit:

I see the industry still refuses the online aspects of a game as a "carrot" and have SP offline and un update able. Its a good middle ground that at least tries to understand the situation....

I personally, as someone who loves PC gaming and think its better, thinks the industry Better just abandon the platform.

PC gaming is dead, why? its to easy to pirate on it and people are to willing to just steal. I know I would just say screw it never make a game for it again. Also outside of a small few, PC games don't make nearly the same amount of money. Its sad but I blame the fans for the death of PC gaming, not the industry.
1. Go to any torrent site
2. Type Xbox 360/Wii/iPhone/etc. into the search field
3. ????
4. Profit

I give it 6 weeks before someone figures out how to trick the program into believing that a local storage space is the remote server.
What 6 weeks? All you need to do is find the variables in the system that deal with the actual connection part and the saving part. Then you need to rewrite them and voila.
They have much more knowledgeable people around to make it not that easy. That after is the whole point, making it insanely difficult to pirate within the first few months.

Seriously after the first few months piracy is not as big of an issue, many will suck it up and buy the game they really want to play if they are unable to pirate it. That leaves those that would never have paid for it in the fist place around to pirate the game at a later date.

I couldn't have put it better myself. Thanks for taking the time to do that because, Lord knows, I wouldn't have. I vote for this to be published on the Escapist front page... 'video game producers: listen and learn!'

OT: Ubisoft, you've made me :(

I always had this problem with Steam that completely makes me hate this plan.

It was quite annoying that almost the entire time I had Steam I lost my connection to the Internet. Nowadays I only buy old games for the PC, because they're the only ones that work on my shite rig.
Doesn't steam have an offline mode?

IF I can't game without big brother watching over my back, then fuck it, I won't game at all.

It's not so damn important as to need to sell every bit of my dignity and freedom and privacy to play it.

Steam is already troublesome, but at least i can activate offline mode if i need it.

Impulse never did any trouble for me so far, it doesnt even start when you load a game you got from it.

About UBISOFT
Well, now, that just make even more trouble for the legitimate people who try to play the games they paid with a slow/inexistant internet conection. Making your ability to save/load your game linked to the ISP service? Meh.
Im pretty sure that pirates will find ways around it in less than a day. Thus making their DRM system pointless.

And then, they will realize it wont slow down piracy at all.
What will be the next step for copy protection? Even more invasive? I can only imagine what they will try... nah, chances are they will do it and most people will silently accept whatever is thrown their way, as usual.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
the only way this would be embraced is if they also give you the offline option instead of making it sound really stupid
