I'm aware that L4D has Versus, but you know what I mean.

I think by this point there isn't a single person who doesn't own a copy of tf2.

Wow. I mean, I realise that it doesn't really cost them much, but still... wow.

It doesn't cost them anything except bandwidth.
No physical copies to distribute.

You might argue they lose money on potential profit from sales because the customers gets free copies.
But then you might also argue they get more sales because such things draws more customers.

Agreed. Though someone might have seen that for trying to promote the competition and would have stirred up some kind of fuss about it. Either way, it does not matter to me.
