So what these people are saying is that only african-american people live in New Orleans?

Isn't that in itself just a scootch racist?

This person didn't have a foot to stand on in this argument from the moment they started typing, clearly.

Believe it or not, the other day I asked a friend of mine why there was no black zombies on L4D. I think it actually is less racist to have mixed races on a game.
It's madness seeing how some people react to the most pathetic things such as this. Not only that, but there will be others that believe Valve is in the wrong! Can't people just appreciate games, and until there is a game that features you being the leader or a part of some kind of racial genocide leave the racism topic alone?

AT FIRST, the setting of New Orleans seemed a little insensitive to me, but not because of race. Just because of all the city has been through in recent years. However, upon further reflection, it struck me as a cool idea purely for the purpose of setting. Having a swamp-themed zombie game seems awesomely terrifying and the deep south really does not get too many games set to its local. New Orleans is as good as any . . . better than south Florida, where you would be shooting thousands of zombie Grandma's.

I guess it's when I realized that, initially, you could use my thought of 'insensitive' and apply it to New York City from 9/11...which is again ridiculous. We tear the crap out of that city in every disaster movie every made. So much in fact, that I'm really, really tired of NYC movies. Here's hoping that the change of tax laws in Mass. will let some movie makers blow up Boston sometime soon. ;)

Let me be honest. Racism is pretty much dead as a mainstream phenomena within the US. Yes there are guys who wear sheets over their heads and run around with a pro-white agenda, but they are a tiny minority and hardly well loved.

However, for a lot of people who are poor, and on the fringes of society the accusation of "racism" is what keeps them going. A sort of monolithic enemy (which doesn't even need to exist) to justify and define existance rather than looking at the hard work that needs to be done. Especially with modern black culture I think it's an uncomfortable realization for many to look at it and realize that a lot of the problems they face are themselves, rather than the genuine pressure of society.

Guys like Bill Cosby have talked about it for a while, with mixed responses. Basically the point that all the oppertunities are there, but when your dealing with a racial subculture that actually considers things like education a negative thing, to the point where it can be considered "selling out" or "not black enough" it's an issue.

At any rate, there is still enough oomph left in racism where it results in attention not only from minority communities, but from overenthusiastic liberals who really want a clear cut battle to fight, whether it exists or not. Simply by mentioning racism this thread got like 300+ responses for example.

While it has chilled out over the last few months, I was getting irritated when it seemed EVERY game was being criticized as racist at least in places like Gamefaqs forums for a while.

Also, for the record I do not consider Resident Evil 5 even remotely racist. Like it or not tribals and such still exist out there in Africa and magazines and TV programs do shows on them. Nothing racist about it when it's true, and in the context of RE 5 it makes perfect sense that during a parasite outbreak they would be hit like anyone else in the region. Sheeva's "Sheena" costume is also far from being racist, it's a sexy look and fits with a fantastic african theme. Truthfully though I *DO* think they should have given Chris a
Tarzan costume to make the point off handedly.

On top of all of this all I can say is 'meh' because frankly I wouldn't be surprised if Valve started the whole thing themselves to generate publicity. The timing is uncanny. Here we've got a racism accusation which will help detract from the criticisms of them lying to their fan base. On top of that it's an accusation where a lot of fans are ultimatly going to really behind them and support the game just because it's ridiculous. Not to mention all the sales to minorities who might not otherwise be interested because they want to see what all the fuss is about. Irregardless of the source of the accusations this could not have happened at a better time for the game.

Also when it comes to blacks in video games, I'll be entirely honest in saying that there are games that could be considered a LOT more negative about them (and all minorities) than even RE 5. I mean look at your various crime-themed games. In Saint's Row each of the gangs is pretty much a differant ethnic criminal stereotype (except for the Saints which is delightfully multi-cultural). Then you've got San Andreas (one of the best games of it's genere to many), and various other spin offs and such. Taken as a whole I'd say those games do more to present a negative image than any zombie-frag-fest ever conceived.

Someone needs to do a giant mosaiac picture of zombies of every race and creed and the caption will be "We're all unliving together!"

Seriously, some artist needs to get on that.

Black zombies = equality, because that's what equality IS: the knowledge that you're going to be treated like EVERYONE else.

I am more shocked by the Call of Juarez complaint... the game is set during the Civil War, holy f**k people... get over yourself and STFU about racism where there isn't any except the racism you make up to sell papers.

Kind of funny how the people who cry racism the most are oversensitive white people and black people, huh? What about the Native Americans, who cries for them?

This argument is ludicrous, of course a cival-war era game is going to have a cival-war era flag. And as others have stated, last I checked, there were black people in New Orleans. So what's the problem?

To the guy from Houston who blogged this insane crap: WORST BLOG EVER.

You know, every game is racist if you think about it. Why is it racist to shoot a someone who isn't white compared to normal to shooting a white person? Maybe instead of coming out with games that have people in it, we will convert all the people to TVs. That way everyone will be happy, PETA, the anti-racist video game people and it will teach kids to HATE TVs!

The Confederate flag is not a symbol of racism, dammit!
Sure, there are some idiots, like klansmen, who misuse it, but they also misuse the crusifix, too!
The Confederacy itself wasn't about white supremacy, either! A lot of states wanted to keep slavery, but the essence of the war was about a different governmental mindset: The North wanted the states wanted a federal government with all the power while the Confederacy wanted the states to be independent, almost to the point of being their own individual countries.
Irk! Exaggerating morons!
For christs sake it takes place in the eighteen-hundreds in the west! You expect their not to be confederate flags? Honestly. Just retarded what this guy says.

This isn't helping Texas' image.

Utter insanity indeed.
Indeed, we all aren't Confederate Flag wielding wackos who wear ten-gallon hats and were not the most reverse racist city either.

The Swastika is not a symbol of racism, dammit!

Todays times there is a lot of history connected to symbols. Living in a country (or two) where it is far from southern America, it can now only really be seen with some sort of hate surrounding it.

EDIT

I should mention I have no problem with it in the game seeing as it goes along with the times and place.

Set in New Orleans, players will have to fight their way through hordes of zombies - with several of them who appear to be African-Americans.
Heavens forbid we might have to kill a few black people (african-american is a meaningless term, used only by politically correct people, also known as disgusting cowards) instead of just slaughtering our way through white people. Cause everyone knows it's great to kill white people!

(That was sarcasm, by the way. I know it's obvious, but some people really need it pointed out to them.)
