The 30 Days of Night ones. They pretty much aren't humanoid, hard as shit to kill, and in general, fucking vicious.

The only vampire that i'd call king of anything would be Dracula from Castlevania. for the most part vampires just annoy me. They're either moody and boring or they're rust another mindless movie monster but its hard not to like an 8 foot tall guy that lives in a castle full of monsters and can turn into a giant fire breathing demon.

To be clear i'm talking about just the Castlevania Dracula. I don't mind The original Dracula story but its not my fav as far as horror goes.

Old World of Darkness vampires. I really want to play the table top game, only really played VTMB, but I still want to at least try it. :/

Edit: True kings, well that depends on who you're talking to. Sabbat think that second Gen are going to show up...I guess Caine would be the king.

The scariest vampire ever in my opinion was the Dracula from Dr. McNinja. Terrifying.

But the best vampire type? The source. Dracula. As in, the original book.

Blood sucking, capable of flight, minor hypnotism, weakened by the sun and garlic, sleeps in a coffin.

Why? I feel that it captures what it means to be vampire. Appears and acts human enough to pass as human, yet monstrous enough to invoke fear. And preys on humans as well.

My personal favourite right here. :)
Very much seconded ;D

Going on what I've read/watched; Didn't like the Vampire Knight vampires (too damn emo), quite like the vampires in Skulduggery, not too keen on the ones in Anne Rice's novels (too much reminiscing, not enough badassery), Dracula in the CastleVania series never really made and impact on me since he was barely in all the ones I've played, and I have a particular fondness for Terry Pratchett's Maledict
As for the king? Probably CV's Drac out of those though he might have to fight Hellsing's version for the title...
I'll stomach pretty much any vampire interpretation so long as they don't spend the whole goddamn book/programme/film whining (guess what I'm referring to!)

Liches are the kings of the Undead.
Damn right :3

OT: If it's restricted to vamps, then I guess I'd go with The vamps from Bloodlines since there are quite a few types included.

I find vampires to be a teensey bit overrated, so I don't really have a favorite. As long as they don't sparkle and drink blood I think they're fine.

If the creators of Vampire lore knew that leeches used an anticoagulant and a long siphon to drink blood, or that a vampire bat nipped a sleeping victim and lapped the blood, the legend of vampires would not include sucking...but that said...

I am pretty sure that whoever created Vampire: the Masquerade, borrowed heavily, especially the idea of the flesh shaping Zemichi(forget the spelling, but pronounced Zahmeechie, as opposed to Zamahchey...and the same people who pronounce it that way call the Ventrue, Vontru....and probably call the chain store Target, Tarjay.) Well, they got the flesh shaping idea from Brian Lumley's Necroscope books...mainly the stories about the Nightside/Sunside Vampire world. Shaitan was the first vampire, but the coolest was probably Vormulac.

George RR Martin's Fevre Dream is worth reading...for all you not sick of the vampire/zombie meme which is all about the impending boring and craptastic apocalypse world, where we dehumanize anyone outside our own family or other social group that also wants to eat.....so we can headshot them without any slight to our conscience.

Not exactly vampires per se, but the Anzati from the Star Wars universe, basically they suck your brains out from your nose. They want your 'brain soup', Man they freak me out.

Anyone who said Twilight vampires deserve to die...painfully and slowly.

I'm not sure if I want to agree with Alkaline and go with Hellsing anime/manga on this or go with the Supernatural approach to vampires.

You forgot the Lincoln part of the guy's name. And I don't remember him saying that in the book... may have been something I blocked out though.

Hellsing's Alucard would probably be the most ridiculously over-powered vampire i've ever seen so he'd probably take home the crown and title.

However my favourite vampire is Bram Stoker's Dracula. It just seems to me like that book should be the referance guide for anyone who wants to write a vampire story. It was dark and exciting as it should be, and the vampire had a classy facade in a chilly setting to cover up what he really was.

For a more family friendly vampire why not Nos-4-atu from Buzz Lightyear of Star Command? Still creepy for children and a genuine threat to robots... plus his bite can turn people into mechanical werewolves under some radioactive moon. How awesome is that?
