Uncharted 2 was easily the best gaming experience of the year; it was a very worthy winner.

Sales are completely irrelevant. Billions of paperclips are sold every year, but I don't think they'll win 'gadget of the year' any time soon.

Borderlands didn't get nominated because it wasn't a very good game.

Yeah, Uncharted 2 delivered on what I expected of it.

MW2 has had, like what, 6 patches so far and it's been out for a little over a month? That just screams botched all over it.

Left 4 Dead 2 is really a palette swap of the first.

Assassin's Creed 2 is WAY too new to have even been nominated.

Arkham Asylum was good, but not necessarily GOTY quality. If it'd come out last year, then definitely.
I agree with everything you said. If I had to vote for anything besides Uncharted 2, it would be Assassins Creed 2, but that only came out a few weeks ago so it hasn't been out long enough.

At least Uncharted managed to meld the things it stole from seamlessly. It's pretty, safe, and an industry favorite. There's no reason to be angry.

No, Uncharted shouldn't have gotten it. Either Modern Warfare 2, or Borderlands should have.
Please, elaborate. Why in God's name should Modern Warfare 2 have been named game of the year?
It obvoiusly has nothing to do with being the best selling game of the year and making $500, 000 in 5 days. That can't be part of it.
You act as if popular things are always good.

Uh. No.

Plants Vs. Zombies should have won.

And yet because Ubisoft chose to release it this year rather than pushing the release to next year, it's no longer a candidate for GotY.

Great thought process there.

No I don't agree. Borderlands gets my vote.
My exact words that I came here to post. I never played Uncharted or its sequel, but it's been a while since a game grabbed me the same way Borderlands did. Even after I beat it with its disappointing ending, I still kept playing it because it was fun. Most games just aren't that fun anymore, even if they are really good. I think TF2 is the closest thing in recent years that just keeps me playing for no other reason. Even Bioshock, which earned an instant second playthrough for me, just wasn't as much fun as it was just engrossing. It was like reading a book or watching a movie that you wanted to experience it again to pick up the things you missed. I find Borderlands to be horribly shallow by comparison, but that doesn't change anything for me while I'm having that much fun.

Edit: Borderlands IS a good game. It's a good game when you get my brother to play it until 3am on a work day while every other similar RPG released in recent years gets scoffed at by him. Seriously, there is no way you could get him to play games like Oblivion or Fallout 3, but I hook him up with Borderlands, and instantly he's addicted. I'm the gamer of my family, and he beat the game twice before I finished it once. As it said above, there are flaws in the game, but it was just fun, and that is what gaming is about.

Also, bonus points for it being a co-op campaign game while every other game (besides L4D) is a deathmatch shooter if it offers multiplayer. Borderlands needs credit for that because no one makes co-op games these days.

And how does it make it good? Twilight and New Moon both sold like crap, and yet it still sucks.

OT: Not too sure about Uncharted 2 winning game of year, considering I haven't played it yet, but i think Arkham Asylum should probably have gotten it.

I'm not saying that makes it good, I'm just pointing out one reason why is might have become it. I don't actually remember ever saying it was good.

I was for Arkham Asylum, but I guess Uncharted is fine even though I only played the demo.

My vote would be a 2-way between Modern Warfare 2 and Uncharted 2. Uncharted 2 had the best single player of the year and MW2 had (by FAR) the best multiplayer (for the console versions anyhow).

Hm... I dunno... it just had a pretty epic (not that deep) campaign, awesome multiplayer, OH WAIT IT BROKE ALL KINDS OF RECORDS ON SALES.

But Uncharted deserved it.
