Can anyone explain to me why I can openly rip a man's arms off, beat him to death with them, and then smoke crack out of his eye sockets in a video game and have in completely uncensored
Wait, what game's that from?

And because sex is more taboo then violence. I don't really agree with it either, but then I don't particularly care.
well i know vampires masquarade allows you to kill people by beating them to death with a severed arm. its also quite funny because according to that game a dagger will do as much damage as the severed arm

In Rome, which was the biggest empire of its time, had violent gladiator shows at colosseums but I don't remember hearing of people making out for an audience or something like that. I'd say that Roman culture had a pretty large influence on modern day culture, it being the widest spread civilization back then.
Actually, Rome was, so I have read, pretty big on public orgies and homoeroticism. Women were generally suppressed, but the men were extremely open about their bodies, even going as far as to have men who were friends or coworkers having intercourse with each other.

Because whilst showing violence to younger children is dependant on context almost all children WILL be repelled or disturbed by sexual intercourse.

Because most people don't actually want to see two game characters fucking, we play them for the violence and not for the sex.

Because if we're going to make mature games we don't need sex, mature films manage.
Exactly. Children exposed to sex at early ages get really messed up. That's why child molestation is a problem (It doesn't matter if it's consensual even if a child knew what they were agreeing to, it'll screw them up anyway).

And finally, violence can be abstract. I've rarely seen realistic violence that caused more violence in games. Sex, on the other hand is sex. Ask any guy.

It is kinda ridiculous, but I'm not in favour of leaving sex and nudity uncensored. I don't think gaming is a mature enough medium to handle things like sex the right way. It'd just come off as crass.

OT:

Sort of like what Xzi said, America is the country were dismemberment and decapitation are fine, but breasts are unacceptable.

I'm not a big fan of sex in games. I don't have ANYTHING against sex or nudity in films and real life, but have you noticed how games with sex and nudity get higher ratings than those without? I'm pretty sure Heavy Rain and Mass Effect are good games (I KNOW God of War is a good game) but there's this nagging feeling that some people only like them because of the nudity and sex. I don't like that. I judge a game on story, gameplay, and replay value. If there's sex in it, I don't care, it's not a plus or a minus for the game. I'm not homosexual or anything, but I just don't think sex really improves a game.
Violence, however, is different. You can't preform violence in real life without penalty. If you blew up some guys head in real life, prison for life. If you explode a guys head in a video game, cool! +50 points! Video games allow us to do things we can't do in real life, like fly around, kill demons, shoot aliens, chainsaw zombies, bomb terrorists, and save the world. Sex is something to do with a real person to show you love them, not a virtual A.I for your own pleasure.

Here. Your not asking the right question.

What need is there for sex in a video game?

How would sex and nudity improve any game?

Would halo be better if cortana bent over once in a while to recieve a pounding from Master Cheif?

Walk Starcraft 2 be better is Kerrigan was having an insect orgy in a cutscene?

How can sex make a game better?
In the exact same ways it can make a novel or a movie better.

There really isn't much difference.

If it's for the children, then maybe the media would rather have kids be serial killers than serial rapists. To be fair, serial killers are normally geniuses. Or narcissists. Or both.

I guess that means that violence causes intelligence.

It's like that in all Western Media. *Note* I'm going to refer to Western Media for the rest of this post as that's what I'm exposed to the most. I'm not going to comment on Eastern Media because I simply don't know what goes down over there.

In everything it seems that violence is fine, and only the really gorey stuff is considered really obscene. Fight scenes of people punching each other are fine in almost every form of media aimed at those of around 10 years old and up. But any sort of sexual scene, even in something aimed at older audiences like Die Hard (implied sex), or Watchmen (actual boot knocking) it's still gets a sort of "ZOMFG SOME SEX MUST CENSOR!" reaction. Which is wierd, as people in general are infinately more likely to be involved in a sexual situation then they are a deadly knife fight or whatever.

Though maybe for that reason, it isn't shown as much in the media as violence, as stuff like TV and Film are the realms of escapist fantasy. Therefore they are more likely to show relatively abnormal actions, like gun fights or vicous torture. It's something most people wouldn't want to experience in the real world whereas sex is something people like in real life, so the former gets more attention from writers, directors, artists etc.

And it's not like all violence should be gone from the media, or that every work should have sex scenes in it. I think that a more even balance should be present, and that people shouldn't be so concerned with nudity or sexual references as forces that "corrupt children" (in stuff that's PG-13/12A and up, of course).

It's just a really wierd area, and until people get over themselves it's going to stay more or less the same.

Does anyone remember indigo prophecy? Gawd controlling that sex scene was weird.. and hot.
the Hot Coffee mod was better

from what I understand there were two scenes and one had a very big hint on Necrophilia, now that makes me wonder which one you enjoyed....

there are some dedicated porn games out there RapeLay being one of them however it's not really focused on in the mainstream area because..well....
1. they would mostly likely to get bad rep
2.the shame from the development team just might kill them
3.they dont want to take their chances on (organisational censorship, BBFC ERSB and so forth)

Agreed, if the God of War series has taught us one thing it's that the inclusion of sexuality in no way makes a game more mature, and can in fact have the opposite effect.

If anyone wants to scream Mass Effect at me then they can fuck right off. Yes, the game included sexuality, and is considered "mature" (about as mature as a game that lets you lez out on an alien chick can be). However, it's maturity came with the execution. And even then, considering that the sex scenes were something you unlocked with the right dialogue choices, making you have to "unlock" your love interest's pants puts the actual maturity of the implentation in question, to me anyway.

I would also like to point out that love hasn't been shied away from in games. There are plenty of romance plots/subplots, I shouldn't have to list any examples because they are fucking everywhere. Sex has been, but we all know that sex isn't the exclusive domain of love, therefore the OP's logic is, to me, questionable.

Because apparently to belief in society, being naked is worse for anyone below the age of 18 to see than being blown apart into small meaty chunks.

It makes no sense, but.. yeah.

Don't you understand? That's how america works.

We can show our kids blood, decapitations, guts, torture, and terribly gross things.

But show them one penis or vagina...

OH DEAR GOD WHAT IF THEY JERK IT TO THIS AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.

We are a dumb ass country.

It's a cultural thing, in the United States Sex is more taboo than violence. Look at some of the features they have in Japanese made games that are removed from their US releases.

This, there is NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOTHING less educative than learning a natural thing that actually made you go out of that dude's testicles and into the world.
