Stupid woman...shouldn't help rapists.
Or in this case, innocent men who spent a decade in prison after being accused of rape. Sure, her reasons for believing they were innocent are retarded, and this is all indicative of a deeply flawed legal system, but I think we can all agree that the end result was a positive one..
How are you so sure he is innocent? (Guys still have hands, fingers, tongues, and objects you know) /:
Well, I'm basing my assumption on the fact that, after the case was reopened and re-investigated, all three men were released from jail. I'm hoping that the Vietnamese government wouldn't release these guys if there was still any doubt about their innocence, red dots or not.
You know what? I am too tired to go on about "Just because they were released from jail doesn't mean there innocent and shit". I am not going to sleep though! Must beat my last record...

As an acupuncturist in training myself, this is bull. She's been mislead, it doesn't exist not behind the ear at least. Things like this should be left to the law or in some cases justice.

When the justice fails, accupuncturism, right or wrong, is there to give it a push in the right direction!

It works in Thailand, at least.

Clearly 'released' does not equal 'innocent', just as 'incarcerated' does not equal 'guilty'. However, they weren't released merely because of this woman's crazy theories. That, and apparently her willingness to self-harm, were the catalysts that caused investigators to re-examine the case. Upon doing so they discovered that the police had (among other things) quietly hidden witness testimony which made the accused men seem innocent. Working on the evidence available to us, it is likely that the case was fully re-examined in the light of the previously witheld evidence, and the men were deemed to be innocent of the crime and therefore released.

I don't think it's likely that A) the investigators didn't find sufficient evidence of the men's innocence but decided to release them anyway, because "hey, why the hell not?" and B) that these men were released just because some nutbar acupuncturist decided (with no documented medical evidence other than her own theory) that they were innocent, and the justice system decided to play along.

Read the article here; [link]http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/38051788/ns/world_news/[/link]

Traditional medicine practitioner Pham Thi Hong started lobbying for the men's release, pleading their case all the way to the president, because she believes all three men are virgins and therefore could not be guilty of rape.

"They all had small red spots on the back of their ears," said Hong, 54. "The spots should have disappeared if they had had sex. My many years of experience told me that these men did not have sex before."

Her claims are unusual even for a country where acupuncture and traditional medicine are still common remedies, but Hong's determination to have the case reopened - even threatening to light herself on fire - led to prosecutors re-examining the case. The convictions eventually were suspended due to flaws by initial investigators.
All I can think is "Goddammit woman, stop stealing protest ideas from Buddhist monks in the Vietnam War." The title's a little misleading, they haven't been free yet, and I severely doubt they will, unless these claims are backed by, I don't know, ACTUAL EVIDENCE.

Was there any precedent to this theory? I'll admit, 3 different men sharing a unique trait is somewhat unusual, but not impossible. If she's correct, shouldn't all male virgins have this dot?

Dude, did you read the article? They were released back in January. There was indeed ACTUAL EVIDENCE, in the form of witness statements, which were ignored by the police at the time of the original trial. This nutty woman's theory only served as the catalyst to have the case re-examined.

That's her point, and the part I have the most difficulty accepting. OK, the inquiry found them innocent of the rape they were in jail for, but to expect three adult males to all be virgins is a little far-fetched. Were they all supposed to be saving themselves for marriage or something?

for all intents and purposes it's impossible to tell if a man's been in a vagina. I guess you could smell his unit within the time it takes for him to do the deed and make it to a shower... but that's about it.

Pseudoscience for the win!

This is the frankly insane story of a Vietnamese acupuncturist who believes that a man who is yet to have sex (heterosexual, that is - gay sex and masturbation apparently don't count)

Perhaps vaginas are magical?
Well we all knew that for the power they hold over us....

OT: I can't believe this bullshit, how could the prosecutors even think about listening to her?

Yeah, the 'more below' notice just blends into the adverts. Putting ads in the middle of an article = silly!

Perhaps it was those magic words, "I'll set myself on fire". Usually pretty good for grabbing attention, even if it is just a crowd who want to watch the spectacle. Anyway, the prosecutors didn't listen to her. The President did, and he told the prosecutors to re-open the case. Personally, if I were Vietnamese, I'd find that even more scary!

Wait, before you die, where was your stash- I want to do the same.

Seriously, what is wrong with people? Maybe 1000 years ago when we didn't have anything that wasn't ludicrous folk medicine this sort of belief would be rational. However, in this era it is just crazy to belief in this sort of thing. My week old nephew does not have a red dot behind his ear, and I'm damn certain that he is a virgin.

What the fuck is wrong with that woman? They shouldn't listen to her, they should stick her behind bars too.
I imagine the only reason they re-opened the case was because she threatened to harm herself. Shows how much even she believed her own argument...
It seems to me that if she set herself on fire, the problem would solve itself, but whatever. We can release the convicted rapists, too.

Because they re-opened it for the wrong reasons. It was pure luck that they turned out to be innocent.

I don't know, but I think it costs alot of money to re-open a closed case.

And if they had been guilty, which was the most probable outcome, they would have either wasted lots of money on comfirming something they already knew.

Or wasted lots of money to get three men guilty of gang rape back out on the streets before they had served their time.
So basically you're saying that it's better for three guys to rot in jail for 20 years (and I do mean rot... have you SEEN these Asian jails??) than to spend a bit of money?

I sure as hell don't!
