The best ones in my books are still and forever will be: Tactics (PS1/PSP, not that gameboy shite), FF4, FF6, FF7, Crisis Core, and Recently Dissidia for actually doing something new in the fighting game genre and doing it WELL. All these games (save for Dissidia) have the best stories of the games I have played, I have yet to play 12 so I reserve judgment and the only one that I actually hate of the core franchise is 8.
If I could greentext you on "best story" I would. Not that they story isn't good, it's just far from the best.

Go play Soul Nomad and the World Eaters, and wash it down with a little Fire Emblems 7 and 9.
*facepalm* This isn't ABOUT other RPG's, this is about which FINAL FANTASIES you liked. And so far, the ones I have mentioned have been the best of the series. Even if we were talking about best game stories, I'd still include FF6 and Tactics on my list, so don't go quoting others for pointless reasons.

I really liked FF7 (don't start), but I think my favorite is FF6. Out of the main series, this one I thought had the best story and one of the best villains. I can still hear Kefka's laugh.

I've recently got back into RPG mode and decided to dig out some classics for the PS2. Began playing Final Fantasy 8-which in my opinion is the best of the selection.
my only problem with 8 is the draw system. if you used a certain magic you got weaker, other than that i liked it a lot.

OT: 7 was amazing but some parts were annoying, so i gotta say 6 and 9

You said best stories of the GAMES you've played, not FINAL FANTASY GAMES.
Games as in referring to the topic at hand (FINAL FANTASY GAMES), jesus is it that hard to understand...I mean seriously...you really couldn't figure that out. I'm not even going to bother arguing over your little rant about 6 as it's pointless, but seriously, don't quote and imply they have bad taste in story for no damn reason.

Semantics dear boy, learn them.

But I think you misunderstand. I'm not saying you have bad taste in story. I AM saying that 7 has a better plot than 6 (which is still a very good game), but that's not really what I'm trying to get at. What I AM getting as is pimping out a rather obscure game (Soul Nomad) and a far less obscure but still fairly under the radar in the west series (Fire Emblem).

My only non-nitpicky issue is that FF5 is not in your list.
Although i absolutely hate throwing this card out, but learn what opinion is. This has nothing to do with semantics so just drop it and accept other peoples tastes. I didn't mind 5, but it personally does not stack up to my choices. God I don't even know why you decided to zero me out from every other posters on this thread. "Hey look!! he liked game X better than Game y!! lets nit pick him despite everyone else posting their personal favorites as well."

i can´t pick only one! ff6 for the awesome world and the many sidequests and secrets, ff7 was the most atmospheric and and had also a really great backstory revealed, ff8 was really beautiful and different by the time. since then i haven´t really played any of them.

I love all the even numbered ones, besides 12. 8 was the first I played and finished, but 10is my favourite. 4 Stood out above the classics for me, but 6 and 2 were great games too.

Hard to say which is the greatest but considering in terms of music, gameplay and characters I'm going to say FFVI.

VII was the first I played, but X was the one that got me addicted. The battle system was freaking AWESOME! The story also had some truly shocking moments, it's only flaw was the HORRIFYING voice work.

Also, let me put this out: Areith's death? Not a tragedy.

But im pretty sure a load of you will think FF7 if you've had the chance to play it. Just wondered what those of you lucky enough to play it thought was the greatest?
Seven is impossibly overrated.

IV is the best, and the DS remake is pure gold.

First one I played was VIII (huh...Ultimecia?..wtf!), then picked up VII (Aeris died, so what...never used her anyway), then continued with IX. So far the PSX era.

Started with X but never finished it myself (saw my friends play and finish it though). Btw, Tidus annoyed the crap out of me (not as much as XII's Vaan though). Invested around 50 hours into XII but never finished it. Never really mastered the Gambit system....but I did master the art of pressing the X button to attack.

So...out of the ones I played...*drums* the gold medal goes to IX. Yes... it's "kiddy" and Zidane in a way resembles Tidus (I guess it's the other way around..) but nevertheless...in terms of the overal experience it's my favorite. Nice story, nice battlesystem, not too shabby characters (Vivi being most memorable).

7 is my favorite, up until about half-way between CD2 where
cloud goes into the coma
I've got about 5 different accounts stuck on that part
other than that, it's a freaking brilliant game
