Or I can just buy it on the PC to start with, and get added benefits like saving $15 ($10 cheaper to start, plus an extra $5 off for pre-purchasing), a free copy of Portal 1 (another pre-purcahse bonus), the ability to use a mouse and keyboard instead of a Dualshock 3, not being tied to PSN while I play, very low risk of being sued by Valve because I did something they didn't like, and not being told I have no self respect by Gabe Newell because I use a competitor's product as well.

Valve, I love you guys, but you could add a real-life working Portal gun to the PS3 version, and I'd still just buy the game for PC. Fuck Sony.
That's a bit harsh, man.
Sure, it's a bit more expensive, but when you get the PS3 version, you're buying the game twice. Once for PS3, once for PC. So you can just play together with a friend, one on each platform. Plus PS3 DOES support certain keyboards and mice.

About the free copy of Portal 1... whoever hasn't gotten Portal 1 by now, has been hiding under a rock for the past year and a half, Valve is handing out free copies all over the place, I'm surprised they haven't done some collab with Pepsi, giving Portal 1 with every 2 liter bottle sold.

Even if you dislike Sony, this is a move that should not be berated. Just curious whether DLC will be free through steam on PS3, now...

Once linked, a Steam overlay will give access to both Steam and PSN friend lists at the same time, allowing players to chat and check friend statuses. Most importantly, players will be able to engage in cross-platform play (between PC and PS3) in Portal 2's co-op mode [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/conferences/paxprime2010/8073-PAX-2010-Portal-2-Co-op-Preview].
That is awesome. I have been waiting for this for a long time. That made my week.

What would be the use for split-screen on PC? It's not like you can plug in two keyboards and mice.
Um...yes you can. Hell, I could plug six keyboards and six mice into my machine and use them all. (probably more, but I use a good number of my USB ports) 'Course, it'd look pretty weird having that many keyboards tied into one machine.

Do you mean split-screen? Because if so the PS3 version will most likely have it. But the PC version won't.

Also, the PS3 and PC versions use 2 separate formats of disks, so you can't use one with the other.
Actually, there's no reason the PC version wouldn't or couldn't have split-screen. The code for such a feat is built into the Source engine. Left 4 Dead one and two both had the ability to go split-screen on PC. I've even played through the game several times with a friend that way.

Granted, Valve may have actively blocked or disabled this bit of code on Portal 2, especially given the "split-screen" view feature when playing co-op, but there's no reason one couldn't enable it via the console.

I'm just terrified Sony's corporate interests are going to affect Steam.

I really hate Valve sometimes. :(

Feel free to hate them for anything they've done, just don't hate them for this. They've tried, numerous times over the years, to bring these sorts of features to Live. Microsoft tells them every time, "No. Fuck off." <--- poetic license.

wait, can you buy the PC version, or does it only work with PS3 discs?
No
aw man,
but can you do co-op w/the same disc on console and PC?

I mean that, using the code from the PS3 version, and registering that to my steam account, so that i can co-op w/ someone playing that PS3
Yes, if your Portal 2 on your PS3 and have registered your steam account then you will be able to play Co-op alongside a PC user. Later on when PC users create mods of their own levels after the eventual SDK release, PS3 will be able to play those levels as well.
A PC user on my account though? I understand that PC users can play with PS3 user, but can they play together if they are both logged onto the same account. Can I have a friend in the same room playing on my PC on my Steam account while I'm playing on my PS3 also logged onto my Steam account?
Been wondering the same thing. If I buy the ps3 version, can my friend play on the PS3/PC and I play on the other?

I foresee many, many, many people selling their PC code to PC playing buddies. Does Valve have some way to prevent that?

From the support page... https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=5477-WPJM-9388#features

"Only PlayStation®3 split-screen co-op can be played using a single copy of the game. When you purchase a new copy of Portal 2 for PlayStation®3, you will receive an in-box code which provides your linked Steam account with access to your copy of Portal 2 on your computer. The game is still owned by only a single Steam account--another copy will be required to play online co-op with a friend."

So no...You can play on your PC or on your PS3...Not on both at the same time...

Figured as much, and it makes sense; it works just like Steam's current setup, where one account can only be used by one computer at a time.

Aw, I was JUST thinking that it'd be awesome to see the same type of functionality on the 360, but then I remembered that GFWL is the same market as Steam. Oh well, that would have been sweet!

Well, I guess Sony proved Gabe wrong.

It's pretty impressive (assuming it all works) that Sony are willing to work with Valve to that level. I can't see Microsoft allowing cross platform content anytime soon.
Exactly. Also I must say I'm excited for the game! But its cool that Valve and Sony are starting to hammer out some agreement considering the lack of Valve on the PS3 in the past. Hopefully this will continue...
Okay, now I?m really confused. I may be mis-reading this but is Valve actually supporting the ps3 better than Sony? That?s what it seems like to me. Not that I'm complaining, I'm just glad my ps3 will finally be getting some decent support.
That?s not even the scary part. The scary part is that I have more faith in Valve properly supporting the ps3. If you told me I?d be saying this two years ago, I would?ve laughed milk out of my nose and I haven?t drank a cup of milk in 20 years.

The cross platform co-op is actually very impressive. Will this be the first?

Between this and Windows 7 phone (as well the Zune), is anyone else getting the feeling that MS just enters a field and the quits it?

I don't have a PS3, but I might get the PS3 version... If I'm not misunderstanding, I can buy it, redeem my PC version, then sell the PS3 version to someone at like half price and make a profit.

So I read the knowledge base article and it specifically says that PS3 saves are not compatible with Mac or Windows. Does this mean that I can play on PC and go to PS3 but then I'm stuck on my PS3? Thats kind of a bummer, I was hoping for full two-way transitions of saves.
If you progress to a certain point on ps3 you upload your save to steam cloud and can continue on your pc
