Borderlands was boring. And what else could they give it to, ODST? pfft.
Yes, because ODST, Borderlands, and Uncharted 2 were the only games released this year.
Here's a short list of the great games this year, with my picks for GOTY material starred:
*Street Fighter IV--it breathed new life into a very-tired genre, had addictive game play and beautiful presentation, and has smooth online multiplayer
Halo Wars--brought a streamlined RTS experience to consoles and proved that the Halo fictional universe has potential to be the new Star Wars
*Shadow Complex--the best 2D graphics since Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, incredible level design, big epic moments, and near-endless replay value
*Scribblenauts--probably the best idea in gaming this year, should get nominated for originality if nothing else
Magic:The Gathering-Duel of the Planeswalkers--a flawless adaptation of the classic card game; all of the reasons why Magic is a great game are reasons why this is a great game
*Batman: Arkham Asylum--do I really have to explain why this game should be in the running?
Halo 3: ODST--the worst thing you can say about this game is that it should not have the full $60 price tag because it's too short. It's still a pretty good game with a unique take on a now-standard multiplayer mode
*Assassin's Creed II--improves in every way on the original, the graphics are just plain beautiful, and is chock-full of replay value
Modern Warfare 2--the most addictive FPS multiplayer yet, and while the single-player campaign is short I'd rather have it short and sweet than stuffed w/ filler (like, say, most RPGs)
Dragon Age: Origins--speaking of RPGs, I'm not interested in this game personally but you can't argue with the reviews.
*Dawn of War II--it's a squad shooter that plays like an RTS with RPG elements, practically has an entirely different game for multiplayer, and is the first game outside of the shooter genre to have a horde mode
And finally, your favorite: *Uncharted 2. Again, not played it but you can't argue with the numbers. I will say it is one of the only two PS3 games I even care about; the other isn't even out yet (that would be God of War 3). So I will likely pick up a PS3 to play it. Yes, it does deserve GOTY but seriously: it's not like this is an easy decision. An easier decision than last year, which saw just as many great games released in the last four months of the year alone, but still not a no-question kind of situation.
