This may come across as hypocritical coming from the guy that hosts The Escapist's resident Pokemon-themed game, but I'm always a little weary whenever a new batch of Pokemon are announced. The designs are getting repetitive and boring, sometimes incredibly idiotic (furniture Pokemon?!), they've already adapated the same animals several times, and all I can think of is "there goes 100 more reasons why we will never catch them all". Ken Sugimori can and will rotoscope the same cutesy rodents and threatening reptiles for the rest of his life, and people will buy them like it's novelty.
It's like Sugimori can't win.

His team is either criticized for trying to hard by basing Pokemon off of mythological creatures and more obscure types of animals, or he is criticized for basing Pokemon once again on basic animals.

I mean...what do you want from them?
They are damned either way so perhaps them just making whatever looks good works for them the best instead of appealing to one or the other spectrum of complaints.
I know there are only so many animals in the world but come on, there're about 650 Pokemon and a good hundred of those alone are some kind of rat. Rather than do a little research and look up some new interesting species (there're only 1.8 MILLION kinds of insects, with 20,000 NEW species discovered every year), or simply get a little creative, he keeps rehashing old models, palette-swapping, refloating the same concepts over and over and over again. And when he does come up with something new it looks like this:

Come the fuck on, Ken.
Some British team member (James Turner, I think) came up with that one because it's based off a nice dessert over there. Lay off Ken unless he actually designed the thing you're criticizing.

There needs to be some shark pokemon. I can only remember seeing one in all the games I've played. And maybe some squid or deep sea fish, there aren't very many of those in the games. Just some ideas so they don't have to do anymore ice cream cones or trash bags or anything like that.

I'm up for it, especially if they're not just treated like your average Pokemon, which it seems like they aren't.
I heard some cool other stuff too but I'm just going to go get my facts straight before I post 'em

Edit 1: It seems like these forms are battle exclusive so it will be an in battle transformation and leaving battle will reset it.

Plus It's already spawned this,

Those new forms look so cool!

I hope some more Pokémon get this treatment. My excitement for these games continues to rise.

Very interesting, but I feel like it isn't necessary to have "mega" evolutions. It's cool and all especially if all the starters get a megalution, I would love to see Serperior become a grass/dragon considering we still don't have that typing yet. I wouldn't be surprised if Charizard would become a fire/dragon, but then that would make Reshiram lose a bit of its edge as the only fire/dragon, and we certainly cannot have that. (cracks knuckles)

EDIT: Replied to the wrong person with the first half.

Also way to go. You- like everyone else point out 5 CRAPPY POKEMON out of a lot of 100 and call it a day.

Might I remind you that there is a Pokemon based on the Atlus moth?

There is another Pokemon based on dotaku- a praying bell for Japanese of old times.

Another one is based on the concept of ghosts remembering their past human lives, so on and so forth.

But you know, keep showing Trubbish and Vanillux and making them the face of the new Pokemon for anyone to ignorant or lazy to actually look up what your talking about.
I mean seriously here.
Do not act like if you were tasked with having to make up 100+ Pokemon you wouldn't come up with a mouse Pokemon, or a bunny Pokemon. Don't come and tell me that.
Because even in other monster based games they do stuff like this and they have an even SMALLER rooster than Pokemon does.

I'm actually quite glad for this.

Reason being is because since Black and White raised the power bar with the likes of Darmanitan and Haxorus, many 1st 2nd and 3rd gen Pokemon have been put to the wayside in terms of competitive battling. Even Mewtwo has become underused due to the introduction of Darkrai.
Hopefully with this Mega Stone. Many Pokemon that neither benefitted from recent evolutions or dream world abilities will finally find themselves being used again.
Since Black and White raised the power bar? What the fuck are you talking about. There has always been powerful Pokemon in every gen. Black and White raised nothing, there just powerful pokes in there like every other gen. What Pokemon have been tossed to wayside exactly. You give me the name of a poke that used to be in OU, yet is now in NU because of black and white. Tons of people that still use Mewtwo, it has nothing to do with Darkrai. Where did you get this info? I want an exact source.
Info?
Christ, are you kidding me?
I see it all the time on Pokemon Battle Revolution. When a Mewtwo is up against a Darkrai, the Pokemon is garunteed to get taken out with it's infamous sleep move and a dark pulse attack.

Also Darmanitan is overpowered. It has immense attack power, with a pretty average speed for something with that much of a base attack stat.

I can't really tell you the last time I saw a Dragonite on Wifi, but I can tell you how many times I've seen someone use a Haxorus with the Dragon Dance, Outrage combo.
Milotics used to be a wall in Pokemon. Now it's replaced with Reuniclus.

Dragonite has just enough stats to keep it in OU. However between the two pics most would go for a Haxorus over Dragonite because of it's pure dragon type.

In fact they can't really BE in NU because they are too powerful for NU Pokemon anyway.

Mega form? It sound like they have gone Digimon on us! I'm not saying it's a bad thing but it is unexpected.
I am totally okay with that.

Also Blaziken will be more badass? sure!
although I wouldn't mind new names other than MegaBlaziken. But whatever.
You know now I think about it, dear god imagine what if Magikarp or Gyaradis get a mega form (where's your god now)? Obviously not all of the Pokemons will get a mega form but still.

Also is it just it just me or does the mega form just make most of the Pokemon more wavy looking (wavy hair, fur or limb thing for Mawile case). Only Mewtwo doesn't have a wavey look to his mega form.

First of all, Mewtwo outspeeds Darkrai and can one shot him with aura sphere. Pokemon Battle Revolution came out before the Black and White metagame. That's what we are focusing on. Not 4th gen. Second of all, Dragonite has Multiscale, which makes him far more valuable than Haxorus. In fact, I verse alot more teams that use Dragonite over Haxorus because of Multiscale and a better movepool. Darmanitan has a ton of counters, everybody knows that he is usually running a choice scarf set.

Also Darmanitan is overpowered. It has immense attack power, with a pretty average speed for something with that much of a base attack stat.

It's a good idea, really. Alot of cool pokemon aren't really strong enough to use, and this is an oppurtunity to give them much needed upgrades.

However, I'm not too big on the ones they've revealed. I mean, Lucario, Blaziken, and GODDAMN MEWTWO don't really need stronger forms. Also, why is Mega Mewtwo smaller?

I thought that too, and I'm really unsure whether I like it or not. They look 'cool', I guess, but without knowing what the actual difference is between them and their preevolution it just looks like that's all they're there for. Hopefully it's some worthwhile new gameplay mechanic.

And that Dedenne mouse looks too much like Raichu for me to like it. I was loving the other revealed pokemon because they were entirely new creations, but this new lot hasn't piqued my interest. Still excited though.

Heh. The mega Pokemon plays a scenario in my mind.

"We have to make epic Pokemon evolutions based off of previous Pokemon."
"Shit, the Pokemon you want us to make more epic are already too epic looking, what should we do?"
"Try adding flowing hairs and making their claws look huge!"

A little change in form or silhoutte would be good enough, but Pokemon like the Ampharos and Mawile evolved forms look like they barely changed anything to them.

I have to admit out of all the news I've heard about this gen, this one actually gives me some pause.

I'm not against giving older pokemon new evolutions. And on Absol and Mawhile I agree their base forms were a little underpowered in small ways that made it hard to take them to the end game or use competitively.

But Blaziken? Ampharos? Lucario? They were already substantially powerful, I don't know why the devs thought they would need new evolutions when there are pokemon like dunsparce or sableye which could use a competitive boost.

Also the name rubs me wrong. It just doesn't sound like a proper evolution when all you're doing is adding Mega to the name. That said I do adore absol and mawhile's designs and will probably try and use both.

On the one hand, it's a good chance for some useless Pokemon to get an evolution. Look at that fucking Mawile. That excites me personally because I used a Mawile in my proper Ruby team. Ampharos looks ridiculous, like they're just towing around a cloud, but you take the good with the bad I suppose.

On the other hand, it's a cheap way of getting out of designing new Pokemon (maybe that's for the best, don't want some kind of...pillow Pokemon), and if it's going to be connected to events, it can go fuck itself. I've become more resistant to events ever since I started playing, and now I wish they'd just cut that shit out. Put the fucking Pokemon in the fucking Pokemon game you bastards.

What I'd like to see this be is when a Pokemon becomes Mega, they get better stat growth, but lose something, like for example their supereffective attacks have less of a multiplier and opponent's not-very-effective attacks do more damage, or they can't learn any more moves. Because I don't know what they intend to do with Blaziken that doesn't break the game, considering that'd be basically a fourth evolution.

I believe the word 'Mega' is either a placeholder for the moment or another case of the Japanese names for their stuff usually not carrying over verbatim to the other language versions e.g. Ness was the beta place holder for the name of Lapras in the case of the former, or Blacky = Umbreon in the English localization in the case of the latter.

EDIT: Guess not. I'm fine with it since they're not actually evolving, just changing form in battle by equipping a hold item, like Shaymin or Giratina's different forms.
