No, it's not time for a new console generation.

Part if the issue deveopers are having now is the cost of developing games to meet our current content/graphical/performance standards. Upping the standards ups the cost. All those beautiful realistic environments and objects cost a lot of time and money to develope. The more detail, the more expencive it gets.

On top of that, is there really any need for it? Games are already approaching photo realism. At this piont, any increas in graphics is marginal. It's not like going from the NES to the SNES to the N64 where it was a night and day difference. We reaching the point of diminishing returns with what can be done on a flat screen.

On a personal note, I would rather see devs put their time into developing solid game-play and stories. The higher graphical capabilities of modern consoles seem to lead devs to cater to graphics whores... do we really want to take that to the next level?

Meh, I don't blame ubisoft for not playing around in dangerous waters in dangerous times. Nintendo has gotten away with playing in its stale water for god knows how long and gotten away with it.
In terms of a new console generation, I highly doubt we will see one anytime soon, new console generations usually follow the wave of technology. And we really haven't seen a ton of new and spectacular stuff that would apply to consoles. Sure there are ideas out there for discs that could like a TB and other rendering technology that would use less processing power, but until that stuff actually gets put into use and adapted for gaming we won't see a new gen of consoles.

Its either going to be nintendo or microsoft. Sony has said before they dont give a shit if they come out first or not because they will always create the better console. They pretty much proved it with both the ps2 and ps3 although it was alittle expensive at first. Nintendo doesnt need to bring out a new console as the wii doenst really lack anything that its core audience wants.

Microsoft however is still relying on people being complete morons, and hey its worked out great for them so far. Eventually after people get bent over by the microsoft another 10 times or so they will realise that its a bad idea to keep going back to them, well atleast we hope so. That is when microsoft will have to release something new. At which time it will have dozens of hardware problems and microsoft will blame the consumer for them and after a few years only then agree to cover half of them with an extended warrenty.
I will give Sony some credit. They build the better hardware, but they took a big risk pushing Blu-ray with their system and it paid off for them. However, Nintendo won this console generation, period. 360 is currently in second, though that can change in the next couple of years. No one is catching Nintendo.

Though I do have to say, MS made great strides from the original box to the 360, and have sorely learned their lesson from the RRoD (to the tune of 1 billion dollars) so I doubt their next gen console will be a similar effort to the 360, hardware-wise.

The biggest advancement that will happen with the next console generation won't be the term 'better', but rather the term 'more'. More sprites, more pixels, more enemies more players, more bullets, etc.... with better processing power and technology the limits of our current games will be expanded.

After what they did with the slim I really dont think they have learned their lesson yet. It and all their consoles still have the exact same problems that they had 5 years ago when it came out. The introduction of the jasper chip reduced the rrod which was only 1 of many problems the 360 had. They eventually did admit to alot of the problems and said they were their fault but refused to do anything about it. One of these was the disk scratching issue where the slightest vibration could actually cause your 360 to destroy the game inside it.
Got any facts or figures to back that up? I've seen reports and estimates that Jasper consoles have failure rates of less than 4%. Granted it's less than 2 years into their cycle but they definitely seem to have resolved the problem. I have a Jasper myself that I bought over a year ago now and have had no problems with it.

Yes the slims and the like still scratch the disks if you move the 360 while it's on... not sure why they didn't feel it necessary to fix that problem, but it does not 'destroy' the game. I've had two discs scratched this way and after buffing them out they work fine.

As for not doing anything about it, how about extending the RRoD and E74 warranty to 3 years, while effectively costing them over 1 billion dollars in replacements and repairs? I'd say they did something about it. Granted, they had to, but to say they did nothing about it is pure BS.

Quit spewing your 360 hatred and maybe stay on topic... which is the next console generation by the way, in case you missed while foaming at the mouth to spread some more hatred.

Yes I know the jasper has a low failure rate, its alit higher then 4% though. However the slim is experiencing basically its own red ring already which is bad news.

They only extended the warrenty after a long time and origionally denied anything was wrong with the 360. As for the disk scratching if you live in an older house something as simple as turning on your stereo or your dryer can cause the 360 to scratch the game inside.

Im not sure if you really know what the topic was about anyways. It was ubisoft saying that the way the current market is its not an economically sound idea to invest in multiple AAA titles especially new IPs. They are so expensive that unless its a top top tier game your not going to make enough money off it. So they said its unlikely they will be creating any new ones or running that many. Once a new console generation comes this may change.

Note they never said they want a new console generation, that one is comeing or that one should be coming soon. Just saying that in the current market it is very hard to introduce new IPs.
Alright, sorry for the overreaction, just thought you were hating on the 360 for a bit there. Have there been any problems with the slims? I haven't seen any reports of that just yet. The conversation quickly steered to how long the next generation would take and how many Ubisoft sequels we would have before then.

Well they still got the same problem of not locking disks in place. That and the red light of death is the new red ring. It is supposed to shut down before it overheats but the problem is that it never turns back on, you just have a red light. Its not as common as the rrod but you still hear about it often enough.
I'd heard of the shut down situation but still have not heard reports of it causing more problems.... link?

At any rate, while I don't think the next MS console will be perfect I have to have faith in MS that it will at least be better. Much like they do with windows. Vista sucked, 7 is good...

And nothing of value was lost.

Seriously the only good thing Ubisoft has made recently is Assassin's Creed, they ruined the best thing about Splinter Cell.

Well that's annoying, but we can at least look forward to new instalments of their current IPs, like Screed and Ghost Recon.
