Seriously? Someone whining, when the opposing team does better by saying "it was luck!" It is so annoying...
It was luck - the USA had one decent shot all game (that Green tipped onto the post because he was out of position) and never really looked like scoring. Their goal was a fluke, sheer luck - something that happens once in a keepers career(if you're not David "calamity" James).

It's pretty annoying the American press can't see that because from a neutral perspective it's true - it was luck and poor shooting from the English strikers that lead to the tie, not an amazing performance from the US team...

I was pretty pissed when that happened, I was anticipating that England would obliterate them. Ah well it was still a good match.
I thought it was hilarious. I can't stand football, yet two of my house mates adore it. They had an entire party over watching the game, so I got to see their look of dispair as it all went tits up.

Hold up... so your team not winning is something to celebrate?. You didn't win, you tied. Some thing that I feel ashamed about to be quite honest, not jumping with joy. England was playing embarrassingly bad and the US played surprisingly good and you only fluked a goal... so your celebrating.

No matter which way you put it, you fluked it and you still didn't win... so why are you celebrating?. Green had the ball, then dropped it, like a pillock, then it rolled in. Now if Green would had kept hold of the ball, you wouldn't have even been in this.
I do find it some what hilarious that American fans are celebrating simply because they didn't lose.

The England V USA match is something every Brit assumed we'd win with ease. And aside from that tragedy of a mistake, fair play to you, your defence was solid as hell.
Not really. America have a great little team, they beat Spain and almost Brazil in the Confederations Cup last year. I guess a lot of people who don't know all that much about football all crawl out of the woodwork for the World Cup which is understandable since it's everywhere. This lead to people expecting us to win what was a tough draw. The other two teams in Englands group are total gash though.
I wouldn't say the US defence were that great really, England had most of the ball but didn't place their shots, they would have won handily if Zamora was playing instead of Heskey.
Every person I know who loves and knows their football made that assumption it seems, and underestimated them along with everyone else. Regardless, if we kept that mistake of a goal out, sure they could have still scored as they are a good team, but 1-0 seemed likely, especially considering the way both sides played in the second half. England shouldn't have gotten so lax after they scored, but still.

And I still don't understand why Defoe wasn't on instead of Heskey, and Crouch earlier than he got on. It made no sense in a 1-1 situation of that calibre.

If Seaman was on, that goal wouldn't have gone past. He'd had deflected it with that manly ponytail and moustache. I do agree Crouch should have been on at the beginning. I though he was going to be... I thought the line up was going to be Crouch and Rooney for striking. Too little too late putting him on near the end of the second half.

Honestly I don't understand soccer (football for you annoying non Americans =P) you play one and a half hours for 1 point? Talk about a snooze fest. That's just my opinion.
Really? I see the beauty in the attempts to get the goal, they do it skillfully and more entertaining then other sports. I mean its better then watching red necks take left turns for a couple hours. Also I don't see why Basketball isn't just soccer just with your hands instead, same with hockey. Also there's American Football which is mostly putting the wait in not actually doing anything but waiting for them to do something.

Don't know really, I'm assuming England will prevail. I actually watched Doctor Who instead... it was a good episode...
Even though the coverage of the match was after Dr. Who?

OT: Bad to watch =/ Didn't expect the US team to do so well! Not like I know why I thought that either... Robert Green screwed up, but we all just have to move on from that. I reckon England if England can pick it up a bit, we'll push through to the semis and lose it there. Still, it'll be interesting to see how the Americans do now.

i love the coverage on ITV, where they interviewed an American fan who had gone to South Africa to watch USA, yet he could only name 3 people on the USA first team.

maybe he should have stayed at home and watched Handegg.
At least "handegg" doesn't end in a tie during a championship tournament...

Hellyeah the US tied England and as an American I am pumped. Granted the goal was a major fluke, but the US played well enough. .
The Americans played really well. They were a tight unit and they all knew thier places, holding the English down for the whole game and with a mostly tight defence.

England were as usual, much less than the sum of thier parts. A shoddy performance from players who are supposed to be some of the best in the world.

When did a draw automatically mean america wins?
Because it is a win for America. Football (soccor) in America is a underrated sport and teams worldwide have never taken the USA team seriously. Its a very David vs Goliath type story, and even though USA didn't win in the traditional sense, they were able to play a good match against a heavily favored opponent. And in that sense, it is a win.

That being said, yes, the US goal was pretty damn lucky. Both teams played pretty horribly during the middle of the match. The last 20 mins were incredible and both teams made great attacks.

Howard played one heck of a game. Especially in the final drives. He picked up for our defensive mistakes immensely.

I was watchin' a recap of the Mets.
ouch a Mets fan...Go Yankees!
Go Red Sox!

I'm not even American, it's just that me and my brother saw a baseball game on the TV when we visited (White vs Red sox). I decided to side with Red on a whim, and he sided with White

Now I guess I just support them in a weirdly detached way

OT: Meh, us English (not me, not a football guy) deserved to tie, because we were all pumped up on our "Americans can't win in sports that other countries play", citing Baseball, American Football and, to a lesser extent, Ice Hockey as evidence.

Whilst I think that's arrogant coming from England, I'd have to side with them in the fact that you call your national sporting events the "World Series"

Didn't the British win Bunker Hill as well? Not a great win, but still 235 years ago...

You dont usually celebrate over a draw.
Sigh, so cynical.

If you're the complete underdog against a far higher-rated team, then yes, a draw is a reason to celebrate.

I'll never forget our draw against England in Italia 90, the whole of Ireland went mental.

Of course, the next time we played England we were winning but the English fans tore thier seats up and threw them at Irish fans, stopping the game. That was very frustrating.
