I like the way they're portrayed in the Vampire: The Masquerade games (Based of a pen and paper game with the same name, from what I know), for some reason.
Some are living in harmony with humans (night-time, obviously), while others have no regard for humanity. Divided into clans, each with its own strength and weaknesses.
Their traits: Paler than humans, are clinically dead, got a body that can take a beating, regeneration, sharper senses. They're monsters, yes, but not all are downright terrible, despite being a monster.
Their weaknesses (as explained by "Jack" in Bloodlines):
"Forget that comic book crap, kid. Garlic, useless. A cross, shove it up their asses. A stake, only if it catches you in your heart, and even then it just paralyzes you. Running water, I bathe... occasionally. Now, a shotgun blast to the head, that's trouble, kid. Fire, that's real trouble. Sunlight, catch one sunrise and it's all over, kiddo."
Works for me, as long as it keeps away from Twilight's "Sparkhulz Vampire"
