Garrus Vakarian

A lot of people call him a "bro" but he's much more than that. He's a loyal, upstanding, wise and dedicated turian who, even though he's just a video game character, you feel like he's your friend. Add to that a keen, sometimes dry sense of humour,a never-say-die attitude and a massive heart and you just can't help love the guy.

"There is no Shepard without Vakarian!"

Damn right!

Tiny Tina from Borderlands 2. The pyromaniac little sister I never realized I wanted.
People who game with me know this simple fact: do NOT talk over Tiny Tina if you value your health. ;) Oh, and "Dickalicious" really needs to be 2014's word of the year. Just sayin'.

Speaking of Borderlands, Janey Springs! Mmmm, Janey...

Ursula from GTA V seems to have kidnapped a part of my history. I thought *I* was the only girl who wouldn't take dates to my room because I ate the drywall. Again.

Kinzie Kenzington and Johnny Gat. 2015 rolls in like a BOSS!

Three Dog - the only voice warmer than a nuclear bomb.

Murray the Skull - who else do you trust if you're deep in the Caribbean and wish to spread mild discomfort in the name of EVIL?

And finally, after a good shag, why not head down to Leyawiin and grab a bite to eat? Weebam-Na is always happy to recommend the best dining in town.

Or maybe not.

The entire cast of MGS4 with Liquid Ocelot and Big Boss taking the cake. Kojima always knew how to balance over-the-top anime style action and characters with real world seriousness, but MGS4 became like a parody of itself. Every scene with Ocelot made me laugh and just when I thought it was finally over and I couldn't take anymore came the return of ''lulz here I am again guys stitched myself back together from a few dead bodies'' Big Boss. Mind, he tells this with a straight face before going on a rant about the military industrial complex. I sometimes wonder if Kojima had a few mental breakdowns while making this game or if MGS4 is just passive-aggressive mockery to the 'fans' hating on MGS2.

The more intentionally funny characters were probably the entire cast of Deadly Premonition. Killer7 had some hilarious characters as well.

Elena from Street Fighter III and Street Fighter IV.

Yeah, she wants to fight you, but only because she thinks it's fun. She really doesn't have a really vicious bone in her body. She thinks everyone she meets is her friend and she truly, truly cares about everyone. She has a genuine pure spirit and I fucking love that.

Cue the cheese

On the other end of the spectrum is Kim Kaphwan.

Who, on the regular, beats justice into your soul with his feet.

Also, his Neo Max is sick

Zeke Dunbar from the inFamous games, especially in inFamous 2. He was so amusing to me, and I loved every time he was on screen.

Mordin from Mass Effect.

Wilhelm from Portal 2. I loved him so much in that game. I had to pause the game several times because I was laughing too hard, and couldn't control my mouse.

Varrick from Dragon Age: 2. My god he was so fucking funny! I always had him in my party, no matter what class I played, or where we were going. His banter in cutscenes, and random idle chat with my other companion were just priceless. My favorite part being when you are in the bar, talking to a contact, and Varrick is narrating what you are doing, as if he were writing a book about your current exploits. xD Hawke's reaction to it was so damn funny.

-Varric from Dragon Age: He really makes me happy. He's definitely got a heart of gold, he's always funny and he makes adventuring a joy.

-Bayonetta from Bayonetta: She's funny, classy, badass and she's always having a great time which makes me have a great time.

-Yosuke from Persona 4: He's a realistic character and someone I can actually see myself being friends with in real life. I feel the same way about Varric and Bayonetta except one is a Dwarf and the other a super powered Umbran Witch.

The Elder God from the Soul reaver entries to Legacy of Kain. So unmistakably evil and possibly abit insane all wrapped up in the dulcet tones of Tony Jay. Whats not to smile about whenever he opens one of his many mouths and spouts insane nonsense about wheels?

Also the Guide Voice from the dungeon keeper series.

Also Snarky Man/Ladyhawke in DA2 is just golden. Every line dripping with cheese.

90% of the cast of Wild9 that i can remember.

Dude from Postal 2 has a special place too.

Almost forgot SHODAN

Also Kain and Raziel. Two beings following almost identical paths yet oppose one another til the end.

Theres so many that its actually hard to think more up.

Varric (Dragon Age)
Mordon Solus (Mass Effect)
Ramon Salazar (RE4)
Colette Brunel / Kratos Aurion (Tales of Symphonia)
Locke Cole / Celes Chere (FF6)
Lee Everett (The Walking Dead)

It's hard to describe exactly why these characters stand out. It's usually due to their good hearted yet believable nature like in the case of Varric & Lee. Sometimes it's just got to do with the voice acting like with Mordon, Colette & Kratos. Locke and especially Celes basically flood me with thoughts of amazing moments and music from one of my top 5 games of all time.

Ramon Salazar is simply the most effective villain in video game history for me. There are a lot of games that make you want to hate the villain or get your hands on them but I've never really felt that emotion as the player. Salazar is the only exception to this rule. Some part of me wanted get this guy. His castle is AWESOME and memorable for me. Your sequences with him are short but extremely satisfying. Really...the only thing that fails is how he does the standard RE thing and because a huge monster. That kills it. I wanted to fight Ramon Salazar...not some abomination.

It's important to note that all of these characters have NOT been over exposed to me. There's a reason why I would never put a super iconic character like Link or Mario here. They've simply been around too long and no longer feel refreshing/nostalgic when thinking/seeing them.

Leon S. Kennedy from Resident Evil 4.

He's so cool that it becomes stupid, but it becomes so stupid that it goes right back to cool again.

Cortez from Time Splitters. Be it general funny lines to the eventual "Its time to split" moment it's always a good time with sergeant Cortez.
So nice to know that someone else remembered Cortez. Still, not just Cortez made me laugh, but EVERYONE in Timesplitters: Future Perfect made me laugh. Heck, the robot doesn?t speak and he still makes me laugh.

I missed the days when action game characters didn?t take themselves so dang serious and they could laugh about themselves.

Harry Tipper from TimeSplitters. And Cortez, for that matter.
The whole Timesplitters cast in general is pretty awesome. Just going through all the character descriptions and quotes in the menu gets me laughing. Well except for Hans because... well, he's just really creepy.

Teddy from Persona 4.

He's kind of annoying, but the right kind of annoying.

And he's cute.

Neptune from Hyperdimension Neptunia. The way she speaks is just so adorably unconventional, not to mention that she's pretty cute in general.

Everyone from Persona 4. As an extension, EVERYONE in Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth, except for Teddie. Teddie was good in Persona 4, but in Persona Q they turned his annoyingness way up, to the point where the other characters literally start ignoring him and his antics. Doesn't hurt that he has shit stats.

But, seriously, Persona Q just makes me smile in general. Just take a look at the opening.

Kirby and Toad. Imagine Kirby wearing a Toad hat.

Gauge from Borderlands 2, for being the one new character in the entire game I liked.

Tonberry King from FF8...DOINK!

Starfy, especially when he has his "serious face" on.

Shovel Knight

Captain Qwark from the Ratchet and Clank series springs to mind. He makes me smile the same way Zapp Brannigan does.

So, how about we take this in a different direction? Are there any game characters that make you cringe? I can deal with most game characters and even like a few that some folks hated, such as Ashley in RE4, but I could not stand The Director in Manhunt! Seriously, when I realized that I would have to spend the entire game with this weirdo purring in my ear while I dispatched his thugs I returned the game. Maybe I overreacted and maybe he was only going to contact you a few times in the game, but after a few short messages I decided it wasn't worth continuing to find out! Does anyone else have a character that just rubbed them the wrong way to the point that it ruined the experience of the game?

It took 45 responses for somebody to say Bayonetta? I'm shocked, genuinely, and I also just love her and smile with glee whenever she's around.

Trevor helped ruin GTA V for me, largely because of his role in the plot but I can't stand most of his interactions with Michael. It's not even a "just fuck already" scenario, it's just sighing and waiting until you can continue with the game.
