Valve, just stop... (a rant)

The Valve logo, an icon of gaming, with such great games as Half-life 1 and 2, Left 4 Dead, and of course the famous Counterstrike. One of the greatest game companies ever to have put games onto the market, with excellent stories, hidden secrets, and characters who faces will never be forgotten.

My first exposure to valve was in The Orange Box, so I am a bit of a late bloomer here. I played it, took on the combine with a crowbar, taunted as a scout, and loved Portal of course (Who here really hasn't? Speak now or forever hold you silence.) and kept it in my library for many years after. My next game was L4D. I love zombies, and when I heard that Valve was taking a crack at the genere, I was overjoyed. When it came out, I was overjoyed! I loved the hunter and being the Tank was pure excitment.

But with all of this, after all the fun I have had, I just have one request for Valve, stop. Just stop it now. Stop making games.

Perhaps I should clarify that, stop releasing games for the 360 and PS3. (Hold your venom PC elitist, so what if I am a 360 player and not a PC player, I deserve no less quality for my money.)

This really stemed from L4D and TF2 mainly, I loved every second of L4D, it was dark, gritty, and funny at the same time, but the problem isn't with Valve on this, it's with Microsoft. (Again, hold you venom.) We cannot download custom maps, nor can we make them. And TF2 was great! It was an excellent shooter and was a knee slap all the way through, but you never released downloads for it. (Keep holding that venom...) In the end though, I just ended up feeling cheated of my money.

Tl:DR
Valve, I cannot help but feel abandoned. I know it is not your fault for the hinders that get placed on your games on consoles, but don't short change us if you know for a fact that you cannot provide the same level of quality for us as you could a PC gamer.

And before you begin, I hold no ire towards Valve, simply the way their games get treated with consoles in mind.

Their games are made with PC gamers in mind first and console gamers second. I see no issue with this. Don't buy VALVe games for the console if you do not believe the quality is up to par.

It boggles my mind that you feel cheated when you got TF2 for $20 ($2.50 if you bought on Halloween) because you didn't get free upgrades. Most companies would charge $60 for a game like TF2.

Yep, Valve console ports suck. After all, these are the guys that made Steam.

I'm really curious as to how the Portal 2 gig will work out on the PS3, though. Because it looks really good, and if it all works out, Microsoft will have absolutely no excuse.

Yeah, I'm a big fan of Valve. Maybe my favorite, but the console ports are lame, I mean why can't they give them the TF2 Updates, and L4d was only fun with the custom maps after you finished the campaigns 100 times in one week. Hopefully this will be fixed with portal two with the ps3.

Sorry just comes with the console area. If you want this content all I can recommend is going to PC.
From what I see console gamer reject level design unless simplified to the level of Little Big Planet and Halo.

Because Microsoft would make them charge money for them and they don't want to was their reasoning.

The core game is still in the box, and for the vast majority of players (mostly casual gamers) that's all they really need. Extra customization and download-ables are called 'add-ons' for a reason. They shouldn't detract from the experience in their absence. I for one hate downloading add-ons for ANY game. The game should be able to stand up on its own without them.

Unless I am misunderstanding the point of your thread...

The orange box was fine on the console, both L4D games too. Dunno what you're so irked about.

On a lighter note, has anyone noticed the amount of people telling game companies to stop and listen to them increase lately?

Yeah, console ports are bad both ways. Us "PC elitist" have been dealing with the opposite direction of porting for years, so I can commiserate with you because I know how you feel. It's just a damn shame that consoles are so profitable, because L4D2 runs on my 7 year old PC that I gave to my younger brother. A game that scaleable doesn't need console ports, because anyone with a PC probably can run it, even if it's not cutting edge.

What? You want Valve to stop making games for the 360 completely because Microsoft won't let them do anything with the additional content?

Custom maps on the 360 is impossible, between microsoft wanting to charge for everything and the limitations of the 360 it would be difficult. Not trying to bad mouth the 360 but maps have to be optimized a lot more than on PC where there's more resources.

Case and point: 360 has 256mb of ram, most pcs have 2-8gb. While I'm sure there's willing people who would do this, there's again Microsofts xboxlive policy.

Should have bought the Orange Box. It was $50/60 and you got Portal ($20 value), TF2 ($20 value), and HL 2 ($50 value).

I actually find this quite amusing ... after all the time PC gamers have been complaining about console ports it seems consolers are joining the fray and complaining about PC ports.
Valve is dedicated to making good games which, for the most part, are aimed at the PC - And I love that, because it's going against the current trend of "make game for console, edit things for PC version and resell" and simply making good games for one platform.
I'm not saying that ports are a bad thing - I'm just saying that it's your bad luck that there's a corporation out there doing the opposite of what you've come to live with.

So you want Valve to stop making games because Microsoft won't allow updates for the games you enjoyed...

that doesn't make any sense... shouldn't this rant be aimed at Microsoft for not allowing free addons?

Or EA for handling the ports so crappily...<.<
