I didn't know that there wasn't magic through the first half of Rouge Galaxy, and as such, thought that eventually, I would get a healing spell. You should have seen how many Game Overs I got (not really, thanks to their "switch-out party members" system).

I only found out about the Pipboy light, because a hint came up about it on one of the loading screens, did not know about the water, and I still haven't figured out how to put your weapon away without unequipping it either? :D
EDIT: Three quotes later, and now I know. Thanks! :)

Anyway, best one of these for me, would have to be the first time I played through FF8. I got as far as somewhere on disc 2, and then gave up on it because I was getting my ass kicked too much. Returned to it later, this time actually bothering with skimming through all those tutorials at the beginning. Suddenly it came to me, just what that GF-thingy was, and how to use them. Well, I'll be damned! Had NOT noticed that. -_-

The combat in Prince of Persia (2008)... I could never get the hang of blocking, which made the already frustrating combat mechanics nearly unbearable... then, about halfway through my 4th time beating the game I figured out you had to hold down the shoulder button to block rather than tapping it at exactly the right moment, and in an instant I realized what Yahtzee had been on about in his review.
You will never see a facepalm as epic as mine on that day. Probably my most embarassing moment in my 16 years of being a gamer.

I played the deku tree in ocarina of time for about 6 months before realising how to set fire to a web on the ground. Well, I say figured out. I got a friend to do it for me.

then I got to the water temple in a couple of months (it took me a long time as I was about 8) and had to brutally murder myself because of it.
Why are there so few people who actually managed to do this?

I was playing with a walkthrough (the book kind) and I forgot it when I came over to play so I beat the temple no problem without it. It took like, an hour, but it wasn't hard.

In Second Sight, I took forever to figure out that tranquilizers to the HEAD is an instant takedown.

I cried. I really did.

Same game, console, didn't realize that either. Also, my friend showed me how to hotkey weapons. Didn't figure those ones out forever.

Have you ever noticed something just hidden or never talked about ingame, that was just so painfully obvious, that you just feel stupid afterwards, either it be you finally finding it out, or someone telling you, has this ever happened to you, and with what?...

I just realized yesterday, that my Pipboy in Fallout 3 had a built in flashlight in it that was toggled by holding down the Tab button longer.(have been playing Fallout 3 for the past 3-4 months now)
the pip boy has a flashlight... shit. You're good buddy.

OT:

Yes, this happens to me all the time, but I can't think of specifics atm

I get a lot of that feeling when playing Demon's Souls, half the stuff I find out I didn't even know I could do in the game itself like "The fuck, I killed that mother fucking thing?!?! How the hell did I do that!" and using the emotes.

You can jump off the ledge at the top of the room and break it that way too (unless you're talking about one after that)

I played through Prince of Persia (XBox variant) once and one year later I play it again and realise you can drink water continuously if you hold down the button.

I would've made it through tons of fights so much easier with that knowledge.

Didn't know I had a flashlight or the power to run in Half-Life 2 until I was almost completely done with the game, meaning my method of getting around dark corridors was to choose random directions until I got somewhere different, although sometimes I ended up in the same place instead.

I also didn't know how to climb ladders for about a third of the game, because the second puzzle, where you're supposed to climb up and down ladders to get over a chainlink fence, I solved by stacking boxes, which is what I thought it was trying to get me to do!
