nah, with this sort of thing, there wont be some massive war: we'll just be replaced, cell by improved cell. honestly, I think we'll still be us, just better.

How is this synthetic? All they're doing is putting DNA inside a cell that already exists. Hell, I've done this at least 3 times in my high school genetics class THIS YEAR (as in, jan to may semester).
You need to learn to read..

"The researchers constructed a bacterium's "genetic software" and transplanted it into a host cell. The resulting microbe then looked and behaved like the species "dictated" by the synthetic DNA"
Yeah... What's different from manipulating plasmids and transplanting those? Or removing entire nuclei?

Well at least when I'm 70(20 now) hiding in a cave(Or wherever) with the few remnants of society and humanity waiting for the monstrosities that come to end us I can at least say, I saw the very start of all of this. Or it could just be a good thing, hahaha. No, no were screwed. Okay so what do you think will kill us all first? Terminator style robots which are becoming more and more into focus. Zombie or sythentic robot/humans that find us to be inferior. Really horror movies are seeming more and more likely to be real and Its not making me all that happy...
They need to hurry up if they want robots to finish us off before stuff like this will.

The beginning of the end?

Since super robots are the only conceivable outcome of this.
they'll just have a nice bearded man transport thier new electricity creating bacteria across town and BAM! psychic trash robots.

OT:This is a big deal.Come on people! Why aren't they responding to this news?
It may have something to do with there already being a thread about this in the Religion & Politics section :p

But, people seem to be posting now.
Bleh,I never look in that section.
You're not the only one.

It's always the same few people posting in that section. Cuddly Tomato, Amnestic, Skeleon, and me.
i'm there too....

But yes, it does get boring without some fresh fish from time to time. Diverse views are too rare to make that section even interesting.

OT: FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK YEAH!

I want my pet dragon now. its totally possible to create a hexapod lizard with emerald green scales, horns, and wings for its central limbs. WANT. NOW.
Oh my god,I just realized. We know the entire DNA for certain dinosaurs for a while now, this can happen!

The same problem with GM food could happen with this, contaminating natural elements and possibly not really offering that much other than a patent for a company to slap on genes.

*Sigh*
I'd like to not be cynical about this, but I can't help it.

Well one step closer to being replaced by something better.
I don't really see what the big fuss is about the onlt difference between this cell and a "normal" one is that a computer build it's dna rather then "nature".
Just another case of science wasting money on useless shit no one needs or cares about.
Yay for playing god I guess.
Yeah, because artificially building living organisms is so fucking easy. You do realise that this technology could lead to some serious scientific advancements, like the eradication of genetic defects, the artificial development of biofuel, the creation of vaccines and the disposal of carbon dioxide? There's likely a ton of other stuff possible too. Stop and think for a second, and you'll realise that all that "wasted money" you ***** about has improved your life rediculously.
To what end ?
What point is there to moving forward when you don't know what you're moving towards ?
Perverting the natural order of the world for no reason other then to perpetuate this meaningless endevour, hoping that in the end we'll have some justification for our actions ?
Blindly stumbling along without any foresight doesn't help anyone.
Who knows, maybe some other race created us in a similar way and launched us into space.
