I say there should be focused linearity, but with a slight, if arbitrary, degree of freedom.
A map like the left hand side one with a minimap and objective arrow in-game

It's the perfect solution, since they're saying "Go explore, maybe you'll find a cool weapon or hidden route or something, but if you want the on-rails or get lost, we've got you covered!"

He may very well have the right to a refund, it all depends on what consumer rights are like in the country he lives in.
It would take a lot for me to return a game on the grounds that it was unsatisfactory (one of my statutory consumer rights)
Finishing the game shouldn't necessarily prevent you from returning it either, especially if length of the game is something that factored into returning it.

Its pretty bad, I'll agree, but if I like the style...the perverted humor, it appeals to me.

The thing with this game, is thats its trying to be too much. It plays like Halo (Halo 1), with worse controls, and some carry over mechanics from Duke 3D. Its also incredibly annoying at times. The queen fight? Its not HARD, its not annoying as hell because it takes forever, and a twist of bad luck or bad aim and BOOM...you start alllll over.

Its really a LOT like Duke 3D, just with updated graphics (that are 6 years out of date).

The 2 weapons at a time idea, was bad.
The regen system, is bad. Its also too damn slow.
The controls are really bad

But, its still Duke Nukem, and I want another one, a REAL modern day Duke, and if this game does well enough, we could see it in a year or two.

I may have been unclear here, I meant the Deus Ex beta. omgomgomgomg
In that case, no.

However, I have seen gameplay footage of the E3 demo, and while the game looks interesting, like I said before, I refuse to support anything that is connected to Square Enix. And, if I find out the game is good, I will buy it used.
May I ask why you refuse to buy anything connected to Square Enix?

You play a game, finish it, then want your money back because you didn't like it. Congrats on being part of the reason why retail outlets no longer do refunds or exchanges on games & movies!
So if you bought a pie, and the pie was terrible, you wouldn't expect your money back?
Depends. Typically no, you can't have a refund because you didn't like it. If it had mold or was otherwise defective you can have another pie or maybe a store credit, but no refund.

Some places do give refunds and kudos to them for that, but I've long since gotten used to the idea that if I don't want to get screwed on a bad game, don't buy it right at release. Wait 3-6 months and the price will often times drop by like 50% (new). Unless you are someone like NCSOFT (guild wars) in that the purchase price IS the MMO price, so it never goes on sale.

This. How else do we reward/punish for good/bad games after we purchase other than to hit their hip pocket?

I only hope that steam can get a refund from the developers for your purchase...

Don't get me wrong - I had fun with Duke Nukem Forever. Did I have eighty bucks of fun? No.

My worthless opinion: I believe the fourteen year development time, constant changes and the lunatic in charge of the whole mess constantly trying to make the game like the other big sellers - presumably in pursuit of the perfect game - is the reason behind the game's utter failure.

Even by standards of today's games, it's lame. What irks me the most is the rooms full of enemies, and you can only advance by killing each wave. As if the gates are fueled by alien souls, and you have to feed it so many before it opens for you. Boring.

So, I contacted Steam Support and they said yes to my refund. I advise those of you who tragically miss their eighty bucks to do the same.

Just be as polite and respectful as you can. Personally I'm going to use this to buy Portal2, which I should have done a long, long time ago.
Tell me how you had fun? Because I didn't.
You could say this for pretty much anything.
Fun is a subjective thing. It's like asking how people thought Event Horizon was a good movie. Sometimes they have no answer, it just was to them.

You can't go in expecting 14+ years of greatness. while going through several development cycles the best you can hope for is a nostalgic, self-aware, witty game. and I feel that for the most part it delivers on that.
I agreeee. I mean besides the gameplay being out of date, the graphics were not bad and it was cheesy as hell fun. Kinda brought me back to when I was 12.

It was good because it was pretty origional and creepy. Silent Hill in spacceeeee kindaway. Good actors, good script and creepy concept.

Isn't that one of the early Doom levels? I remember that maze in the right hand corner, I think.

God, Doom was awesome. More shooters need to emphasise exploration.
Yeah I think it looks like Doom level 2 if I'm not mistaken. Some shooters still emphasize exploration. I think Wolfenstein did. It was kind of a hybrid of the two above designs. Like others I'm looking foward to Rage and the next Dues Ex (although I didn't know Ionstorm wasn't making it and square was.)

Thanks for posting this, it makes a great point, also now that I've actually played it, Duke Nuke Em' seems fine. The graphics aren't crap, there seem to be lots of gameplay modes (FPS (duh), platforming, Driving an RC car, playing pinball, slots, using a giant cannon on the top of a building to fight a mothership etc.) It does feel a bit like it was made for it's fans but that's fine with me, that's just what my friend is, an oldschool Duke fan and he thinks it's great. (Still bemoans the lack of the Mighty Boot tho') I also haven't run into anything really gross yet, like was in the review, but we just started it today. I think it's fun and definitely different scenery for a shooter. Hope you like "Duke themed" levels!

Your quoting skills amaze me!

But my point still stands, just replace Event Horizon with anything, it's the first thing that I though of.
