Morality is one thing, but giving a woman 200 lashings and a prison sentence not only because she was violated, but also because the country she lives in runs themselves because some guy in a book told them to is another.

Now, I'm not one to bash the Muslim Faith as it is absurdly similar to the Christian Faith, but making laws based on the Kuran is just wrong, just as it is the Bible.

Try telling them that.
See how long you live before you tell them you don't believe in Allah.
Religious law is above anything else in Saudi Arabia.

Sorry about this but it is Qur'an not Kuran. Just thought I'd inform you. Also I agree that laws based on Faith/Holy Books is wrong, no matter how you spin it.

The comparisons between Christianity and the WBC are wrong. Christianity has only ever produced one theocratic government in recent history- the Papal States, and I'm fairly sure that these were nowhere near as barbarous as this.

Plus, nobody would let anyone close to the WBC actually determine the laws of a nation. The religious right do have a degree of power in America, but it's not completely overwhelmed them- it's just a sizeable minority opinion. And, one must note that not even the most extreme and insane members of the religious right would have the barbarity to propose anything like this.

I'm sorry, but there are sections of Islam that have been fucked up for centuaries now, and it's time someone did something about it.

The outrage! Conservative religion makes people suffer! Is any of this new? You know in some (most) branches of Islam a woman isn't allowed to address men in groups because she's unclean on account of having menstruation.

But I don't think getting your religion hate on solves anything. These people need education, not punches in the face. And if you put yourself in their position you might understand how hard it is for them to learn things that many of us consider basic knowledge. They live, generally, in a constant state of what we call religious ecstasy; the presence of God saturates every part of their daily life to a degree we in the secular world can hardly begin to comprehend. When they say "God is great" they mean that he is greater than everything else, that he is more important than the life of every man, woman and child in the world.

That's to say, please don't pass judgment on an entire people when you have no understanding of their situation.

Spelling doesn't really matter. Since the book was written and titled in 7th century Arabic, it could only be translated through interpretation. There's no "right" way to spell Qu'ran or Kuran.

i dont think the bible and Qur'an are ment to be taken literaly i mean its more than likely its just a set of guide lines you dont have to obey them strictly a society founded on strict religious law isn't very nice ie america and other places no gay marriges wtf! (im not gay fyi) i dont care whether the church's will alow it but legally its unconstitutional in america for the state to ignore gay marrige, religion and law should be kept seperate according to the constitution so legal marriges=win church marriges= what ever.

The news says this woman in Saudi Arabia was gang raped 14 times and, while the men were all trialed and convicted, she is now being sentenced to 200 lashes and 6 months in jail for participating in a sexual activity.

Strange, since I never knew being gang raped was defined as "participating."

Also, while it's not in this particular link, I read this woman also fell pregnant. Which is one the reasons she had her punishment increased from 100 lashes to 200.

Frankly, this sort of thing is atrocious, and shows the horrible outcomes of having a government so heavily influenced by religion. Not to mention extremist religious rulers.

Now don't be mistaken and assume I'm anti-thiest, I'm not. But I belief no government or court should be influenced by religious views and instead just do what is fair and just.

This is not just.
In saudi, women in this situation are usually stoned to death. I think the only reason she's getting off this lightly is that the men were tried and convicted. This is very rare, women are usually blamed for 'bringing it on themselves' by 'tempting' the men.
Really... who the fuck stones people to death anymore?

I bet the majority of Muslim women in Saudi Arabia actually supports this punishment. And the majority of Christian fundamentalist women will be totally shouting how they should follow the bible and totally submit to their men on the one hand; and totally disgusted by this punishment on the other hand.

Not that I'm anti religion. I'm just again religious people imposing their religion on the entire society, and brainwashing everybody.

I'm sorry but thats what you believe. Even though I agree with you thinking that you really shouldn't be held accountable saying that you "participated." But you have to look at it from the other side as well. I DO NOT AGREE WITH WHAT I'M ABOUT TO POST BUT I AM PLAYING DEVILS ADVOCATE. She COULD have taken the proper measures to defend herself after the first rape... or the second, or the third, or the forth. I have seen rape protection bra's, and other things that could have been used to protect herself.

I don't think that her getting lashes is o.k. or fair but I don't think you can do much now.

She was being gang raped, kinda hard then to ask for a pause so she could put on her anti-rape bra.

Anyway, this just shows that religious law is incredibly stupid, and that people who enforce religious law are retarted. Poor woman, but lets be glad she isn't stoned to death, although that sounds kinda...sick, but always look at the bright side of life huh?

Islam would disagree with you.

While Christianity is a life encompassing worldview, Islam is a world encompassing worldview. So, basically, as a Christian, I live by the beliefs and principles of Christianity. That EFFECTS every part of my world, like how I deal with situations and people, but the Bible doesn't talk about how to run a government.

For Islam, that worldview is something that doesn't just permeate your life as an individual, it has rules and laws and such for every aspect of life. From family ruling to government action to whatever. I mean, look at Hamas. Hamas isn't just some group of guys who hates Israel. It's a complete and total government system.

There's just nothing to do, these countries will not accept different opinions
You know, there is something we (better: our governments) could do:
Stop blowing money up their asses and place sanctions on them until they realize they are as dependend on our money as we are on their oil. Oh right, the Saudis are our friends because they have tons of oil in the sand.

But then, so does Iraq...

While its true that shariah law can end up being completely bullshit like in saudi, its also perfectly possible for it to work perfectly well - see all the other countries that we don't hear about because bad news is paying news
