As far as WWII settings go, I'd be intrigued by a game about the Siege of Tobruk. 240 days of desert warfare and siege, the first time the Blitzkrieg was actually brought to a complete stop. The Australian 9th Division was ordered to hold the town for eight weeks, they held it for five months until the German forces were driven off by Allied reinforcements.
To be fair, a large reason that blitzkrieg failed was because of the crippling lack of adequate support ironically caused from its great success in previous missions.

I would say, the only setting not used was the invasion of Alaska by Japan at the beginning of WW2... a lot of people don't even know that happened.

How about one told from the perspective of the Germans? It could make for a compelling story when done right. I mean, the average footsoldier was hardly evil, you didn't have much choice in joining the army if you were an able bodied young man.
I totally agree! I loved seeing the German perspective in some movies like Downfall and Das Boot. It would be quite a dramatic story arc if a game took place in the closing days of World War II, ending with the doomed defense of Berlin.

Japan ruthlessly invaded and massacred the Chinese.

How about we have a game about the Yugoslav wars?
This... Croatia set up one of the largest Nazi concentration camps during that period killing millions of Serbs/Jews/Gypsies. Although Serbia was crushed by the Nazis quickly, the guerrilla resistance that followed is very inspiring.

The Italian revolt against their own fascist leader would be interesting to retell.

Really there is a lot to tell... although much of it is extremely grim (which is I guess part of the appeal to consumers).

A decent African campaign. Could start out by fighting Italians then the Germans under Rommel.

Apparently the last calvery charge ever was by the Polish, towards a MG42 thats mowed them all down, in 1939. And alot or nasty shit happened in China as well. Hmm, what about the bombing of Dunkirk?
During the German Invasion of Poland in 1939, there is no evidence of Polish Cavalry mounting a brave but futile charge against German tanks using lances and sabres. This seems to have its origins in German propaganda efforts following the Charge at Krojanty in which a Polish cavalry brigade surprised German infantry in the open and charged with sabres until driven off by armoured cars. While Polish cavalry still carried the sabre for such opportunities, they were trained to fight as highly mobile, dismounted infantry and issued with light anti-tank weapons
YAY Someone has their facts right!! Polish Cavalry was actually used very effectively against the invading German infantry.

I would love to see a WWII story based around the Polish Kosciuszko Squadron which was attacked by the Germans the day the invasion began while they were training in Poland (they were actually all loaded with dummy rounds) they landed loaded with live ammo and went back up to fight, when Poland fell they re-based to France, were they took out more Germans then the French did, and then finally re-based to Britain where Winston Churchill credited them for the victory in the battles over London, and the coverup of their involvement in the war that Stalin demanded would make a excellent game (in my opinion anyway).

I'm going to go with the North Africa campaign. It was essentially the first victories for the allies in the war.

EDIT: Oh! And as to showing the German perspective in the war, El Alamain was essentially their first real retreat in the war, I think that would be great to show Rommel cursing Hitler and his staff for starting the war with Russia draining Germany's resources and generally fucking up royally as to the supply of Rommel's troops.

How about back in the U.S. where the women were making weapons. It would be like Cooking Mama, only with tanks!
THAT IS THE BEST SPINOFF POSSIBLE.
That has to be made, now. Emergency Wartime Production Mama, I like it.

Anyways, how about the New Zealanders? They were at risk due to proximity to Japanese possessions, and they made the best they could out of the pitiful equipment they had. They started with crap (Vickers Vildebeast, for instance, was a biplane torpedo bomber from the 20's), built crap (Ever heard of the Bob Semple tank?http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Semple_tank), and imported crap.
It would certainly be interesting...

Also: French Resistance (in france), and Russian sniping in stalingrad (in stalingrad).

I'm still waiting for a WWII game that features the Kokoda Track Campaign and Siege of Tobruk.

There also needs to be more battles with the Canadians and Polish, one of the reasons I actually liked Call of Duty 3.

I have a better question. Why no World War 1 games?
Because we'd have the same problem as we do with World War 2 games. Everything would be about the Somme or Trench Warfare in general. They'd probably never go into detail about the evolution of tanks, or the Armenian Genocide.
but if done well, they could. It could be truly fantastic, like the effect of COD1.
Also, we need some New Zealanders. The gallipoli campaign is gold for something along the lines of a COD game.
There was a recent article on Cracked about how New Zealand tried to build their own tanks in case the Japanese reached them during WWII. They looked pretty hilarious.

EDIT: a link would probably be appropriate. http://www.cracked.com/article_19233_the-6-most-ill-conceived-weapons-ever-built.html

Did Burma ever get the respect it deserves? Whenever I ask that question I usually get a question in reply: "There was fighting in Burm- is that a country?"

That and the Australian defense was ridiculously suicidal, they sat in the trenches even after some of them had been run over by passing tanks until they were ordered to fire on the tanks from behind. Although attacking tanks from behind was a common practice for anti-axis forces since the German tanks were 3 times more heavily armored in the front than other tanks, I doubt the German's expected soldiers to hide in dugouts and die from being crushed before they ever dared to show themselves.

I don't know about you guys, but I for one would love to see a game about the French Resistance. Or maybe focussing more of the Eastern Front beyond the Battle of Stalingrad.

How about Norway? The germans took controll of Norway and this was a bit of fighting for it, resulting in a loss for the allies. There is also the winter war which could actually make for a few very exciting missions if you add a little CoD exageration. What about a game that covers both fronts entirely from the German perspective? And doesnt end in Berlin! There are alot of possabilities.
A game, perhaps that has a multitude of endings depending on what you did? Where your choices in battle have a sort of butterfly effect on the outcome of the war. So you could fight for germany and bring glory to the reich, or participate in operation valkyrie or turn as a double agent and help win the war for the allies.

But still, Im with everyone who says WWI instead. I think trench warfare could be really harrowing if done right: sitting in a dirty hole while the enemy shells you for days, waiting for the command to go over the top, advancing over no mans land and then fighting hand to hand in a different dirty hole. It would all build up into this crushingly bleak oblivion where death is almost a relief. It would really make you think about what happened in WWI.

Why always WWII? Why not the US/Korean war or Vietnam? Desert Storm? There was supposed to be a Fallujah game as a way of honoring the soldiers and showing the rest of the world the crap they went through, but certain people put a stop to that.

Why not the the war of 1812? ....on second though, no.

My grandfather was born and raised in the northern Chinese province of Manchuria. He was in the military around the time the Japanese invaded and Emperor Puyi was their puppet. He also fought against Mao Tse-Tung before leaving China for Taiwan with the rest of the nationalists. As it's a large part of my cultural background and family history, I wouldn't mind such a game that would help put into perspective what my grandfather went through.

Hmmmmm......

Bolt action rifles and bayonets.

"Attach Bayonets, charge!"...... Mown down by amachine gun.

"Attach Bayonets, charge!"...... Step on a land mine.

"Attach Bayonets, ch...." Blown up by artillery.

"Attach Bayonets, charge." die from mustard gas.

Repeat ad nauseam until the invention of tanks and the arrival of the Americans.

Not sure there's enough dynamic there for a game. Maybe an interactive experience of some sort, but a game.....
