Valve is probably the only company that would do this sort of thing. And that's why I buy everything using Steam.

If only Activision was watching this and emulating Valve, instead of standing around in their meeting room in the lowest circle of hell, asking "Why does the entire world hate us" as they eat baby seal and aborted fetuses while counting their money and working on their leather nazi wallets

Valve: Sorry activision we messed up bans on your game
Activision: Meh, don't worry just un-ban them
V: Oh we also gave them 24,000 copies of L4D2
A: YOU DID WHAT!?!?!
The best part of all this, it keeps Bobby quite for a week while he sits in his darkened office mumbling to himself "But that doesn't make a profit. Free isn't more than not free."

If someone of the banned guys does not have friends, or has me as a steam friend, send me a copy :D
Now this is the reason I respect valve. Quality games, low prices, love us PC users and are just plain awesome. The only way this could be better, is to give us a Half-life 3 trailer.
what he said, I totally want a free copy of l4d2, I haven't bought it for pc :p

They should've given away TF2.

It'd make more sense.

A primarily competitive MP game in exchange for lost time in another competitive MP game.

I'm aware that L4D has Versus, but you know what I mean.
I think by this point there isn't a single person who doesn't own a copy of tf2.

They gave away between 12,000 and 24,000 copies of a game?!

Wow. I mean, I realise that it doesn't really cost them much, but still... wow.
It doesn't cost them anything except bandwidth.
No physical copies to distribute.

You might argue they lose money on potential profit from sales because the customers gets free copies.
But then you might also argue they get more sales because such things draws more customers.

Valve has an excellent policy when it comes to issues like this:

"Oh snap, we fucked up!"

"BRIBE EVERYONE! EVERYONE!"
Ahahaha
Best idea ever

Ah, finally a company that understands the secret of customer recovery: Give people more than they expect after a mistake, it completely turns the table on the situation.

Agreed. Though someone might have seen that for trying to promote the competition and would have stirred up some kind of fuss about it. Either way, it does not matter to me.
