*Update*

The 'box came back last night from repairs - it's now twice as loud and sounds like an Apple II E booting up a floppy disk when it has to think, but at least it works. . .? Worth a hundred bucks? Nope. Instructions on how you can help fight the powers at microsoft can be found in this post here:

**********************************

Two nights ago i sat down to play Fallout 3 and my box up and died. I was cracking a safe and the screen went all red and white - a security feature i hadn't encountered before? Nope. The game froze and, upon rebooting, there was the infamous E74 error.

Now i have to fork over 100 bucks and change, plus cover shipping costs, plus lose the box for a couple of weeks while it gets repaired, because i was just over a month out of warranty (internet research shows that this error most frequently occurs in the first few weeks after warranty expiration). Microsoft CLEARLY knows about this issue - on my third call to customer service, i asked the guy how often they get calls about the E74.

"A lot," he answered. "I don't know why they don't cover that under the three year deal."

Should Microsoft be expected to pick up the costs for this themselves, as they are well aware of the faulty hardware issue but have (A) done nothing to correct it and (B) expect a ridiculous amount of money for something that takes a knowledgeable techie 2 hours to fix? How many of you have suffered the indignity of the E74? Anybody want to storm the gates of the Microsoft head office and demand our money back? Or will Gates' evil minions destroy me before i can even post this?

Share your thoughts.

My Xbox 360 hurked once, so I sent it in. When it happened a year later a second time, I sent it in but I also bought a PS3. At least now the next time my 360 shits the bed, I'll be okay for games. Also: I now never buy multiplatform releases for the 360 and always for the PS3 -- with the exception of GTA IV and Fallout 3, of course, because of exclusive DLC. So now my 360 only plays 360 exclusives, aside from those two games.

If you have the money, I recommend it.

This is exactly the error I got. It's a problem with the plastic clips holding the graphics chip in place. Expect it to come back a month later and make twice as much noise when you get it back. Oh, and yeah it happened literally a week after my warranty expired, yeah I had to fork over $100, and no I have not used it nearly at all after that. I use my PC now.

Something similar happened to me I got a red segment in the lower right corner of the ring, but luckily I found out I had just over-heated the USB port while charging my wireless controller, almost gave me a heart attack when I saw that red light flashing, I had just bought the 360 a couple months ago and I was pretty sure the 90 day factory warranty had expired.

That what you get for realising the system so quick just to gain market share before competition. This is the the next time Microsoft shows the middle finger to its customers along with red rings and the failure of HD-DVD add on.( 300,000 people were denied returns when the world embraced the blu-ray as the way to go.) But then again Microsoft is evil so you would expect even more evil doings from them.

Hm...

If only you had gotten the RROD, your problem would be solved, because then they'd be obligated to cover it under the extended warranty.

On a completely unrelated note, RROD is usually caused by running the system too hot for awhile. Maybe a fan broke or something. Maybe you accidentally blocked every intake and covered it with electric blankets and then turned it on. Who knows? That crazy Red Ring...

Shame about your error. If only it had been the Red Ring, right?

You'd think they'd either have been taken to court on it or have fixed it by now...

Does the XBox 360 Elite have any of these issues? Can always hope...

Happened to my Brothers Xbox Premium a month back. Same thing as you, not long out of warranty and stupid amount of money to fix.

So he bought an arcade version as it worked out cheaper and we are gonna try to fix the old one ourselves.

Also am I the only one who feels so insulted by the terrible build quality of the 360? All my old consoles still work fine and some of them are ancient, its a fucking disgrace and really gets to me.

Hell, my old NES still works - you gotta blow in the cartridges, but we've been doing that for 20 years now.

What I got was even more annoying- only two red lights instead of the RROD, something which isn't covered by my year-long warranty and has resulted in me spending £80 on getting it repaired. Thanks Microsoft, imperial cockshafts that you are...

This does strike me as being ridiculous though: why, when the console is plagued with hardware problems which are similar to, but not quite the same, as the RROD not included in the extended warranty? I guess it's because of the extended media coverage for the RROD but the fact that they aren't supporting their customers who have already spent close to £200 on their machines is shockingly poor.

So yeah, fuck Microsoft.

How is it that Microsoft can spend over a billion dollars building and developing the thing and yet it still has horrible problems?
