Okay, Half-Life 2 has been waiting for completion for SIX YEARS. SIX. YEARS. Hell, its been two and a half since Episode 2! Meanwhile they're churning out sequels to unique games which could easily have stood on their own because they're MONEY-GRABBING WHORES.
Talented, upper-class whores who bring their own riding crops and wash at least once a day, but whores nonetheless.
So...they are, in fact, a company?
Anyways, different development teams. Yelling at them for getting Portal 2 out while Episode 3 lags behind is kind of like a teacher yelling at little Jimmy because he wrote a long, detailed, excellent paper while Timmys homework continues to be incomplete. Yeah, I agree that we have to question what the hell is going on with Episode 3, but again, we have to remember that Valve is a company. It's not like they don't want to release Episode 3, and proceed to make oodles of cash. They want to. Therefore, unless they are masochists, there is some reason why it is taking so long. Personally, I realize that there is a ton of good games out there to play, so unless I'm looking at a release date paired with a bunch of hype, and then the game gets pushed back, it doesn't bother me any.
Personally, I'm not sure which Im looking forward to more: Episode 3, or people stopping the constant mentioning of Episode 3 in response to even the most tangential news regarding Valve.
Also, looking forward to Portal 2. The first Portal was certainly great, but it was also intended to be a test, a little amusing side project worth trying in order to test out a few ideas they had rattling around. Now they are putting forth full effort into making a full blown game, AND useing info they gathered from Portal 1, functioning essentially as a massive Beta. Most games get better as they have sequels, its just that people feel like they have treaded this ground before. With Portal being so short, there was no chance to get used to the game. This sounds VERY promising.
Actually, the model of, "Release a very short, less expensive game, and following it up with a full sized sequel in order to test out game concepts" could be a very effective model for games, and that much more reasonable with Digital Distribution.
