Hm...this is a funny one. I liked reading through the posts... The question, 'What is a vampire?', is a very broad one. I will try to answer it as succinctly as possible, but there are a great many more details I have to leave out. Forgive me, I was Google searching something else and this came up and I felt I had to see what it was all about. So...
A vampire is simply a different biological creature. Really, it depends on which species you're talking about as to the definition I could give you. The one most often referred to under the "what is a vampire?" topics is a Strigoii. Strigoii typically have reddish hair (like humans having brown hair) and naturally red eyes. That's the reason we like cloudier days-it's easier for us to see with lighter pigment in our eyes. Strigoii are indigenous to the Balkans but thanks to planes and cars we can be found just about anywhere. And since we are alive, we face death. We have to, otherwise we would not be considered alive. It is one of the 10 vital characteristics of life. Most Strigoii live to be about 300 years old due to a quicker cell regeneration rate.
I'm going to dispel the ****talk now: we are not afraid of religion. I am a Christian and it does not kill me to walk into a church. I worship God, thank you very much. Sure there are some devil-worshiper vampires out there, but that doesn't mean we're all evil and demonic.
We have fangs (we go through 3 sets in a lifetime, baby set, intermediate set, and adult set); Strigoiis' slide down over the outer incisors, as do most species (except for Geyal-theirs come down over their canines). But having fangs does not mean we are maniacal bloodsuckers and will jump you in a back alley. No, that's illegal. We don't kill for blood. There are people you could refer to as 'coffin bait' (excuse me). They are basically prostitutes who get kicks out of vampires and being bitten. There are also humans who donate blood to vampires of their own volition. Nobody gets raped or killed and if they do they get charged accordingly. There aren't exceptions to the law just for us.
Vampires have the ability to access more brain power than humans do. FYI, any given human is only using about 10% of their possible brain power. There are ways to channel it and anyone can do it. Vampires just have more of a natural ability. That has something to do with hormonal patterns when we're young, I think. The ability to do that develops with age.
Yes, vampires can reproduce. We do it just like you do.
No, vampires do not live in the graveyard unless they're very strange people or they work there.
No, vampires' skin does not turn to ash in the sunlight. There are other nocturnal species of animals out there; why do people freak out if vampires are? There are some diurnal species of vampire as well, the Vrykolokas included. The majority of vampires today, despite their species's roots, are diurnal. This is encouraged and called vampire/human mainstreaming. We don't want to stand out.
As I said before, most vampires have the ability to use more brain power than humans do. Many vampires can shape shift. Some never develop the ability to shape shift their entire bodies but can instead alter their features. About 80% of Strigoii can change their body form entirely (shock, I didn't know that before) and about 15% can only change their features. 5% cannot shape shift at all.
Vampire families tend to be on the larger side, mainly because the pregnancy term is shorter than in humans. Unfortunately, incest is more common in vampire families because the oxytocin (or "cuddle hormone") levels in male vampires are lower than in human males.
Vampires do not live entirely on blood, at least Stigoii don't. Many species are carnivorous, but Stigoii are omnivorous. We eat regular food (no, crossing over does not mean your McDonald's addiction will go down without a fight) but we also drink blood, for my family about 1-2 glasses a day and usually with a meal. I personally think the whole constant blood-drinking that some people I know do is kind of gross. There are places you can buy a blood-like substance that contains the hemoglobin and minerals that regular blood contains and vampires need, but is not real blood. 100% sin-thetic. xD But they don't call it TruBlood, sorry Sookie Stackhouse series fans.
Finally, vampires are allergic to a few things. We never cook with any member of the Allium family-this includes onions, garlic, leeks, and the like. These herbs cause severe allergic reactions in Strigoii. Another plant to be avoided is monk's hood or wolfsbane. It is a member of the buttercup family and is also especially deadly. Post-mortem signs are usually those of suffocation as they cause the throat to swell and cut off breathing passages. Wine is also avoided, straight-up or cooked into a dish. It raises blood toxicity and can result in fatigue and even sickness if drunk in large amounts. The blood (usually a silvery sheen) turns a horrible shade of grey. The areas where this is most noticeable are the neck and thin skin around the lips and eyes. They tend to lose their color and appear dull.
Hope that...helps, answers more questions than it raises. I can be all to verbose. I'm sorry, it's what college essays do to you...
A website you might see is my sister's: silverbloodsedu.webs.com. Totally free, the way we like it, because the Leonard clan members are not filthy rich Count Draculas. xD
