Ico, Shadow of the Collosus, don't need to explain on those.

Red Dead Redemption, they voice acted and developed the characters beautifully.

American Mcgees Alice, Alice was a cold hearted cynic, making her reltable.

Bioshock, never before had i felt so betrayed and used in a game.

Deus Ex, do i need to explain?

I am bewildered at how few mentions of Alyx Vance there are here.
Well, fear not, because I was going to put her in my post :) So yes, Alyx Vance. Especially at the end of Episode 2, but she is just generally likeable and one of my favorite characters. Also most of the cast in the Mass Effect series, but particularly Tali. I can't really think of any others, because in most games, I don't really empathize with the characters that much. I couldn't give a toss about most of the characters in Fallout 3, for example (not that I didn't like it, it just didn't have the best character interaction). But those two games did a great job with their casts as a whole, Alyx and Tali being the ones I care about most.

Tali, Grunt, Garrus, Mordin, Wrex, Thane, Kratos (No, really) Alyx Vance (To a degree), Jack (Bioshock Guy).....I would say your Little Sister from Bioshock 2, but since I can't seem to remember her name, that would be kind of hypocritical. Eleanor? I think it's Eleanor. And, of course, the emotionally magnificent masterpiece of character development known as.....The Agent. From Crackdown.

Oh, Why? Ok, then.

All the ME characters are here for the same reason. Compelling personal stories, well-written and acted. They feel like real people. They almost feel like friends. Same goes for Alyx.

Kratos is here because, in the end, his story really moved me. And I honestly believe that he has some real emotional depth. No, REALLY.

Jack. Because he's me. When he feels betrayed, I feel betrayed. His emotions are my emotions. Kind of a cheap tactic on the part of the developers, but it worked.

I was honestly shocked when she harvested a Little Sister while telling me that I'd taught her it was OK. I felt worse about harvesting them then I ever had in the first game.

Oh, and the Agent is a joke.

Yeah, that's about it.

Companion Cubes, lol. Actually, Ezio, mostly because he was relatable as a ladies man, and yet helped out with his family. He was also after a good cause.

I really cared about Niko Bellic in GTA 4, but that's probably just me.
Most people seem to despise that game in general.
I agree with you there. While most passed it off as "not fun" or "pointless" I was captivated bu this game. After playing GTA:SA, GTA IV's gritty, unpleasant, almost Noir world was one of the first games I really got hooked by. Nico Bellic was enjoyable to play as but to be honest I thought the majority of the characters were fascinating. I often found myself not minding so much that I failed a mission because it meant I could hear a different conversation. I liked Liberty City so much I am currently heading a Machinima team working on a Romeo and Juliet adaption set in the place (non-cannon for those who are interested[ and if you are interested pm me, we need you and whatever you can do).

I do understand what ninonybox360 was talking about with Alex. It was fantastic to have a strong female character instead a piece of decor that needs saving. Which brings me to Cave Story (Docotsu Motangari or something similar in Japanese), a freeware masterpiece of gaming released in 2004 and still with a strong fan base. It's a 2D sidescroller that will run on anything and as well as having brilliant gameplay it has an engaging storyline with three very different endings(All of which are very simple to achieve ok, this isn't Heavy Rain). Anyway you meet a character called Curly Brace who at first attacks you presuming you are hostile but after being defeated can be turned into an ally of sorts popping up every now and then to assist you. Near the middle of the game she sacrifices herself in the most poignant moment (which is a rip of the titanic, sort of. Ok not intentionally) i've seen in an 8-bit game. There is no lengthy character development, everything is plain and straightforward. Because none is needed. This a game that will take you at the very longest 10 hours to complete and I strongly urge you to download it.

Persona 3 main character, before you ask.
Why do I like the guy? I've always wondered what I, as a person, would be like if I wasn't a smug, sarcastic douchebag with a heart three sizes too small.

The answer? Likable.

Cid, specifically from FFVII (my favorite character from any game) and XI, mostly due to the fact I love airships.

Balthier from XII is there too (favorite character from that game, mostly because he was a suave badass with an airship).

John Marston was a character I found myself attatched to, not so much his son but they don't exactly develop him alot.

Assassins Creed 1 and 2: Desmond and Ezio and a little Altair.
Heavy Rain: Everyone.

Most of the people in Metal Gear Solid minus MGS2. I spent loads of time on that game making Raiden cartwheel down the stairs because he falls over if you do it right. MGS3 was the best and making you walk up a river of 300 dead guys with blood gushing out of their heads while vultures ate their necks was cool. I went for stealth kills and headshots but I killed so many on the cliffs.

Alyx Vance. If she dies, I've got nothing else to live for.
Well, not in the Half Life universe.

Garr, Rei and Tepo from Breath of Fire 3 and, to a lesser extent, Fou-lu from Breath of Fire 4. While the characters from BoF3 were not developed that deeply, I could relate to them more than any other RPG characters of that time because they weren't nat any time on a quest to save the world from some generic evil. They were on a journey motivated by a crisis of faith and crippling self-doubt. Fou-lu was compelling for me because he essentially was the main character, only made bitter and Jaded from having borne witness to the worst of human suffering.

Alma Wade, from the FEAR series.
I know, she's a face-melting, high-octane-nightmare-fueled, psychopathic ghost girl, but really she spends more time in the series' saving the players lives more than endangering them, keeping you company in the dark (don't turn around) and most of the in-game worldbuilding is centered on making her sympathetic.
Really all the girl needs sort her act out is a hug, an ice cream,
and a chastity belt.
