Use whatever is in the room you're in right now to defend yourself.

Hmm, my best bet would probably be a turbo lighter, it'll probably work if I put the flame on his face or something. Yeah my room is pretty short on defensive weaponry.

Oh hell...

Well, I've got a chair, a large lamp, some scissors, a stool, vacuum cleaners, a game system with controllers, clothes hangers--nice metal ones.

I can probably beat up, whip and strangle with some of these items. And stab. Don't forget the stabbing.

if I can't get the 12 gauge, I guess I'll have to garrote them with the laptop's power cord. Actually, that's the better option as it's less messy, and I'm renting..

My wang.

Srsface Answer: I've got a model kunai pair in my room, they may or may not seriously injure him but at the least they'll hurt a lot.

I have dumbells that I have to assemble, i'd just take the bar that the weights go on, its heavy and easy to hold.

I have several pens, a pair of scissors, a lamp, a glass, a tape measure, and a three inch thick book. All within arms reach. Oh, and some pocket knives in a box in the closet.
I'll be fine.

I've got a large model of the Saturn V rocket on a shelf.
I'm guessing that would be a good stab weapon...

A tanto, wakizashi, katana, Roman dagger, and gladius. Sadly, my cavalry sabre is in my den. I also have two dogs in my room.

I'd go with the power brick for my 360. Heavy enough to hurt, simple enough to likely not be damaged by the swing.

I'd grab a root beer bottle and shatter it on the desk next to me.
I would absolutely fail to create a weapon, and probably very badly injure my hand.
Hopefully, the burglars would fall over and die laughing.
This is my defense strategy in most situations.

a knife! lucky me! sharp, long enough for the purpose, needs no ammo, no training, and cannot block

also, i have an old CRT monitor which i could throw at them (see? that's why i never bought a TFT, how do you want to defend yourself with one of those paperweights?

and i have teapot, metal, half full; guess that's make for a nice surprise, too

also lots of DVDs in arms reach; they'd make for a nice distraction when spammed. i hope. so i can go for my last ranged attempt: a plate

that's why i'm lazy and don't put stuff back in its place when no longer needed:
always be prepared!!

Why do so many Escapists have weapons? I know it's perfectly within your rights to have them, but honestly why would you want something that's designed to injure or kill someone? I just don't understand. Anywho I have a rubbishy 3/4 size kids acoustic guitar still in my room next to my proper one, so I guess I'd reach for that, to look like I know what I'm doing.
Can't vouch for anyone else's specific reasons, but most weaponry have a practical use outside of combat. Everything not under that category can be collected for historical and/or artistic value, or just because the individual thinks it is cool. Then of course there is the primary use for weaponry, self defense is a matter for concern for many people, and having something with which one can defend home and family is a great comfort.

It doesn't surprise me in the least that many people have weaponry of all kinds, its easy to get and there are indeed many personal reasons to have them.

My "contribution" was a hunting knife, shotgun, machete, and paintball gun. The knife and machete have both seen a great deal of use in my hands, from woodcarving to clearing underbrush in the woods. Paintball gun is a fun toy when used right, only dangerous when abused. The shotgun is also used for fun, I haven't gone hunting in years, but I still enjoy target practice.
