You cannot deny the staggering scale of inaccurate, sensationalist and outright bullcrap about games and gamers spewed forth by a media so out of touch with reality it thinks the Joker has red hair.

Besides, everyone knows games are the 21st century version of "the devil made me do it".

Do I really need to comment on this? I mean really? I'm starting to feel like a broken record here. Ok, here we go again. If this kid was indeed influenced into carrying out these killings by violent video games than he is the exception, not the rule. Most people who play violent video games do it so that they DON'T go on murderous rampages. Also more than likely, this kid had other serious psychological issues that he was dealing with as well that were probably much larger factors in this than the video games. Now could the news media PLEASE find some OTHER scapegoat to blame everything on?

Oh really? I can't deny it? Because all I've seen is a guest on CNN saying that videogames can make crazy people worse (Exact quote: "I'm not saying videogames make you a killer"), which is totally reasonable. Then there's this, which I don't think I comment accurately on until I've read more then a headline. Even if it does turn out to be anti-videogame bullshit, that'll bring the grand total up to 1. If you can show me this "staggering" amount of crap, I'll break out the 'ol rage without hesitation. But I just haven't seen it, plain and simple. Seems like the Escapist just has this overly defensive, knee-jerk reaction any time videogames are mentioned by any kind of news media, and nobody every really THINKS about it.

Retards will be retards. Remember the whole "HEAVY METAL WILL DESTROY YOUR CHILDREN" thing? Well, pop music is 20 times more dangerous in comparison, and I don't even care to protest against that.

We've seen this before. It'll blow over once "our" generation takes over fully, just like before.

"ah, so the batman films encouraged him?"

"no"

"well what did?"

"world of warcraft"

This is a perfect summation of media reaction to pretty much any violent massacre.

I totally expected this.

The worst part is how news reports keep using this excuse when it's obvious that their logic is completely flawed. If every person who plays video games, or at least the majority, were violent murderers, then maybe they'd have an argument. However, it's far more likely that people who are naturally aggressive would be drawn to video games. Besides, there were murders before games. I think that it's more reasonable to say that the violence is there before the games are, y'know?

I like how whenever violent video games comes up like this, it's always WoW. Hardly GTA, or Gears of War, or God of War or any other game/series that is actually rather violent.

If you don't have 2.48 to give to the whole thing, skip to 1.30 then tell me who does more to encourage shit like this. I'm sick of the things I love getting scapegoated by a medium that actively ignores professional advice in favour of commercial gain.
Does this mean I can twist this to blame the media now? A taste of their own medicine wouldn't hurt....................

....is what I would say if I really had to twist this around at all.
That would be nice, but sadly it would be stooping to their level. These moments are the product of a host of issues of which games, films, etc are a debatable part- mental health and access to weaponry are also parts, and arguably of greater direct importance.

My beef is that there are tangible things that mass media can do to mitigate these situations, that have been known about for a long time, that they blatantly ignore every single time. Perhaps the medium that like to appoint itself as chief inquisitor, counsellor and agony aunt should look at it's own behaviour before pointing the finger at the usual convenient targets?

As I have stated in a research paper I wrote (which I really should put on this computer for quick reference when these threads pop up) people who are violent nature look for violent entertainment to vent their frustrations.
Edit: I decided to put a link to the research paper for those who are interested (warning possible Bioshock spoilers inside) https://docs.google.com/document/d/1-gRLh_lcat11vMVyszl1UqlD8Gs2KW6BGWs7xx0b4zE/edit

I wish they would leave this alone, it wasn't games it was him!
clearly he is not right in the head.
a normal person dosent play a game and suddenly want to go kill people. not even over a period of time would that happen to a mentally sound person.
besides not all games are violent.
Imagine if they found in his games collection only racing and sports games.

Newspapers are more harmful than games. They just twist everything and only report the negatives.
and if they can't find anything they will dig something up (phone hacking) all in the name of selling a few extra newspapers

I donno what newspapers you subscribe to, but that thing looks like one of those stupid tabloid papers crazy people buy at safeway...
Anyway, did anyone really expect a different response from the media when this happened?
Especially from a paper this dubious looking?
This kind of knee jerk reaction is nothing new.

Also, I like how they say the killer "may" have appeared on a sex website with red hair like the Joker.

-Wasn't the Joker's hair green?
-"'May' have appeared on a sex website?" Did he or didn't he? Do you know, news people?
-What does a "kinky sex website" have to do with batman OR the killings?

And finally

-"Sometimes when he was supposed to be reading a paper or something like that, I would see him playing online role-playing games like World Of Warcraft and League of Legends"

.....Was reading a paper his job or something?

I don't know if you're English or not, but if you are't, then just read any article ever by The Mail or The Express. It's always videogames or immigrants that are to blame. If you are, how could you have missed this?

Edit: Here's a good example, http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2132002/Anders-Behring-Breivik-trial-Norway-killer-wanted-behead-prime-minister-live-online.html

4 out of the 6 points are about him playing videogames. (and also bullshit, CoD 16 hours a day, AND WoW, for a year? when did he shop? eat? sleep?

Another article. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2066803/Violent-video-games-DO-make-people-aggressive.html

Favours the study which took place over a couple of weeks with 22 people over the study over 3 years with 165 people. It also doesn't mention in the study that it makes people more agressive, just different.

Two more great ones, don't even need explaining: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2137757/Are-creating-generation-murderers-Shoot-em-ups-train-gamers-shoot-real-guns-accurately--hit-victims-head.html

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2039841/How-video-games-blur-real-life-boundaries-prompt-thoughts-violent-solutions-players-problems.html

Another one: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2176605/Teenager-killed-father-attacked-mother-taking-drugs-playing-violent-video-games.html

Videogames are mentioned twice in the article, one of those, in the headline.

I haven't even looked for articles from the express yet, which is a worse paper for it.

Well, your TV media is worse, but we have really scummy papers who are owned by the same guy who runs Fox News. Also, check my post, I've edited in some fun things the mail has said. It's not even half of what you can find though.

TBH, I read the title and thought "wtf has fox news done now >.<"

Our tabloids wouldn't get away with half the crap fox do. A lot of them are finding that out the hard way.... and by hard i mean the gentleman who has decided to make them his lover in prison.

The day we as a gaming community stop foaming at the mouth every time some sexually repressed bag of hate writes horrible things about gaming, is the day we all reach Nirvana together.

Switzerland man. Switzerland. Best examples of why said guns would be legal. Then again, I suppose it makes more sense there than in America
