I read about this yesterday, then quite topically noticed that The Tall Man was on TV so I watched that in the spirit of Slenderdude: not a half bad film mind you.

As for the incident itself I will say: fucking children, fucking parents, fucking apparent unfettered internet access.

So they went to kill their friend so it would summon Slender Man to come molest them and make them disappear forever?

It doesn't really sound like they thought that plan through. Why would you want to invoke Slender Man?
This. As far as I can tell, Slenderman is much like Bloody Mary, Midnight Man or The Bath Game. If you invoke/seek it, you usually die and there's no reward for surviving your encounter. It's not like a ritualistic mirror-breaking, or invoking the Curse of Macbeth in a theater, where your dangerous encounters leave you with good fortune if you escape... o__O

Anyways, I'm really glad the victim survived. She's got to be traumatized. ;___;

Yes and no, it depends on the version. For example in "Marble Hornets" Slenderman is portrayed as having people working with him. That said, you are correct that as a general rule he falls under the category of "a very bad thing" *ESPECIALLY* for children as he was intentionally designed as being a boogieman that preys on children.

At any rate I did a quick check on the site they were supposedly using, and here is their Slenderman section and links to the stories involving him on their site (there might be more, but I'm guessing this is supposed to be all of them). It gives a good run down, and has a lot of the classic pictures and videos as well.

http://creepypasta.wikia.com/wiki/The_Slender_Man

In breezing through this I didn't find anything about summoning or controlling Slenderman in any kind of a ritual that resembles this. I also see no real evidence that the guy running the site is claiming to actually be Slenderman.

One thing that occurs to me is that if someone did approach the girls and claim he was Slenderman and he wanted them to do this, and helped them plan the attack, that might be a good place to start. The authorities should be looking into their communications as we speak though, I'd imagine we'll never get the full details, especially with minors involved. That said it does seem likely that an adult is going to be charged here as well since it was apparently not just about the stories, but their belief that they were actually dealing with Slendy running the site.

So he's some sort of modern day Bigfoot... who murders people?

If you go to the creepypasta website there is a statement on the front page in relation to this case and the media attention creepypasta has got from it.
Eh, sort of, only that some people actually believe in bigfoot.

He was basically created in (I think it was) the SomethingAwful forum when they a thread about creating your own fictional monster or something, and a user found/altered several photographs so that it would appear slenderman was in them all from different timeperiods. People thought this is pretty cool for some reason, and it latched on.

I do think the term "creepypasta" is weird thought, isn't it just a ghost story? Or is the difference that Ghost stories are retold, while creepypasta is copypasted? Or what?
Nowadays it's just a creepy story on the internet. Originally it came from people trying to start urban legends, where they would show up on some site and "tell everyone the truth" anonymously like you might expect someone to do in a horror movie after a horrible experience. Some of these stories were circulated around like chain letters and such and became a thing, and of course more and more people did I or got involved. The name is sort of a throwback to the origins of creepy stuff on the internet.

Some of the stuff is totally bogus, other stuff (the best stuff) has a grain of truth to it, probably by people who were inspired by actual events and simply added a fantastic motivation to them. A lot of it can't be proven either way, and some can become bona-fide urban legends, and like a lot of such stuff it spawns it's own area of conspiracy theories, both on specific stories, and on the whole genera itself, especially when combined with other trends as I pointed out.

Among the most "famous" creepypastas are things like the "Tails Doll" which could be brought up in one of the Sonic racing games and was totally creepy. There was a rumor for a while that if you used it, bad things could happen to you IRL. Then of course there is "Smiledog" which is basically a pic of an evil looking dog with a toothy grin photo shopped onto it, and a guys hand visible as if the photographer messed up somewhat in taking the pic. Basically if you see the "true" Smiledog picture it gets into your head and drives you insane in your dreams until you spread the photo to other people where the same thing happens, however once you pass it on you tend to die or disappear (though your misery presumably ends). There have been scads of photos fitting that description put all over the internet as part of the "joke", the basic gist of it is that if you see one and nothing happens it just means you didn't see the real ones. Personally if I had skill at shopping I always kind of wanted to make a picture of Slenderman taking Smiledog for a walk. Then of course you have "Abandoned By Disney" which talks about the ruins of one of their alleged parks they had to abandon and how it's haunted. A sequel of sorts to it however talks about the concept of "Gascots" which are mascots with gas mask features as part of the mascot head, and where you can see condensation inside the eye lenses if you look closely. Allegedly they roam Disneyland (I think it was) periodically, and don't actually do much. The background to them is that during the Atomic Warfare hysteria decades ago Disney built bomb shelters (like most people did), but due to not wanting to frighten children if an emergency happened they had special gas masks made in the form of iconic Disney characters. The idea being that if there was an emergency the siren would go off, the staff would distribute the less scary masks which would hopefully not frighten the children, and everyone would be lead into the prepared shelters. Not in of itself all that crazy, however allegedly there was a "false alarm" through the park (now covered up) where everyone who went into the shelters apparently disappeared, and a later attempt to look inside revealed weird voices and supernatural cold and darkness. Allegedly Disney covered up the incident and buried the shelter under tons of concrete, but ever since you occasionally see these Gascots wandering around in the crowds and then vanishing.... I'm rambling but all of these are "classics" that have gotten some following and the occasional person (Conspiracy Theorist) apparently taking them fairly seriously.... albeit to my knowledge nobody has ever been confirmed killed by a looking into/following a creepypasta until now... and you know, wierdos being weird, people have doubtlessly gone to Disney wearing "Gascot" costumes to be funny and amuse the occasional person who gets the joke and so on (just as many people have made Smiledog pics) but that's all fairly harmless.

what was their next plan? pull off a bank heist to summon pedobear?
I think they got their wires crossed. Clearly they were taking the wrong action to summon the wrong internet meme.

I'm pretty sure sticking something in a 12 year old girl 19 times *is* how you summon pedobear, however. I'm not sure that the something in question is a knife though...

Why do I suspect that these girls are deliberately trying to look as if the "video games" or the "internet" made them do it so they can either get away with it, or have a reduced sentenced because "video games are to blame". Using a modern scape goat to justify a crime.
At that age I think that you already have a clear understanding of right and wrong...

What..? I don't remember being that stupid when i was twelve. These girls must have some mental issues or their lawyer made up some bullshit story to shift the blame on something else.

Except their logic wasn't " let's murder this girl", but " let's summon slenderman". Their intent wasn't to murder somebody. If they thought the needed to throw daisies at someone, that's what they would hav done. They were using children logic ( where they most likely thought no one would get hurt , let alone die).

It was an act of cruelty, and should be punished, but they were just dumb kids.
Doesn't matter if they would have thrown daisies at someone if they thought that would work too. The fact is that they actually went and stabbed someone in order to achieve something totally ludicrous. I mean i'm sure million of kids would like to have a day off from school and know that if they pushed their teacher down the stairs they'd get it, yet they don't do it. These insane kids are the kind of kids who would actually do it.

Ok, if that statement that one girl had "visions" and dreams about Slenderman and wanted to be his "helper" are true, and that statement about the other girl being afraid that Slender would come for her family is true... I think I have a VERY good idea what went on.

Psycho girl wants to be a slender-helper...thing because the voices in her head tell her to.
Psycho girl decides/dreams up that she needs to kill someone to do it, and realizes she needs help to do it.
She convinces her impressionable friend that slender is real and that he'll come for her family, and uses this to pressure her friend into helping (kinda blackmail).

Soo...If that's the case, both girls need to go to a mental institution.

The girl with no remorse needs to be kept there for study and observation for the rest of her life.
The girl that was scared/blackmailed into helping needs to go there to be "deprogrammed" and get help getting over this, because she's been dragged into something horrible and will be scarred for life.

What the fuck is wrong with them?

*pauses*

And what the fuck is wrong with their parents?
Definitely. There HAS to have been SOME kind of sign their daughter was fuckign nuts, and that the other girl was scared shitless and possibly being blackmailed.

...fuckin' retards. Seriously. In this day and age, with the Internet as well known as it is, how can ANYONE (Especially twelve year olds) think anything online is even true anymore? And even if you do...Slenderman? Seriously?

I'm a bit confused.

So is Slender Man more than just the simple horror game where you collect pages in a wood?

Is there some sort of ongoing fake-blog or something? Seems to be what this is suggesting. I've not heard of this before.
Slender Man was found in an old 1950s-60s photo. Possibly doctored. It became a huge thing on 4chan, and it got its own meme. It then got made into multiple video games because "memes r cool."

People started writing fanfiction and posted them on creepypasta for internet fame. These girls read it, and they thought it was real.
It was fake. It was also on Something Awful forums. I don't think it did much/well on 4chan. It became a bit of an internet meme and was then truly popularized by the game.

Am I the only one who's awed at the fact she survived 19 stab wounds?
History tells us it takes 23 times to kill someone.

OT: I categorize people who do this kind of stuff in the same way I categorize those who commit mass suicide over doomsday predictions (see 2012) or other fictional stories... Batshit insane stupid.

Sorry to say that I'm not even surprised by this stuff anymore. Maybe the internet is starting to rub off on me beacause this kind of stuff seems to roll off my mind much easier than it used to.

he's bascially a monster in our popculture along side werewolves, zombies and vampires

the difference is unlike drawing from hundreds of years of myths folklore and films he was "created" in a shorter amount of time (I'm assuming) by the power of the internet, with lots of people adding to the "slenderman mythos"
In a way the fact that it was created and fleshed out in such a short time is the reason Slendy is so much more scary to the uninitiated. Vampires and werewolves have been deconstructed and painted into all the colors of the rainbow by fiction and the media, while Slendy and many of the other creepypasta creations are new and have carefully and lovingly crafted mythologies associated with them that can easily fool a person who lacks critical thinking, like a young kid or a YE creationist (though the latter would probably call them demons or something).
