Rap music, casual sex, social pressure, alcohol, drugs, anime, manga, japan in general, Freud, adversising etc.
I will list in birth control in as they remove a lot of fear from doing the nasty, that is until they fail.
Love is a relatively new concept and it is something that is difficult to define because it does not actually exist. Liking, lusting, wanting, are all considered as love. Having sex is the commonest, for some the only, way of expressing it.
Right now the world of the youngling is literally a fuck fest. There is a certain pressure in being young.
Ah, whatever. I got some my point across. The world is fucked up, so that is all that happens.

Puritanism about sex in families and society at large usually means that safe sex - and the significant downsides of not playing it safe - isn't explained and stressed properly. Look at the US, where sex is taboo, abstinence is (officially) totally hot, and teen pregnancy rates some of the highest in the industrialised world.

There have been something of a puritanical resurge in the last decade or so in mainstream society, and additionally parents seem to no longer think it their responsibility to educate their offspring on this issue; maybe they think the schools will always do it properly, maybe they think the internet has told them all they need to know about sex, but either way they're wrong.

There are so many teen mummies in my village, and I don't understand it :/

Especially since it's in wales and almost everything on NHS is free, so there's no excuse for like not even being on the pill if you're going to be a slag, because tbh, most people aren't in long term relationships when this happens.

Even my 15 year old cousin (not even in a relationship) just got the implant.

It could be something to do with se ed? I went to a private school and the sex ed was 'Argh we'll shock you with childbirth so you'll never want that to happen to your fanny!' Then, 'This is how you put a condom', then 'You should never ever ever have sex, unless you're married'.

Obviously that didn't happen, but nobody got pregnant. Must have helped that right next door to my school was a sexual health clinic, where you could just pop over and get the pill. If that was available to more schools I guess the problem wouldn't be so bad.

It´s good tv though, and a great study in social heritage.

Simple (99%) solution to the problem, all teenage girls get the implant at 13. Job done.
That seems to be quite popular now. I've seen posters for it a bus stations and things. What I want to know is why I can't get implanted with some cool chemical as well. Like whatever Captain America had.

As a former inhabitant of the Isle of Wight, which had for a long time had the highest teenage pregnancy rates in the UK, I can say I'm one of the few people from my class at high school that doesn't have at least one child, and that most of them had a child in their teens.

I think that firstly, there was a lot of boredom involved. Nowhere to go, nothing to do, and what little there was was shut during the winter- there was nothing to do but get drunk, get high and have sex.

Also, while it was unfortunate that the gender spread of the local population meant that there were more guys aged 20-40 than there were women, a lot of the men that chose to go on the pull at the bus stops outside high schools were extremely irresponsible.
Most of the older boyfriends that my peers had were interested in sex and little else, and would let my friends "fall in love with them" without having any respect for their feelings.
Also, the amount of stories you'd hear along the lines of "my 37 year old boyfriend says condoms ruin sex" was unbelievable.
(This is not a slur on men in general- this is literally what I experienced at the time, in this particular part of the world)

I do think though, that the other main factor is the change in attitude. As my mum, who is in her late 60s, always said, when she was a teenager, most of her friends got pregnant in their teens- they just had to get married as a result.
Back in the 50s, getting married seemed to wash away a lot of the societal pressure on young parents. Divorce was also less accepted, so these teenage marriages ended up lasting until today, where more pensioners are getting divorced than ever before.

Rates of teenage pregnancy really haven't changed that much. Its more a shift in how its perceived.
That's an interesting point of view, I've never thought of it that way! Though we can't access any interesting data from the 50's and 60's about this, I can't help but think it sounds right.

However, I'm pretty sure the average age has lowered since the 50's. Kinda hard to get married when you're 14! (I'm not telling that the average age really is 14, just a random figure)

A few reasons in my opinion.
Some people are too thick/lazy to finish school or find a job and think having a child is an easy scapegoat, because they think the government will throw money at them and all will be well.
Some of them think babies are oh so cute and good to show off and get attention, especially if their friends are all having kids and they crave some sort of attention too.
Some are so blindly in love with their partners they want to settle down straight away, even though having a baby can really test a relationship.
Some are just stupid and don't think twice about protection.
And some need to have some sort of control over someone, having a child is the best way to do that. They also want to use the excuse, "I'm a parent, so I know everything, I'm superior, and you know nothing about life."

Those are the sort of teenage parents I've met, I'm guessing they aren't the only ones.

OT: I'd say it is because they are idiots.
I don't know any intelligent girls who have gotten pregnant while too young.
Silly sexual people... should embrace the purity of the machine...

Right, serious question, why is the rate of pregnancy so high with Teenagers in the UK?

Why does the UK have such a high rate? 51 out of 1000 in the highest parts of britain.

Why? It baffles me how people can have sex without a condom, becoming a dad would scare the hell out of me, why doesnt it for these people?

What do you think is the reason for such high rates in he UK, or for that matter, any country?

Sorry if it's a silly thread but i'm just curiouss
it depends on how you were raised, your environment you grew up in, knowing what is right and wrong,

knowing how to resist temptation such as teenage sex, not getting influenced by media such movies, books(i'm looking at you twilight!), music, reality shows etc. can save you from teenage pregnancy.

Because sex is awesome?

I don't know, I live in Hampshire, which has the highest rate in the UK, and I've known lots of teenage mums, although a lot get abortions. I can't think of a good reason, it's not like we don't get educated or anything, and we get free condoms and Pills. It's odd...
Andover is the home of Hampshire teen pregnancy and thereofore the hoome of UK teen pregnancy. I should know, i went to college there.

Well, yeah I doubt there were so many 12-14 year olds getting pregnant back then, which is where I would say my other experiences came into play more, but the majority of teenage pregnancy figures take numbers from straight across the board- 13-19.

Its not really until you think about it though, that you realise how many grannies and their peers were pregnant and married at 16/17 years of age. Nowadays, they would be chalked up as another teen pregnancy statistic.

What are you complaining about? 51 out of 1000? Whoppdee-friggin-do. In America it's 86 out of 1000. We're number one! horray
Everyone knows it's better without protection! It's all about the thrill of living dangerously! B)

Well she's 18 now, but that's worse. Ironic thing is about 5 minutes after I posted that she phoned up and said she had just got a Tattoo :)

My mother is quite pissed off, and I'll get the aftermath. The tattoo is of some rum company. ???

'cos everybody is doing it. I lived in a homeless shelter for 3 years, most girls moved out due to pregnancy, some others had miscarriages, I think only 2 or 3 girls who lived there when I was there never got pregnant.

Kids also seem to be getting less attention and love from there parents, so to make up for it they want something to love. Theres the sex without a rubber and the girl doesn't want an abortion and has never heard of the morning after pill.

Personally, I think it's stupid to have a kid that young. Why waste the best years of your life, being solely responsible for another life? The next time you can have a life is when there 16 atleast, so if you conceive when your 16, you will be 32 before you have the option to get your kid to move out ... thats your teenage years through your twenties and to mid life stage! (average life span is 70 odd)

Theres also the money issue, you will be relying on others to support you, whether it be family or benefits and you will never have the cash to give it everything it wants.

Drugs and alcohol and stupidity, You see, the UK dose not exactly have a majority of smart teens (in face there is a large number of "chavs" and stoners) they don't exactly think of the consequences and assume that the chance of a child is small, but they are retards, not being racist towards the English cuz I actually like the English but they get drunk at very early ages and have unprotected sex

its because people get benefits for being an underage parent, seriously these people are the bottom-feeders of society. they live off benefits for their entire life and end up on £30k in benefits because they have like 12 kids
