I'm Vegan and basically just eat a wide variety of fruit, veg and everything that isn't meat basically and perhaps you should invest in a couple of books to help you get information on things like nutrition.

Also prepare for the hate(which i suppose is demonstrated somewhat by some of these responses) seriously i get so much hate for being a vegan it's ridiculous.

Oh yes and you won't need to take pills to supplement your diet they're just a recomended idea i have been vegan now for almost two years before that i was vegetarian for 3 and i have never once taken any form of supplement so only if you want to.
Im glad you are healthy but there is no way to get vitamin b12 except animal products or supliments.

"The B-12 vitamin is of note because it is not available from plant products, making B-12 deficiency a concern for vegans. Manufacturers of plant-based foods will sometimes report B-12 content, leading to confusion about what sources yield B-12. The confusion arises because the standard US Pharmacopeia (USP) method for measuring the B-12 content does not measure the B-12 directly. Instead, it measures a bacterial response to the food. Chemical variants of the B-12 vitamin found in plant sources are active for bacteria, but cannot be used by the human body. This same phenomenon can cause significant over-reporting of B-12 content in other types of foods as well."

lack of B12 is linked with memory loss and cognitive defects. There is one theory that part of the reason we get more doddering as we get old is because ther gut doesn't absorb B12 as well in later life. You seem nice so get your self down Holland and Barrett for the supliments.

Vegan is a lifestyle choice (and a moral choice for some). Its not cheating if you take supliments. Millions of none vegans do it too.

As long as you don't do what my friend did and start bothering meat eaters about their choices, then you won't have many problems.

However his choice in his change of diet is caused by a moral belief. In case you didn't read his first post he has changed his diet due to the belief that it is wrong to raise animals to be killed.

And surely he has earned respect for actually doing something about what he believes in rather than just sitting by idly and doing nothing. He is making a difference by not eating meat and reducing demand. Okay yes it is hard to imagine that one person will make that much of a difference but it is not just one person. He is joining many others who are turning vegetarian.

I also agree with you on the point that religion should be criticized. However it appears that you are just shunning this guy because of his choices without even thinking about his point of view. Criticizing someone about their choices without a thought of how they may believe in something different to you is just plain discrimination.
I shun him because in the immortal words of house "everybody lies". Perhaps not intentionally but he is certainly lieing to himself.

It's a BS excuse for one simply reason. Everything dies eventually. Just because we choose to eat it does not change the fact that it WILL die one day. Everything is raised to one day die. If we didn't eat it, something else would. Would you try and change a wolf and force it to eat vegetables even though it is a carnivore? No you wouldn't because they evolved like that.As has been stated before, humans evolved to consume meat because it is key to our survival and remaining superior on this planet. If he's going to let something as irrelevant and pointless as morals get in his way of having a prestine functioning body then he may aswell shoot himself in the head right now.

Too bad he will though, eventually. Thats how it starts.

Actually as a Vegetarian you're probably likely to be healthier. Just make sure you get protein from other things like cheese...unless of course you go vegan in which case enjoy your quorn.

Wheres the proof for that? I suspect you are basing it from studies based in the states and missing out studies from places like italy, frace, germany, etc where they eat a whole variety of meats and still are healtheir than the average person.

One thing I have learned in life is never, EVER trust an american study these days. Tehy A) don't do it right and B) have FAR too small a study group.

No, I wasn't basing it on those. It's just that a lot of meat is quite poor quality due to mass production (battery cows etc.); of course if you buy quality meat then yeah, you'll be healthier as it's easier to get the protein you need. Just being a vegetarian means you avoid the minefield of really shitty meat - 'Jamie Oliver's School Dinners' illustrated this pretty well...probably shouldn't base it on that. Ah well.

Apparently the best diet is red meat, fish, fruit and nuts. Something about prehistoric man eating that and the body getting used to it or something.

Well thats me screwed then, I can eat nuts =P

As for quality meat, its not that hard to find if you just take a few minutes and do your research. Most scottish beef now isn't battery same with poultry and pork.

As for jamie Oliver....hes come under a lot of fire for some of the shit he spouts out. I especially don't like him because he expect the entire education budget to go into food instead of into EDUCATION. Kids are lucky to even GET school dinners. Parents should be providing them with packed lunches, it's not hard to do, and it is cheap these days. So thers no excuse.

That's true, but a lot of people either can't afford it or can't be bothered. Shame really. When I go to Uni next year I doubt I'll be able to afford it :(

Yeah Jamie Oliver actually annoys me, but he just illustrated that thing reasonably well so I mentioned it. We spend 37p per child on school dinners, in France it's £1.10 (not including wine); although you are definitely right, the focus should be education, not the food.

Ahh see thats where you are mistaken ;)

A decent chunk of beef (2 frying steaks for example) can cost at most £5-£10 and that will do you for....4 meals? 23 if you have big portions. Simply slice it into strips and fry it up with some potatoes and a bit of veg and voila! perfection :D

I think eating fish is much more morally incorrect than eating meat. Our oceans are harvested and exploited. Asian shar finning is the worst of all, and so much fisihing is illegally done.
Ehh, I think its fine to kill animals that have been raised in captivity to die, but to rape the ocean is another matter.

Humans are omnivores! You can't make a lion eat only grass and vegetables or turn a cow into a blood-thirsty monster. Just like animals' bodies need what they need, we need both vegetables and meat.
Yeah, but we don't need to eat meat. We can get along just fine with vegetables and beans. Indian food is mostly vegetarian, it's primarily the West that's bought into the heavy meat meals. The problems come in when people assume they can just live off of salad. Lettuce doesn't have much in the way of protean, or anything besides water, but broccoli and beans do.

We're not lions - we can live without eating meat. Making appeals to our ancestors is pointless, because they did all kinds of crap that we wouldn't tolerate in our society. We can make choices. We have options. We can think for ourselves.

It doesn't matter, for the sake of our morality, what our ancestors did. We're here now. We're not going to go backwards if we eat plants instead of meat.
Uhm. Yeah, we do need to eat meat.

And you get proteins from... which vegetable? Broccoli and beans? Hope you don't fart a lot. Hmm, might explain why they are so smug...
1) That was uncalled for. Why the personal attacks?
2) We don't need to eat meat. Vegetarians who eat properly are actually healthier because they don't eat red meat.
3) It depends how you prepare the beans.
1) I didn't know you are a vegetarian. My apologies.

2) Studies. Citation needed.

3) Yeah, because every vegetarian knows that ;d
1) I'm not, I'm just not a fan of the ridiculous arguments made by self-styled carnivores.
2) http://www-news.uchicago.edu/releases/06/060413.diet.shtml

?The adverse effects of dietary animal fat intake on cardiovascular diseases is by now well established. Similar effects are also seen when meat, rather than fat, intake is considered,? Martin and Eshel wrote. ?To our knowledge, there is currently no credible evidence that plant-based diets actually undermine health; the balance of available evidence suggests that plant-based diets are at the very least just as safe as mixed ones, and most likely safer.?
3) Even if they didn't, besides the fact that it's common knowledge, that's irrelevant.

Seriously, do you feel that guilty about eating meat that you're willing to come up with your ridiculous, ignorant assertions?

1) I suggest not calling someone a carnivore before you check what that means. It means only meat. Don't insult people if you don't like that either. Which leads to next point...

2) Of course eating ONLY red meat is unhealthy. We are omnivores for a REASON! We need both plants and meat. I just like meat more. For instance, I eat only fruit and vegetables till noon. Part of diet which prevents mixing meat with cheese, cheese with bread and bread with meat.

3) "Common knowledge" [CITATION NEEDED]. Most of the people in the world eat both meat and vegetables.

I don't feel guilty. Never said I did. Stop putting your words in my mouth.

"That's ignorance, you're being ignorant".

Okay, another reason not to go vegetarian - Vitamin D. Most of the stuff that gives it was meat (fish) or eggs. Oh, they can't eat eggs...

Another question - Can they drink milk? Yes? Why? People breed cows for milk, same with goats and sheep. Or honey. Bees are tortures in small boxes and people steal the honey they make. Also, if they can't eat milk, they also can't eat cheese.

This leads to another thing - you can't eat dairy products. And I think you know that's one of the primary sources of PROTEINS. Sure, you can eat nuts all day, but easier to eat some cheese. But then you are a part of the problem and enslavement of cows. Shame.

Negative Health Effects of Red Meat
Regardless, nutritionists hardly need more evidence about the potentially negative health effects of eating red meat. For starters, the saturated animal fat in red meat contributes to heart disease and atherosclerosis. Recent research also shows that frequent red meat eaters face twice the risk of colon cancer as those who indulge less often. Red meat is also thought to increase the risks of rheumatoid arthritis and endometriosis.

Meanwhile, according to the American Dietetic Association, vegetarian diets can significantly reduce the risk of heart disease, colon cancer, osteoporosis, diabetes, kidney disease, hypertension, obesity, and other debilitating medical conditions. While red meat is a key source of protein and vitamin B12 in North American diets, nutritionists explain that properly planned meat-free diets easily provide these important nutrients while keeping you healthier in the long run.

3) Rinsing your beans will keep you from getting gassy. That should be common knowledge. If it isn't, well, now you know.

As I've said before, the way we factory farm eggs is pretty twisted - it's certainly cruel. There are better ways of getting eggs than battery cages, though they're a bit more expensive, and sometime "free range" just means slightly bigger cages.

And, man, you can get proteins from dark greens and fibers. Calcium occurs naturally in plants (how do you think cows get this element in their milk) and vitamin D is what our skin produces when exposed to sunlight. And, hey, if all else fails, there are supplements.

If you go the vegan route, it just means you have to be a little more aware of what you eat. And that's not a bad thing.

1) Aren't vegan and vegetarian 2 similar, but still a bit different things? Still, I don't think it's really cool. I just laugh at it.

2) Didn't know, I don't eat red meat that much. Doesn't taste too good, I prefer chicken and meatloafs.

3) Also didn't know, mainly because I hate beans.

Why would you eat eggs if you are a vegetarian? You can't. Baby chicks come out of them. You eat an egg, you eat an unborn chicken. I know you can get proteins from dark greens and fibers, but it's still troublesome. Considering some cheese has 40% of proteins in it... Parmesan, I think. You would have to eat a lot of plants to make up that stuff.

Calcium? Never said anything about it. You were the one to mention it. Being exposed to sunlight for too long and you risk skin cancer and (more often) sunburns. Still, you get more from eating eggs and fish. Same with vitamin K - you can eat plants and vegetables, but liver gives you the most K-power.

If you are considering supplements, this means your diet is not effective enough and your body needs something. I think it's pretty normal, seeing as people have been eating both vegetables and meat for the last few thousands of years... But this means being vegetarian is NOT healthier. You might as well carry a bag of glucose and inject yourself every 6-8 hours. I lost 10kg (24 pounds, more or less) when I didn't eat anything and just had intravenous therapy three times a day. Sometimes with painkillers, but my body had everything it needed. Why not just use it every time we are hungry?

Unfertilized eggs contain no baby chickens. Basic biology: egg + sperm = embryo. Plus, even if it was fertilized, I'm pro-choice. Anyway, that's another issue.

Look, the health concerns and benefits are besides the point. The bottom line is, it's possible to be both a strict vegan and perfectly healthy. It's a legitimate option, one that I'm considering, and I have a lot of distaste for the social stigma against it.

As I said, I'm not a vegetarian, but I'm thinking of going "flexitarian" in the fall for economic reasons, health benefits, and, hey, I'll be playing a part in the reduction of suffering. I have no desire to be holier than thou, I just don't like your arbitrary attack on vegans.

No, it means you're being smart. If someone's taking supplements, it means they're making sure they're getting the nutrients they need. It's not "cheating."

Veggie is one thing, vegan just makes no sense whatsoever. If you're a strict vegan, you have no idea what kinds of stuff you have to avoid. M&M's? Not for you, the dye is made from lice. Little things like that. And you can go on with that for a while. We use animal based things in so many things.
About all the health effects you posted earlier: that's all compared with the normal diet nowadays. Too bad that that's a really shitty comparison. Our current diet is shitty, usually contains too much meat, too much of a lot of stuff in general and too little of a number of good things. Saying that going veggie/vegan is better than that is kind of a "no shit Sherlock". The real comparison is with our natural diet. And why would I want to deviate from that natural diet?

Then why aren't just eating some kind of starch porridge with some crushed pills? Or why aren't you just eating the stuff they eat aboard the hovercrafts in The Matrix? Afterall, eating plants still means killing those plants. But yes, he is still right, your diet is ineffective if you have to take medicine to cover for it.
