Wait, this guy/girl is the hero? He/she's a dick!

I started playing Just Cause 2 yesterday, and while the game was fun I was stunned over what a total dick Rico Rodriguez was. I mean, Rico saves this Swedish guy from a casino, who does nothing but try to help him, but Rico still thinks it's appropriate to act like an ass and threaten to kill him all the time.

So, now I ask you, my fellow Escapists, what protagonists/heroes have you encountered in games that you immediately thought was acting like an ass?

Dead rising off the record Frank vs Evan


I just think frank comes of as a bit of a dick towards someone who just wants to avenge his brother´s death (frank killed him but had no choice. Actually he didnt even killed him, it was sort of an indirect kill) Then again, Evan IS a psychopath so yeah he was not very right to begin with, but still... It just seemed kind of an unnecesary and avoidable fight, maybe.



I am kind streching it thougt, I honestly dont have a more proper example so I just put this instead.

I've written essays on him before but i'll just say that his constant dickery and lack of character development directly contradicts the entire theme of the game.

I have several other reasons but that's the main one.

Well I found male Sheppard to always act like a prick, but that's ok because there is the option to go ultra prick.

But that is nothing compared to Kratos, that guy achieved Super Saiyan 3 prick levels.

I don't even play Final Fantasy, but spoiling games regardless of how long they've been out is still a dick thing to do. I've had numerous games spoiled for me on this site because people weren't considerate enough to put in spoiler tags (which isn't even hard to do) because they felt the game had been out a certain amount of time, or was widely known, or some other bullshit excuse.

Wow. As I was typing that, I realized that pretty much every hero in a recent Final Fantasy game (VII on) is a colossal toolbox. The exception being XII, where the hero is a little girl.

Kratos. I literally can't think of a dick move greater than destroying the entire world for the sake of nothing but your own personal revenge, especially when the cause of everything that has ever gone wrong in your life has been that you just can't seem to stop killing people.

Pretty much this. The only gripe I actually have with the God of War Series is when the sequel number increases, the storyline is sacrificed for more epic gameplay and setpieces. So I consider Kratos to be awesome and most likeable in GoW 1. While I hate him so much in GoW 3 but still love the gameplay and setpieces.

Squall. OK, he gets better and starts to change and show promise, but damn, what an arse! "Sorry, what's that? You're trying to include me, communicate with me, and generally help me? Get lost!" before wallowing in speeches about how he's "So alone, but no one could ever understand."

... And yeah, I get that this is the basis for his character development, but still.

Gerald in The Witcher. The guy's an unlikeable asshat, who every woman in the world inexplicably wants to sleep with, and even after 30 hours he still couldn't convinve me to give a damn about whatever stupid Witcher thing got stolen at the start of the game that he wanted back.

 

[Soviet Heavy]

The Courier. He destroyed the Divide either by accident or intentionally, dooming a thriving community to a nuclear hellscape. S/he can then become a mass murdering psychopath who kills the entire Mojave, either by directing a poison gas cloud against it, or by nuking all the entrances, crippling trade and simultaneously choking out all life in California and Colorado.
