People tend to dismiss it nowadays, but when it first came out with the original 'Unreal', the Unreal Engine was absolutely mind-boggling. I only ever got into the series with the original Unreal Tournament released one year later, but even then the sorts of vistas and visuals that engine was pushing was unparalleled for its time.

That was mind-blowing for its time, as were many of the levels. Absolutely amazing!
have to agree with you there. And for its time Halo: CE kept blowing my mind o_O

I on the other hand think that all unreal engines have aged remarkably well.. only the animations haven't.

Well, the very opposite could be Cave Story. It was released in the mid-2000s I believe with old-school graphics.

Two words...

Robinson's Requiem

Remember. This was a game that was on the Atari and Amiga. This game was seriously the shit! (keep in mind, that this video is from the 3DO port, so the cutscene video is better, but the gameplay part is exactly the same as the copy I had on the Atari)

For me it must be Half-Life 2. It's like the point where graphics just stopped being that important in my enjoyment of the game. Look at Half-Life 1 and Half-Life 2. The differences are immense, even if HL1 was an achievement back then. Yet Half-Life 2 isn't all the different from some recent games. Technically it is way behind (textures, polygons, lighting, you name it), but it doesn't feel bad. I can still play it without noticing the graphics, like I would with HL1.

It's the faces. The faces make all the difference.

I don't get how people can get a hard on for pre-rendered graphics. And since the FF games are entirely made up of pre-rendered movies and shit, i don't see how that's even mentionable here.

Anyway, i remember being blown away by a game i played on a PC belonging to a friend when i was still using a Playstation 1. I believe the game was the first UT game...

I have to go with Everquest. I was amazed that an online game could look that good and run that well back then.

Far Cry. Oh so much Far Cry. I still remember how me and my friends dropped our jaws in awe the first moment we saw those graphics.

Just LOOK at it. If a modern game would look like that, I'm sure no one would ***** about bad graphics, even even if it's 7 years old already.

Because pre-rendered environments can look nearly photorealistic. See resident evil remake on gamecube.

Freespace 2, a game that came out in 1999 and still has modders.

Anyways, back in the day I played a little demo for this game and I couldn't take my eyes off of it.. I remember thinking how realistic the game looked... Shows how far games have come in about 12 years.. I still want a sequel to one of the many awesome space combat games... Freelancer 2 comes to mind, haha.
