My favorite was VIII largely because I liked the characters the most (Especially Laguna) but something I've noticed is that a lot of people like the first one they play the most.

I've also noticed that a lot of people say Final Fantasy VI was the best because it's the 'cool' thing to do. I'm not saying it's a bad game, far from it, I've just noticed this trend.

Tactics! That's right, I like a spinoff more than one of the numbered games. However, FF7 is second place.
Ditto, it had the only form of tolerable turn based combat for me. AND... I could have monsters and use units that I cared about instead of the twit and his twit friends.

They're all good from 9 and before in my opinion sequels and stuff not included as I haven't played CC, etc but from 10 on it goes down hill in my opinion. With 10 being the peak but that might be because FF7 was my very first RPG so I was would have prefered the more casual feel to 7-9.

It any good? Worth buying?
No, it's awful. The characters are unlikable and the combat is stupid.
Um what? Are you forgetting someone?

*cough* Balthier *cough*
Balthier and Vossler were actually the only ones I liked even a little bit, but they still aren't interesting.

Here's my problem with the characters: They live in a tiny little country right between two massive empires, odds are that one of them will take them over. So what do they do? They fight a pointless war, get their king killed, and lose to the Archadians but Archadia shows mercy towards them and doesn't treat them badly at all but for some odd reason Vaan has blind, unfounded hatred toward Archadia (Granted they killed his brother but he should be mad at his own kingdom for fighting a pointless war) which turns out to be venerated by some stupid evil plot that I can't remember (I played about halfway through so I don't remember what happens). So the lesson is kids: "Blind hatred is good as long as you turn out right in the end." which is stupid.

Other problems: Vaan is basically 'Desert Tidus', Penelo is annoying, and Basch dresses like a hobo clown. The 'Espers' look really stupid (Except for the fat one, which I like for some reason) the weapons system is overly-complicated and looks like a game of Majhong, and THE COMBAT SUCKS!!

I've recently got back into RPG mode and decided to dig out some classics for the PS2. Began playing Final Fantasy 8-which in my opinion is the best of the selection.
But im pretty sure a load of you will think FF7 if you've had the chance to play it. Just wondered what those of you lucky enough to play it thought was the greatest?
Final Fantasy is not a RPG in the end. Final Fantasy falls under "JRPG". In a true RPG you choose a role, and have options that at least effect how you go about the story to some extent, or at least the ability to personalize your characters growth outside of equipment (IE controlled, or trainable stats) JRPGs break such a thing. The only thing you have control of is your part composition, attacks, and equipment, and if that is all you need to make an RPG then CoD4, S.T.A.L.K.E.R: SoC, and soul calibur are RPGs...

I was never a fan of Final Fantasy, I will be first to admit (FF7 to me was the worst. Horrible story telling, horrible lines, horrible character developement, an inconsistent world (Why the fuck doesnt that asshole cloud just use a phoenix down on Aeris and a Soft Potion and Red XIII's father!?), and a half baked "days of our lives can do better" story) But to be honest... I say the "Best" of all that I have played would be either...
6: Very nice story for a FF game, the dialouge was bad, but camp at the same time which made it charming, and decent graphics, not to mention such a large game for a SNES title)
9: I gotta admit, 9 broke the usual 3D FF train. It had likeable characters, it understood it was a fantasy game and stopped trying to be so dramatic every waking second, and all around was pleasent,
1: Because they knew they had bad dialouge, so the main characters just kept their mouth shut (Unlike most other FF games in which they should have done that)

But ultimate wise in the end... I am going to have to lean towards 9. The graphics just fleshed out the world better then FF6 could in the end.

Yeah, that is why most people go "ZOMFG FFVII IS MAH BISHII!" it's because FFVII did nothing new, did everything save for combat worse then FF6 (It's combat was just more colorful then 6's) but the thing is, when 3d came around, it was most people who liked FF's taste of 3D, therefore it has the most lasting memory despite its cruddieness. And for people who didn't play FFVII, this was around when the internet was becoming far more mainstream and easier to access, so it allowed FFVII to be most peoples deflowering for the franchise, which again, falls under what you said about 6.

The best is Final Fantasy X and the second-best is Final Fantasy X-2.

It could be added that turn-based combat is extremely much better in my book.
Yes I liked X the most...but 7 was OK too I guess...

Couldn't have been said better! Still great games regardless.

I loved Final Fantasy VII when I was very young. Never got the chance to fully complete it though.

The most fun I had with Final Fantasy VII was when I walked everywhere I went, and my friend was watching... He came close to scratching his eyes out from sheer boredom.

My Verdict:

FF1: Classic and a must play. Also, Fighters are hax.
FF2-FF4: Also classics, with FF4 standing out the most
FF5: Let's forget about this one...
FF6: Best one out of the 2-D installments by far and my personal favorite in the entire series. Every single character is well-written and nothing seems overly ridiculous. Whenever I play a new Final Fantasy, I subconsciously compare it to this one.
FF7: Ground-breaking work which got milked to death years after its inception by corporate fatcats and annoying fanboys/fangirls. Most people that "hate" it are just being contrarian; in truth, there is nothing to really hate about this game, especially when comparing it to other games at the time.
FF8: Overrated emo shit. No seriously. Only decent character in this game is Rinoa and she is just fanboy bait.
FF9: A nice return to Final Fantasy's roots. Most people either love or hate this game; I personally like it. Vivi is also one of my favorite characters in the entire series.
FF10: All the stuff that sucked about FF8 is back and whinier than ever. Sorry you have a daddy-complex Tidus, no one fucking cares. Like FF8, the only decent characters are the females who, again, are just fanboy bait.
FFX-2: Ugh. Don't get me started.
FF12: Decent story that was only half-realized. If Balthier was the main character and the two prepubescent characters were removed from the game, it would have been better as a whole. The combat system was terrible as by the end of the game, it basically played itself. I give it a C overall, B for effort.

Great: VIII, V
Edit: Also, goddamn blitzball
Blitzball can just feck off. I wouldn't mind as much, but they encourage you to play it if you want Wakka's Good trance moves (or whatever X called it).

Dawn of souls for me, I'm kind of a nostalgiac, and it had just enough combination of the story, and the side dungeons to keep me occupied for a long itme.

FF VI, VII, and VIII are my personal favorites.

That's right, I said it!
I liked VIII.
