I cared about most of the cast of FFVII (except Yuffie and Cait-Sith (which even now I subconsciously typed as Cait-Shit the first time)). Yuffie, because as a character, she was an annoying, backstabbing bitchcake. To be fair, she was actually pretty good in battle in my opinion so I used her nonetheless, but her character was beyond annoying. And Cait-Sith. Fuck that little fucker in the fucking asshole. Without lube. By a robot. With a spiked 17-inch robodick. Twice. I hate him that much. Totally useless in battle, totally useless as a character, and acted as though he deserved my love and affection anyway. I remember when there was a part where you find a control mechanism that will shrink an entire temple down to pocket-size because you need it, but the mechanism was inside. Someone had to sacrifice them self. Cait-Sith volunteered. I nearly shat myself I was so happy. There was even a blissful five minutes where it looked like he was gone for good! I was dancing a little in that I'm-lazy-so-I'll-just-jiggle-in-my-seat-a-bit way and humming a jaunty tune. Then that five minutes of bliss was over, and the little fucker walks right up to me and both the characters and I shared a moment of utter shock. They because they thought their (backstabbing, annoying) "friend" was back seemingly from the dead, me because I was so god damn pissed about that very fact. In summation, Cait-Sith is a fucker that just couldn't seem to die.
As for other games, Dragon Age: Origins, which I only just recently played through and am playing through again for achievements and such, had a pretty good cast of main characters and the main quest figures were really good too. The only one I take issue with there is the optional party member of Sten. Sten is basically just an ugly face and a merely-decent tank stapled to the word "No," uttered in extremely harsh tones. Seriously, every conversation that I've had with him so far has just been him saying one or so sentences before just saying "No" to my various subsequent questions. The only other character I had any issues with was Zevran, and that was because he leaves the party at one point if your approval with him isn't high enough. It made me so sad when
but that just means the writers knew how to make consequences for your actions or lack thereof and again, it was a genuinely sad moment for me. Even sadder was what happens between you and Morrigan at the very end of the game. It's truly depressing if you do certain options at that point.
The list goes on, with such titles as Kingdom Hearts 1 & 2, Shadow of the Colossus, Starcraft and Starcraft: Brood War, Portal (You will be missed, my beloved Weighted Companion Cube!), Left 4 Dead 1 & 2, the list goes on.
